Transit c1840 by John Roach 81 Nassau St, NY (John Roach moved to San Francisco in 1850’s.) Stamped on
inside lower plate “Repaired by A. Wissler St. Louis Mo.” (The four level screws appear to be replacements.)
Large unsigned American brass microscope, 20” tall closed, has a three-way table with chain drive, (note use of
taper pin, which is flat on one side, to hold mirror arm in position while rotating chain drive on table), non-standard

objective, standard introduced in 1858, came with adapter for female objective, includes objective as an addition.
Chain drive indicates McAllister or Zentmeyer as possible maker. See pg 15 figure 6 “Padgitt” picture of early
Spencer with similar construction.
Precise level made to coast survey specifications. See pg 139c Berger & Sons 1904 manual for more info on this
type of instrument.
Compass by W Young c1825-1831 with vernier, chain counter and typical round level. See Rittenhouse article
“Dating Young Instruments” Vol. 5 No. 1 pg 21 by Robert Miller.
Microscope by Bausch & Lomb s#1364 (marked on front of case) c1880. Rare, not shown in 1879 or 1883 catalog.
Possibly an intermediate step between those shown in the 1879 catalog and the 1883 catalog. The 1883 catalog puts
emphasis on their fine adjustment mechanism that is improved over similar mechanisms to be both adjustable and
serviceable. (Compare their sketch in their 83 catalog to sketch of mechanism in this unit. Could this be the first
version of this mechanism?) Upright arm is brass and is painted (we assume paint was necessary because of staining
etc when parallel blades soldered into position.)
Microscope-signed Baker London 244 High Holbron (appears to be by Zeiss.) Lenses and objectives signed C.
Zeiss, top of objective container shows Baker as agent. Box appears German. Box, microscope, and lock all have
XII on them.
Microscope signed Georges Oberhauser Place Dauphine 19 Paris s#1555, with excellent optics, wonderful test
pattern particularly at higher magnification.
Microscope-Bausch & Lomb s#8712 with box and extra lenses (note early Bausch & Lomb scopes had serial
number stamped in bottom of case only) with cylinder diaphragm.
Surveying or Nautical instrument-Henry Barrow c1838, maker of a Mariner’s compass and a gunner’s rule at the
National Maritime Musuem. Robinson’s name on label as predecessor, “Robinson, Thomas Charles 1821-1832 at
38 Devonshire St London. See pgs 433 & 434 “The Mathematical Practioner of Hanoveriar England 1714-1840”
Surveyor’s compass-W&S Jones who existed 1784-1838. This compass has the ability to measure angles without
the use of the needle. Has inside vernier with central o (usage is prior to 1780). See Antique Scientific Instruments
by Gerard L’Eturner, pg 34 (note). Screw under and next to pinion assembly locks unit into a fixed position to
function as a standard surveyor’s compass with needle. Has excellent and early worm gear to helical gear clamp for
ball and socket. (Needs screw for staff mounting to compass and needs sight vanes at North & South with one
replacement.)
Transit-by K&E s#91876 c1938 No. 740005 with unusual “U” standard that has modification to accept a 4”
compass with 4” needle. Unusual precise adjustment of horizontal circle (called “two speed”) and double knob (one
inside the other) on side that pull out approximately ¾” to 7/8”
Transit-Stackpole & Brother, NY s#2346 signed on bottom of top plate “K&E Co. N.Y.” with tripod and rod,
vernier, four-inch needle, and level.
Microscope-binocular microscope with circular stage, and dual pillars. There is a substage rotating aperture control,
and a clean mirror. Gross adjustment is via rack and pinion using the large knobs, and eyepieces can also be
adjusted via smaller knobs. There is a fine focus adjustment just above the objective on the body tube. (See
Billings #262 for a similar example.) No case, one objective and a pair of eyepieces. Note: Henry Crouch sold and
made a range of optical goods, including some excellent microscopes. Instruments signed Henry Crouch, 54
London Wall (as is this example) are dated from 1868-1870. He moved to 51 London Wall in 1871. Serial numbers
are on record from 315 to 10141. This example is marked #430.
Caliper-Troughton & Simms, London large brass and steel. This was possibly used for steam engines, cannon, or
other military use. Measures 21” outside, 23” inside diameter. Vernier measures to .001 inches over this length.
Typewriter-Hammond with curved keyboard, has three levels of type- capitals, lower case and figures.
Additionally, has English pound figure on key. (Probably made for the English market.)
Folding microscope-fully equipped Ernst Leitz miniature s#252569 manufactured prior to 1920. It has two
eyepieces (2K and 5K), one dual quick change (unusual change mechanism) objective, a separate 7X – 26X
objective which can be used as a hand held instrument, coarse focus (manual), fine focus (screw thread), miniature
Abbe substage condenser with iris diaphragm, mirror, two through holes in base for mounting. All in original leather

½”, vertical arc 5”, scope just under 12”, with box.
Microscope-C Verick & E Hartmack Paris s#2572, brass with associated box.
Microscope-Varley Stage American manufacture by James Queen and Co, Philadelphia made. Illustrated in Queens
1874 catalogue as Queens Large Family Microscope. Queen was an instrument maker as well as an importer of
English instruments. This is an example of his own work. It has two objectives, one with adapter for industry
standard, and other with adapter for French. Also has glass stage and several other parts in hidden drawer,
additionally with several slides.
Microscope-unusual and probably homemade with some parts apparently purchased from Boston area based on

Absentee Bidder Form
Dear Absentee Bidder,
Our listings provide a brief overview of each lot - this by no means represents a thorough evaluation, but does point out major
faults. Before you place a bid, we suggest that you view in person, have another attendee do your evaluation and bidding, or ask the
auction house for specific condition reports. Multiple lots should be considered to be either common grade pieces or in some state of
disrepair unless otherwise noted. Thank you, and we hope you enjoy your guaranteed purchase!
Directions for placing an Absentee Bid with Jones & Horan Auction Team:
1. Make sure you know exactly what you are bidding on! If you have any questions, call or email us. Please have all questions in to
us at least seven days prior to the auction. We guarantee all descriptions. We will promptly refund your money (along with any
shipping charges) if any errors were made in our verbal or printed descriptions.
2. Detach and use this form, (or use any form similar to this) and mail, fax or email us your bids. We must receive bids at least three
days prior to the auction date. There is no need for a deposit – we will trust you to pay promptly if you win bids. We will enact your
bids competitively. If there is more than one absentee bid on a lot, the item will start at one bid above the second highest.
3. Expect an invoice to be forwarded to you within the first five days following the auction if you are the winning bidder.
Jones and Horan uses these bid increments:
$10 - $200
$200 - $500
