Keynote
Dr Alex James, University of Canterbury
Alex is a bubbly presenter and full of enthusiasm for learning and thinking
mathematics. She spoke at the Envisioning the Future Conference held in Auckland
earlier this year. If we do not promote mathematics we will end up exactly where we
are headed. Perhaps it is time to make our mathematics classes enjoyment driven.

Statistics: x1
A1 “Developing Informal Inference at Level 6”, Jason Elwood OTC
Jason is keen to help teachers improve knowledge of the new understandings called
informal reasoning. There are some proposed “rules” which he would like to discuss. These
include the “half three-quarter idea” and the “third and fifth” idea. I am loath to call these
rules as they will become “de facto-correct” and done without thinking (Hogan’s Comment).
There is a load of supporting info at Census at Schools and Auckstats wiki.
B1 “ Statistical Thinking and Resources”, Anna Brookie, HOD Maths, PNGHS
Anna is a very talented teacher and presenter and one who experiments with resources. She
has been trialing some rich statistical tasks at Year 9 and is sharing these at this workshop.
Anna is a co-author of the new Cambridge text on display in the foyer.
C1 “Trying to develop student’s statistical literacy” Phil Doyle, Team Solutions
This workshop will look at how we might attempt to develop a classroom where students
learn to make and support statistical arguments based on data. We will look at what
learning activities might be used to develop students’ statistical critical thinking skills and
how ICT can help students develop a good conceptual understanding of concepts related to
statistical literacy. Phil is a fun presenter loaded with practical knowledge.
D1 “Smart Board Tech in the Classroom”, T Webster, R Astwood, Katikati.
I can not obtain a SmartBoard to run this seasion so if anyone can help please and urgent contact me.
Otherwise I will run my planned MAV workshop on Visually Multiplying Fractions.
A2 “Eluminate – Communication, Toni Twiss, School Support Services, UOW
Toni is our School Support Services IT expert and expert she is. I asked her to explain and
demonstrate the Eluminate software which allows teachers to co-operate on a task/document with
online sound and visuals. It needs preparatory setting up but is easy to use.

C2 “Electronic Portfolios”, Toni Twiss, SSS, UOW
In 2011 teachers are asked to organize portfolios for the collection of data for the new Numeracy
Unit Standards. An obvious answer is a folder but there are other ways including a student driven on
line record. Toni has some good ideas.
D2 “Technology in the Classroom”, David Barton, Pearson Books
David will tell me what he plans soon but he will be talking about Casio Calculator use in
learning to think mathematically. David is the keen book writer of Alpha, Beta series and
has been at previous conferences.
A3 “Learning in 2011”, Anna Brockie HOD PNGHS.
Anna is collecting a number of resources and learning opportunities to share. What is learning
mathematics now? What is learning to think mathematically?
B3 “Using a textbook for Learning”. Charlotte Wilkinson, Wilky Way Resources
Charlotte has created a comprehensive series of texts targeted at Stage 4 to 8 numeracy levels or
curriculum levels 1 to 5. Her books are easy to read, have extensive teacher guides and best of all,
pictures of teenagers! I think these would be a wise choice for lower ability classes developing
number strategy. She will focus on multiplication and teaching students how to learn their
multiplication facts and at the same time cater for those who do know them by focusing on the big
ideas in multiplication. I will be demonstrating the problem solving teaching approach to promote
student thinking rather than just student doing.
C3 “Mathletics in the Secondary Classroom”, Yvonne Blanch, Mathletics
Yvonne is keen to demonstrate how to use the Mathletics website in the classroom situation.
Teachers can monitor students and change the options they have. Yvonne will have a trade display.
D3 “Jeopardy – The Maths Game”, Wikarena Wihapi and Milky, Wairoa College.
This is another popular game that Wi has transferred to the mathematics world. How he found the
energy and motivation is deep within his dedication to helping his students learn and use
mathematics. Again, bring the data sticks and take a copy. See also A5.
A4 “Numeracy Activities in the Classroom”, Sandra Cathcart, Team Solutions
The new curriculum emphasizes the need for students to develop thinking skills. I will present a rich
task that can be used to develop mathematical thinking. Also introduced are a number of practical
activities across the strands that can be used to introduce a new topic or revise an old one. You will
leave with new resources.
B4 “"Maths: when did it stop being fun (or did it ever start?)"”, Dr Alex James
Alex will continue her theme from the keynote and give reason to think mathematically. If you Google
“Alex James nz” you will quickly find her footprint on the internet.
C4 “ Solving problems Using Geogebra”, Shaun English, HOD Lakes HS
Shaun is an exciting and highly techno-savy mathematics teacher. “Do not give me a piece of paper!”
Geogebra is a very good learning platform. We can present open problems to students and allow the
learning to happen. He recently challenged me to find “the other” solution to a geometric situation
from CMA magazine problem. I was impressed.
D4 “Programming Using MOWAY”, Morgan Stirling, Sitech Systems
Programming the NZC curriculum? We used to have it. Where did it go? This system is a fun way to
develop logical thinking needed in this technological world. This workshop will be hands on.
Programme a little robot to do a task.

A5 ”Millionaire Game” Wikarena Wihapi and Milky, Wairoa College.
Wikarena and Milky will present the long hours of developing a version of Millionaire, complete with
music, but with a math twist. Learn the game, learn how to alter the questions, bring a data stick and
take a copy. Wi explains how he uses the game to keep the motivation levels high. See also D3.
D5 “Choosing Courses 2011”, David Barton, Pearson Books
Pathways for students. The NZC workshops the advisors ran talked about pathways. Hear the view
from the writer. This is a topic that is very important.
C5 “Assessment Design”, Lewis Hockings, TGHS
Writing an assessment is not everyone’s cup of tea but we should all be able to know what is
involved. This helps solve the moderation issues. The new standards are different and do allow for
more flexibility in assessment. Lewis has been developing assessments for a while now.
D5 “Proportional Thinking”, Alison Fagan, Massey University
A workshop to illustrate the use of materials to develop and consolidate proportional thinking. This
will include fractions, decimals, percentages, ratio and even algebra! Alison is a very experienced
presenter and advisor.

Angela does not want to be the “barbequed chicken” but is very happy to answer questions; help
describe the planned future; describe some initiatives with NZAMT; and talk about NCEA L2 perhaps.

These two sessions are together so that a long conversation can be entertained. This is the first of a
series of meetings on this topic. The website below explains the purpose and records what is
happening. Over 80 people met in Auckland earlier this year over concerns about the ages 16 to 20
mathematics pathways. We need to be very careful about mathematics and the future and thank
goodness we have a forum to discuss the issue in depth with all the right people.
