III. GRADE RANGE: Primary, Upper Elementary, Middle, Junior High,
High, and Early College.
IV. GENERAL EDUCATION GOAL: The goal for this lesson is to help
students better interpret and understand the relationship of languages and
religions in Europe.
V. SPECIFIC OBSERVABLE BEHAVIOR OBJECTIVES:
Upon successful completion of this lesson, students will:
1. Understand distribution of European languages.
2. Understand distribution of European religions.
3. Organize geographic information
4. Analyze geographic information (see assessment)
VI. GEOGRAPHIC STANDARDS ENGAGED: 1, 4, 5, 6, 10, 12, and 18.
VII. TIME REQUIRED FOR COMPLETION: One 55-minute period.
VIII. MATERIALS USED: Current almanac, atlas, and student handout.
IX. PROCEDURE:
Part # 1: Use Student hand-out as a guide.
Research European languages and religions
This may be done a cooperative activity or an individual activity. To save
time, the teacher may give out the information.
Part # 2: Check information for accuracy by either students checking or
by instructor checking.
Part # 3: Students map languages and religion
Students should arrange data by language. Students should arrange data
by religion. Create separate cloropleth maps for language and religion.
Note: This is an excellent activity to teach database building.
Part # 4: Compare student maps for accuracy.
X. ASSESSMENT: Students will demonstrate understanding of European
languages and religions and be able to map them correctly.
XI. ENHANCEMENTS: Have students research population and ethnic
groups of European countries and map the data for comparison.
