Section C
(25 marks)
Read the passage below and answer the questions that follow.
1 Many of us may not realize or admit that we have unhealthy and even dangerous eating
habits. Undesirable eating habits are eating fewer food that have limited nutritional value,
food that is over processed or that contains inordinate amounts of fat, salt, sugar, artificial
ingredients and chemical preservatives. Replace them with good eating habits such as eating
more real food. This is food that is not overly processed and is close to its natural state such
as fruits, vegetables, whole grains, plain dairy products and fish. Making such a change will
not require you to drive miles out of your way to search for organic product in obscured
health food stores. Real food is found in any grocery store and most restaurants.
2
Here are some guidelines on how to eat sensibly. Make a concerted effort to reduce
the amount of over processed and junk food you eat. Always consider the quality of food
that you eat. Start reading the labels of the food to avoid buying processed food that is more
artificial than real. When reading the ingredient list, check to see if sugar, fat or salt is among
the first three ingredients. If they are, the food has more of those ingredients than anything
else because ingredients are listed in descending order by weight. Now, look at the number
of fat grams. For every five grams of fat in a serving of food, you are eating the equivalent of
one teaspoon of fat. So, if one serving of a dish has twenty grams of fat, you are eating the
equivalent of four-and-a-half teaspoons of fat. Avoid eating at fast-food outlets because most
of their products are deep-fried or very high in fat, salt and sugar. If you do order fast-food
meals, do your homework by studying the nutritional guide available at most of these
restaurants and choosing the healthiest food on the menu.
3
When eating at restaurants, remember that size matters. You should not order meals
with words that indicate meals that are even larger than the standard ones; namely, combo,
jumbo, king-size and supreme. Instead, order the smallest burger on the menu. Super-sized
burgers with all the toppings such as cheese and special sauces often contain half the calories
and all the fat you should eat in a day. Avoid all-you-can-eat buffets for you are likely to
overeat to get your money’s worth. If the people you are with insist on buffet dining, opt for
fresh fruits, salads with low-fat dressings, and steamed fish. Resist the temptation to go for
seconds.
4
A healthy diet has these two keywords: moderation and balance. You can eat a
variety of food. Varying your diet provides a greater range of nutrients. Eating the same food
every day supplies your body with the same vitamins and minerals to the exclusion of others.
Watch the portions you eat. When it comes to food, you van have too much of a good thing.
Two servings of a low-fat food can contain as much or more fat as one percent of your total
daily calories. Consume lean meat such as skinless white-meat poultry, fish and low-fat
dairy products. Limit your intake of vegetable oils, butter, salad dressings and fried food.
5
Keep your cholesterol consumption low. Cholesterol is found only in food made
from animal products such as meat, dairy foodstuffs and egg yolks. Eating such food in
reasonable portions can help keep your cholesterol within healthy limits. Eat the right kind
of carbohydrates. Eighty percent of your total carbohydrate intake should come from
complex carbohydrates such as fruits, vegetables, pasta, rice, barley, oatmeal and rice.
6
Choose lean sources of protein. The leanest sources include skinless chicken breast,
egg white, skim milk, low-fat cheese, beans, fish and bean curd. Add vegetables to almost
everything you eat. When you cook with fat, use the monounsaturated kind. Olive oil, peanut
oil, and corn oil are high in monounsaturated fat that helps lower blood cholesterol. Avoid
excess sugar. Besides contributing to tooth decay, sugar is a source of calories that can
contribute to weight gain.
7
Eating sensibly is not enough to ensure healthy life. Over the years, numerous studies

have shown that exercise can protect against diseases and early death. Research suggests that
as little as thirty minutes of daily workouts such as walking, cycling or swimming can make
a big difference to our health. Moderate exercise is good enough. Survival gains achieved by
going from sedentary to moderately active are greater than those achieved by going from
moderately active to very active. Walking two miles per day can prolong life. So with the
combination of healthy eating and regular exercise, we are likely to live a healthier and
longer life.
