KUH LEDESMA :
A Career De Force
IN DESCRIBING THE CAREER OF KUH LEDESMA, three words instantly
come to mind. ENDURING, for she has proven through more than 30 years in
show business, that a female singer can grow from ingenue to a woman and still
maintain an exciting image, INNOVATIVE, for her career has been marked by a
constant series of growths and changes. RARE, and that description needs no
explanation to those who have followed through 30 years of performances, the
unique quality of Kuh’s most valuable instrument, a voice that is hers and hers
alone, complemented with incredible passion, intelligence, beauty and
individuality. All combined, these qualities have made hers a “career de force.”
By any reasonable standard, Kuh Ledesma has established herself as the
Philippines’ most important female pop act today, regularly hailed by reviewers as
the country’s undisputed “pop diva”. She has triumphantly conquered recording,
the concert stage, television, advertising, and musical production, is a byword
among the elite and the mass public alike, and with her customary brilliance and
sophistication, sets styles in whatever area of entertainment she chooses.
After celebrating over 30 victorious years, having more than a thousand concerts
to her name (a record yet to beat) and being the recipient of numerous awards in
the Philippine performing scene, Kuh Ledesma has set even greater goals for
herself in the new millennium, With 19 albums to her name in the local
recording industry, she has embarked on an international career that hopes to
establish her as a major world artist.
Kuh’s pursuit of excellence continues by working actively to bring herself to the
attention a larger public -- the world audience. In March 1989, Kuh Ledesma
was chosen as the first Philippine singer to be the recipient of the Salem Music
Awards. Top singers from Asian countries were showcased in a concert at the
prestigious Royal Albert Hall in London. Then, in March 1990, she appeared as
as guest performer in a Gilbert Becaud TV produced and aired in Paris where she
sung BULAKLAK ( The Rose ) in three languages , Filipino, English and
French. In July of the same year. Ledesma joined the mammoth of international
television special “ Earth 90 “ as the Philippine representative. Staged in Tokyo,
Japan, “ Earth 90 “ was a celebration of environmental themes and it featured
such stars as OLIVIA NEWTON -JOHN and JOHN DENVER in a broadcast
that was aired simultaneously in around 80 countries. Ledesma also joined the
NHK- KAYO parade held in Tokyo that same period. In 1991, Kuh Ledesma
obliged and accepted the invitation be a member of the panel of judges in to the
Miss Universe Beauty Pageant held in Las Vegas, U. S.A.
Prior to these years, Kuh in 1984 was chosen by the acclaimed international
director PETER WEIR to play the role of enigmatic Tiger Lily in his film “ The
Year of Living Dangerously “, which starred MEL GIBSON and SIGOURNEY
WEAVER. Although Kuh’s singing commitments have prevented her from
acting more in motion picture. Kuh’s allure has also attracted the advertising
world. From 1984-1990 , she has been a model for Lux soap in a series of
memorable print ads and television commercials. Lux officials were so impressed
by Kuh’s work she was also signed in as Lux model for Singapore from 1988- 1989
and Indonesia in 1992.
Conscious efforts were directed to put Kuh Ledesma on a back to back singing
engagement with foreign artists. This was in September 1993 where she had a 4night concert series with NOEL POINTER, a world famous jazz violinist and
with whom Kuh released an album “ The Voice, The Violin “. February of 1994
was another much talked about back to back concert with the legendary balladeer
JACK JONES in “ Two of Hearts “. 1995’s Valentine season, she performed
with no less than world renowned KENNY RANKIN . Kuh started the new
millennium with the most successful valentine show with the world renowned
THE PLATTERS. And in 2002, Kuh did a Valentine show with the legendary
MICHEL LEGRAND.
What proved to be Kuh’s greatest accomplishment to date was the release of her
international debut album “PRECIOUS “., a collaboration of the best American
& Filipino songwriters , arrangers and musicians . The album received rave
reviews and made its way to the jazz charts. Kuh also had a life size billboard in
Sunset boulevard, along with the billboards of Streisand, Carey and Dion.
But perhaps the biggest and most significant contribution of Kuh Ledesma in the
music industry is the MUSIC MUSEUM , established in 1988, a theater restaurant in Greenhills, is now the country’s foremost venue for quality
concerts. Kuh Ledesma produced or line produced shows often for new or up
coming artists.
Kuh Ledesma continues to dominate every field she is into, the concert scene,
recording and even television , she had a regular once a month special called
AKUHSTIC CAFE AKUHSTIC CAFE is a musical travelogue of sort for it takes
place away from the synthetic environ of the TV studio and dives deep into the
club and lounge of the city where the pulse of the metro is dictated and always
recreated, and concert happens in from a very live audience to completely capture
this frenetic heat energetic ambience of the urban night life. AKUHSTIC CAFE
was a grand finalist in the ASIAN television awards in Singapore for best
musical program.
