ISO-3D MARKETING PLAN
MARKET OBJECTIVES
4.1.1 TARGET MARKET DESCRIPTION
Data mining and data warehousing are largely dominated by the U.S. software editors. This is the reason the
Consortium invited TGS ; being American but also European, TGS is the guarantee of the market access for the
ISO-3D visualisation technology.
The industrial context of the ISO-3D derived technologies is tightly connected to data mining and data warehousing.
The first use of the ISO-3D technologies is expected to be Industrial data mining Systems for professionals and/or
professional communities, but longer term market.
Along with the software product market access, the interest of the other partners and specifically of MATRA
Systèmes et Information is to leverage its applications market by offering add-on technologies like ISO-3D.
The application fields are numerous :
 financial engineering
 RAMS systems
 banking and insurance
 travel assistance information systems
 health management organisations or social security
 international crime fighting
 support to electronic commerce and environmental information systems.
At a later stage, the impact of ISO-3D technologies from a societal point of view will be dealt with as follows :
 a more interactive access of information by citizens, widening the space of democracy that is useful for domains
like environmental management or easier access to complex financial decisions concerning personal assets
 a more intuitive access, closer to the European citizen, of complex information ; in fact visualisation techniques
and standards can be considered as a new communication grammar and/or language, particularly useful for a
Europe where almost 20 different official languages are used.

4.1.3 DEFINITION OF THE ISO-3D PRODUCT'S COMPETITIVE ADVANTAGE (NEW TECHNOLOGY)
The goal of ISO-3D is to develop a Human-Centred Interface methodology and tools which offer a way to analyse
business information from a large collection of data in the financial, insurance, marketing, econometric and reliability
domain.
The main technology objective will be the integration of 3D interface library with data mining techniques in
order to propose an efficient way for the user to improve the business analysis. The ergonomics, cognitive science
and interpretation aspects will be specifically studied and evaluated but will focus on building an interface library to
be used with existing data mining tools, such as the ones developed in the European projects, SODAS and
NOEMIE.
Available Man-Machine Interfaces are very poor at representing such data. For example, the most important tools
provided by software editors have the same look as Microsoft Excel charts. However, Excel 2D or 3D charts are
directly understood by the user if data are summarised and limited to a few values. Specific interfaces are required
to help users derive maximum benefits from available results. 3D representations and animation with appropriate
navigation allow the user analysis space to be extended. With a 3D representation, it is possible to present the most
important variables (more than three) in the same visual space, presenting data which are correlated, navigating
through them, changing viewpoints, turning around data information, summarising or zooming. The navigation
process will be developed by IMFM, in collaboration with DMS, NAMUR and DAUPHINE. Navigation can be
completed by sound animation, which guides and informs the users of key information inside search space. Sound
needs to be clear and comprehensible, attractive and appealing. The University of NAMUR will develop 3D platform
visualisation with sound animation.
In this market, the integration of a data mining tool with a 3D library toolkit, combined with an ergonomic
methodology tool, will give to the consortium a clear competitive advantage in respect of data analysis application.
Another point is the wide distribution of Internet browsers on the computer market; at the present time, Web
technology permits and favours the development of Intranet applications using 3D graphics representations.

4.1.4 BUSINESS DEVELOPMENT
Two technical solutions could be envisaged by the ISO-3D consortium to develop the business :
1/ provide a library of C++ or Java graphics classes
The goal is to provide a specialized library dedicated to the symbolic object representation or adapted to the
multi-dimensional data visualization.
Target : application developers working for software editors
2/ provide several interactive components dedicated to vertical markets
In this case, the goal is to provide high level interactive components adapted to several types of users and
supplementary of the main Data management, Data Analysis & OLAP solutions.
These components will be adapted to the profile of the user; in other words, people working in the sales
division do not have the same needs than those working in the manufacturing, exploitation, financial or
marketing divisions. So the components have to be dedicated to the user according to his profile and to the
Data management & OLAP systems used by the company.
Target : large accounts, VARs, contractors...

PRODUCT DEFINITION
4.2.1 ISO-3D PRODUCT PRESENTATION
ISO-3D aims at developing a human-centred interface library, an ergonomic methodology and explanation tools to
be used on top of database analysis tools, mainly in response to limitations of current man-machine interfaces to
display and understand the relationships/interdependencies existing in huge databases
ISO-3D aims to overcome these limitations by developing a new generation library for building human
interfaces with sound animation, using an ergonomic methodology and a set of data interpretation tools.
Such a package, combined with data mining or KDD (Knowledge Discovery in Databases) techniques,
will provide a better support for interpreting and analysing financial data, insurance data, marketing data,
economics data, reliability application data, and so on. In the framework of this project, ISO-3D will be
used for two applications, one from the marketing domain and another from the financial domain.
The ISO-3D product will correspond to the following package toolkit:
 A methodology to formalise user interface for interpreting complex information and temporal symbolic data and
the tool to generate the appropriate interface
 A graphical library with sound animation for user interpretation of database patterns with ergonomic design.

