About Sectors and Industries
REMI Policy Insight is available at various levels of industry detail. Industries are
defined at their most general level to the most detail in progressing from the 14-sector
model (1-digit S.I.C.) to the 53-sector (2-digit S.I.C.) and finally to the 172-sector model
(3-digit S.I.C.). The amount of industry detail you need depends on the type of policy
questions you are examining. REMI’s industries are mapped from the S.I.C. (Standard
Industrial Classification) Codes established by the Bureau of Labor Statistics according
to the following table.
BLS Sectors in REMI EDFS Industries
The different components of this table are identified as follows:

EDFS-14 Sectors in boldface

EDFS-53 Sectors in (parentheses)

EDFS-172 Sectors in [square brackets]
Note: Some subsector descriptions conclude with the term “nec,” which means “not
elsewhere classified.”
