when properly relieved.

What are the duties of a guard?
They must memorize, understand, and comply with the general orders for guards. In
addition, guards must understand and comply with special orders applying to their
particular posts, including the use of the countersign and parole word, if they are in
effect.
What is a parole word?
The parole (word) is used to check on the countersign when inspecting guards. Any
person in time of war who discloses the parole word or countersign to any person not
entitled to receive it, shall be punished by death or such other punishment as a
court-martial may direct (Article 101, Uniform Code of Military Justice).
What do special orders define?

What is supernumerary?
An extra member of the guard who is used when needed to replace a guard or to
perform special duties as prescribed by local directives.