In 1997, Kuh continued her winning streak as she staged the highly successful
three night valentine series at the Music Museum. In April , Kuh was the
featured artist of the Muling Aawit ang Pasig..a benefit concert of the First
Lady Ming Ramos for the restoration of the Pasig River. Kuh in Muling
Aawit ang Pasig, shared the same vision, passion and determination in saving the
Pasig River. Kuh Ledesma is the perfect performer, the unique voice who can
show what Pasig can be.
1998 being the centennial year of the Philippine Independence, Kuh staged the
very successful two night centennial inspired valentine concert at the Fort
Santiago, and the year became even better as she was commissioned by the
National Centennial Commission to stage the three - night centennial concert of
the year “LAHI ... KAMI ANG PILIPINO “ held at the Expo center in Clark
center.
And following the tradition of her POWER OF TWO series , she staged
another 10 night series at the Music Museum , this time with Jaya.
In 1999 , the first in Kuh’s line up of shows was the Power of Two valentine
series with Pops Fernandez followed by a US tour with Regine Velasquez. Kuh
also released her 17th album AKUHSTIC.
The latter part of 1999, Kuh opened another venue in the heart of Manila aptly
called THE REPUBLIC OF MALATE . The Republic of Malate is a three in
one complex along Mabini St. , it has a funky restaurant and bar that serves the
best Chinese cuisine with a modern twist called The Good earth tea room, a
watering hole , game room and tobacco area called Survival Cafe and The
Republic , a warehouse converted into a dance club / theater with state of the art
lights and sound system . The venue is ideal for intimate concerts and long
running series. It was the most popular entertainment spot in the metropolis
until it burned down in November 2001. Late 2003 the Republic of Malate now a
five level structure , opened the Republic theater, now bigger and more spacious.
The theater is an ideal venue for intimate concerts, long running series, plays,
product lauchings, private parties and corporate events.
In the recording scene, Kuh released the first of its kind album, DUET WITH
ME-- a double disc album featuring Kuh Ledesma doing duets with herself. The
album includes a disc wherein harmony parts are separated from the melody parts,
Anybody can therefore learn either the harmony parts or the melody parts of the
songs and duet with Kuh. This revolutionized karaoke singing. Duet with me is
Kuh’s eighteenth album. She then released a commemorative album of her concert
with Zsazsa Padilla entitled DIVA 2 DIVA. Presently, Kuh released her newest
album " K" a bold spin to the music of the Filipino masters, a sound that you can
call neo- Filipino. The album speaks about the beauty of the Filipino music and
the nobililty of the Pinoy character.
After this K album, Kuh will be working on her first inspirational album
“Walking on Water and a dance/chill remix of all her hits “ Klub Icon “.
2008 marked the biggest concert conceptualized by Kuh. She put together in one
stage all together the biggest and the finest singer the country has ever had – Kuh
Ledesma, Zsazsa Padilla, Pops Fernandez and Regine Velasquez aptly entitled “
DIVAS4DIVAS “ – the most successful collaboration embarked also on a US tour
With her combination of savvy, grit, determination and cool daring style, Kuh
Ledesma adds more force to an already forceful career- a world -class of a career.
While audiences have adored her as the DIVA , Kuh creates an electrifying
persona who can boldly and bravely make a statement. Her sense of nationalism
reflects even in her concerts and album productions . Her willingness to help and
her concern and love for her country has led Kuh Ledesma to be active in groups
such as Artista para sa Pagbabago, an organization comprising of artists ,
environmentalists and businessmen, whose aim is to correct the Filipinos’’
consciousness corrupted by lack of moral values . In 2001, she became the
president of the Restaurant owners association of Malate, whose aim is to make
Malate a prime tourist destination. She is a staunch supporter of Gawad Kalinga,
a non goverment organization which provides not only housing projects for the
poor but also build communities with strong moral and spriritual foundation.
She stages major productions for the benefit of various civic and religious
organizations. She is currently one of the board of directors of the organization of
the deaf, whose objective is to empower the hearing impaired individuals.
Juggling concerts, television appearances, television tapings and album
recordings, Kuh opens another venue off Tagaytay called “Hacienda Isabella “.
Named after her only daughter, the Hacienda is a sprawling property with an
expansive garden & lawn and adjacent cottages. The place boasts several farm
houses complete with fireplaces to serve as cozy overnight retreats for couples or
families who want to escape the city. It has a huge garden for children to frolic in,
game pavillions, outside cinema , a library and a restaurant that serves comfort
food, salads and pastas. The venue is ideal for weddings, retreats, seminars, team
buildings, parties and outdoor concerts.
Aside from doing concerts and special shows, Kuh is busy travelling , doing
values formation, inspirational and motivational talks here and abroad.
