Possibly an intermediate step between those shown in the 1879 catalog and the 1883 catalog. The 1883 catalog puts emphasis on their fine adjustment mechanism that is improved over similar mechanisms to be both adjustable and serviceable. (Compare their sketch in their 83 catalog to sketch of mechanism in this unit. Could this be the first version of this mechanism?) Upright arm is brass and is painted (we assume paint was necessary because of staining etc when parallel blades soldered into position.) Microscope-signed Baker London 244 High Holbron (appears to be by Zeiss.) Lenses and objectives signed C. Zeiss, top of objective container shows Baker as agent. Box appears German. Box, microscope, and lock all have XII on them. Microscope signed Georges Oberhauser Place Dauphine 19 Paris s#1555, with excellent optics, wonderful test pattern particularly at higher magnification. Microscope-Bausch & Lomb s#8712 with box and extra lenses (note early Bausch & Lomb scopes had serial number stamped in bottom of case only) with cylinder diaphragm. Surveying or Nautical instrument-Henry Barrow c1838, maker of a Mariner’s compass and a gunner’s rule at the National Maritime Musuem. Robinson’s name on label as predecessor, “Robinson, Thomas Charles 1821-1832 at 38 Devonshire St London. See pgs 433 & 434 “The Mathematical Practioner of Hanoveriar England 1714-1840” Surveyor’s compass-W&S Jones who existed 1784-1838. This compass has the ability to measure angles without the use of the needle. Has inside vernier with central o (usage is prior to 1780). See Antique Scientific Instruments by Gerard L’Eturner, pg 34 (note). Screw under and next to pinion assembly locks unit into a fixed position to function as a standard surveyor’s compass with needle. Has excellent and early worm gear to helical gear clamp for ball and socket. (Needs screw for staff mounting to compass and needs sight vanes at North & South with one replacement.) Transit-by K&E s#91876 c1938 No. 740005 with unusual “U” standard that has modification to accept a 4” compass with 4” needle. Unusual precise adjustment of horizontal circle (called “two speed”) and double knob (one inside the other) on side that pull out approximately ¾” to 7/8” Transit-Stackpole & Brother, NY s#2346 signed on bottom of top plate “K&E Co. N.Y.” with tripod and rod, vernier, four-inch needle, and level. Microscope-binocular microscope with circular stage, and dual pillars. There is a substage rotating aperture control, and a clean mirror. Gross adjustment is via rack and pinion using the large knobs, and eyepieces can also be adjusted via smaller knobs. There is a fine focus adjustment just above the objective on the body tube. (See Billings #262 for a similar example.) No case, one objective and a pair of eyepieces. Note: Henry Crouch sold and made a range of optical goods, including some excellent microscopes. Instruments signed Henry Crouch, 54 London Wall (as is this example) are dated from 1868-1870. He moved to 51 London Wall in 1871. Serial numbers are on record from 315 to 10141. This example is marked #430. Caliper-Troughton & Simms, London large brass and steel. This was possibly used for steam engines, cannon, or other military use. Measures 21” outside, 23” inside diameter. Vernier measures to .001 inches over this length. Typewriter-Hammond with curved keyboard, has three levels of type- capitals, lower case and figures. Additionally, has English pound figure on key. (Probably made for the English market.) Folding microscope-fully equipped Ernst Leitz miniature s#252569 manufactured prior to 1920. It has two eyepieces (2K and 5K), one dual quick change (unusual change mechanism) objective, a separate 7X – 26X objective which can be used as a hand held instrument, coarse focus (manual), fine focus (screw thread), miniature Abbe substage condenser with iris diaphragm, mirror, two through holes in base for mounting. All in original leather case. Builders Transit-K&E s#10304 c1905 Pat Dec 3 89, stands 9” high with 7 ¾” telescope with vial plate vials, single 1” vernier on 5” diameter horizontal circle, on four screw leveling base. Transit -K&E distinctive form with twisted standards, black paint appears original, height 12 ½”, horizontal circle 5 ½”, vertical arc 5”, scope just under 12”, with box. Microscope-C Verick & E Hartmack Paris s#2572, brass with associated box. Microscope-Varley Stage American manufacture by James Queen and Co, Philadelphia made. Illustrated in Queens 1874 catalogue as Queens Large Family Microscope. Queen was an instrument maker as well as an importer of English instruments. This is an example of his own work. It has two objectives, one with adapter for industry standard, and other with adapter for French. Also has glass stage and several other parts in hidden drawer, additionally with several slides. Microscope-unusual and probably homemade with some parts apparently purchased from Boston area based on 58 59 60 61 62 63 64 65 66 67 68 69 70 71 72 73 74 75 76 77 78 79 supplies from Ogden, etc. Interesting kit, supplies, slides, etc. Note fine focus, construction of eyepiece and objectives in separate box. Includes oil immersion. Vacuum pump c1880 possibly by Queen of NY with glass bell. Combination barometer/altimeter with curved mercury thermometer. Barometer scale extends down to 15” inches of mercury (up to 20,000 feet of altitude). Microscope-Ernst Leitz, Wetzlar s#455563 like new in box complete with four additional objectives. International Time Recording Co (precursor to IBM), master and slave clock master register. German instrument that has telescope and swing out arms with scales, Askania s#99385. Unknown usage.
