CARDIFF CENTRE FOR LIFELONG LEARNING Minutes of the Tutor Working Group Meeting Friday 26th November 2010 Present: Helga Eckart, Margaret Harper, Genevieve Kinnafick, Sue Morgan,Vikki Payne, Zbig Sobiesierski and Clive Wood (Chair) 1. Apologies for Absence: Apologies were received from Elaine Brennan, John Dyke, Tina Heard, Clare O’Connell and Helen Walker 2. Minutes and Matters Arising 2.1 The minutes of the last meeting were agreed as an accurate record. 2.2 Photocopier –Tutor’s agree that it is a better location but the room is being used as a dumping ground. ZS agreed that the room should have a dual purpose for the photocopier and equipment storage but the room needs to be kept a bit tidier. 2.3 Quiet Room - Tutors are very pleased with the new Quiet Room and gave their thanks. GK enquired whether computers are going to be put in the room. Tutors would need to decide this and whether there is a need for more computers. Tutors feel that the computers in the tutor room are very slow and whether they will be upgraded soon. Action - VP to speak to AK 3 Academic Matter 1. Student Handbook – There is guidance for essay writing but SM asked whether they could have a specific one for Creative Writing, ZS suggested speaking to Nick Jones to put something together for Creative Writing Students but not in the Student Handbook. 2. Undergraduate Year 2 – GK informed the group that some groups have been mixed disciplines, CARBS and ENGIN and the content isn’t the same, GK to speak to CC. Groups can be large and some tutors find this difficult, HE said that this is done to make the courses viable. 4 Non-Academic Matters 1. Tutors Room – There is never any stationery in the tutor’s room. Should tutor be given a supply at the start of term? Action - VP to speak to Sian 2. Toner – a sign has been put in the photocopier room to alert a member of staff when they use the last one 3. Clocks – GK informed the group that most of the clocks are set on different times. 4. Language Lab – Tutors having problems with some of the computers, headphones not working, Action -VP to speak to AK 5. Power point – it is intended to have power point in all classrooms (if the funding is available). Tutors would like to have a training session on this. The equipment doesn’t have the same set up in all rooms. E2.20 is the same as the Confucius rooms, E2.28 is the same as E2.30A, we need to try and keep the same set up in classrooms. Action - VP to speak to AK. Tutors would like to have some training on the equipment we already have. Action - VP to speak to HW/NJ 6. Lab Bookings- GK and MH think the new system is working well but some tutors have found it confusing as they aren’t sure which lab they are using, VP assured the group that DP always states which lab has been booked, there might be some confusion if DP doesn’t know how many students are in a group, as the lab downstairs only has 16 computers. 7. Saturday Openings – LL reported problems on Saturdays but we have hopefully resolved these issues by not having day schools starting before 10.00am, DP/VP to monitor the situation. 8. PUG – HE expressed that a tutor representative was still needed for the Premises User Group, CW volunteered. 5. Study Skills 6. The Centre has purchased a resource from Swansea University to support students using money from the Graham Review. It will be available on the Web to guidance to students on references, grammar etc. This should be available in the New Year. Learn Tutor Forum 90% of tutors said yes to the forum, 66% thought the best format would be Blackboard with a link from our Facebook page. Tutors would need to opt in rather than add all tutors. A draft version to be put in place. 7. AOB Learning and Teaching – Tutors Christmas Party - Tutors won’t be paid for it. HW to e-mail tutors for feedback whether they want one etc, still pending. Language Workshop - a follow up session will be held. Date of Next Meeting: 11th March 2011 at 2pm