ANALYSIS OF INTENDED MARKET
4.3.1 BACKGROUND AND STATE OF THE ART
4.3.1.1
Introduction
In this section, we present the state of the art for the following technologies of interest for the ISO-3D project :
 data mining & symbolic object interpretation. ISO-3D aims at developing a generic human-centred tool to be
used in conjunction with data mining tools.
 Ergonomics; ergonomics helps in designing easy-to-use, efficient, comfortable and secure human-centred
interfaces.
 3-D graphical representation; 3-D graphical representations have shown that they are useful in graphically
displaying multiple variables without overwhelming the operator.
 VRML representation : VRML is the current standard for developing 3-D graphics and needs to be accessed via
Internet.
 text-aided interpretation methods : Natural language can be used in human-centred interfaces to generate online explanations in order to better assist the operator.
 sound : the use of sound can support 3-D graphical display to help the operator to locate the information he
needs access to.
4.3.1.2
Methods
Data Mining & Symbolic object interpretation methods
Databases can become too large and too complex for human beings to understand : they need to be summarised.
As a result, a new kind of data is then necessary, since summarised data are no longer only numerical or
categorical values : much more complex information can be found, such as interval, histogram, weighted multivalued categorical or quantitative, time series, etc. : the symbolic data. Symbolic objects are new statistical
elements using symbolic data.
It is not sufficient to obtain a summary : the results must be easily understood. Graphical representations have
always proved to be a more efficient way to get a message across. Interpretation of symbolic objects needs an
appropriate graphical representation enhanced by sensible methods to guide the users through the space of
symbolic objects. This could result in situating one object amongst the others in time, space , or giving the particular
features of each one compared to the others.
Ergonomics methods
Ergonomics is the whole scientific knowledge related to the human being necessary to design tools, machines and
systems to be used with great comfort, great security and great efficiency. From this definition, we can see that
ergonomics have at its disposal a large amount of data applicable to ISO-3D :
 knowledge on human activity (physiological, psychological, sociological, …) or what is called "human factors",
 criteria and norms necessary to design systems with great comfort, security and efficiency, (Bastien & Scapin INRIA -, 1993 ; ISO 9241 - 1; INRS ND 1928 - 151 - 93 and ND 1816 - 142 - 91).
 ergonomic charter (Smith & Mosier, 1986 ; Vanderdonckt, 1996 ; Scapin, 1986)
 methods (ergonomic diagnostic, future end user integration in search for solutions, etc.), task analysis : MAD
(Sebillotte - INRIA - 1992) ; method : DIADEM (Boutruche - Thomson - 1994).
In the ISO-3D context, ergonomics allows to elaborate recommendations to be elaborated on the use of new
presentation and manipulation technologies related to human capabilities (perception and cognition) and adapted to
the needs of the end users.
The logical process needed to elaborate ergonomics recommendations is based on the following steps:

 analyse the usability context: this step allows the complexity of the work computerising to be appreciated and
ensures that nothing important is forgotten (type of user, tasks to be computerised, data used), (D. A. Norman Apple Computer Inc. - 1993);
 define the possibility of representation and manipulation technologies (3D graphics, explanation with natural
language, sound artefact), (J. Coutaz - IMAG -1994) ;
 study background in cognition capabilities, perception capabilities, space exploration strategies, biases
perception, (T. Selker - Almaden Research Center IBM - COACH, 1994);
 build the cross table between data families (quantitative mono-valued, quantitative multiple valued, qualitative
mono-valued, …) and technologies. The cross table will present the compatibility between each . This table is
the result of an hypothesis that curtails combinations a priori maladjusted.
 build guidelines for homogeneity, consistency, usability, user-friendliness,… ergonomics human machine
interface of the tool implementing all these technologies.
 evaluate library tools to assess if data say what they seem to say. In other words, such an evaluation allows it to
be checked with user tests wether the proposed tools are well adapted to the user needs, (R. ROA - Research
Center Xerox - 1995).
In order to identify tools for a better involvement of human factors engineering in the interface design process, a
usability context analysis based on human activities and needs is required.
The technology of human-computer interaction has recently acquired efficient new development tools. Among these
tools, one can note interface builders, such Interface Builder and XfaceMaker, that allow to design interface models
to be designed at low cost.
These models have to be the subject of an evaluation with representative end-users and have to be modified in an
iterative way until the usability criteria are fulfilled.
In ergonomics, tools developed for designers are based on several models : task model, application model,
dialogue model, presentation model, behaviour model, platform model, user model, and workplace model.
Several tools exist, e.g.: Humanoid (Szekely 92, Szekely 93 - ISI), Trident (Bodart 94b, Bodart 95a FUNDP), Genius
(Janssen 93), Janus (Balzert 95a) and Aladin (Ricard 94 - MS&I).
3 D graphical representation methods
Different 3D graphics methodology and tools are provided on the market. It is possible to distinguish general
graphic API and 2D/3D Graphic visualisation. General graphic API is concerned with graphic database
management, input device managing, output drivers for standard files and printing in different language like Fortran,
C, C++ or Java, 2D/3D visualisation tools for scientific representation (visualisation on 2D/3D meshes limit,
contouring, iso-lines, vector fields, skin, iso-surfaces, voxels, stream-lines transparency, cut planes, …) and
business graphics (multi-axis, curves, histogram, pie charts, legends, financial representations). The principal
competitors are ILOG (F), AVS (USA), Visual Numerics (USA), Nag (UK) and TGS (F).
TGS ,with two research centers in USA and in Europe, has proposed 3D development toolkits with OpenInventor
and MasterSuite. OpenInventor is a general 3D library developed with OpenGL (Silicon Graphics). In data analysis,
SGI proposed MineSet a Visual Data-Mining tools based on Open Inventor.
Sound methods
The use of sound in very interactive applications like video games is becoming very popular. It gives information
about the state of the game and contributes also to the atmosphere of the game.
The aural system is very powerful and not sufficiently used in interactive applications (different from games).
Sound is usually complementary to visual outputs because it increases the amount of information communicated to
users and reduces the amount of information to be treated in visual mode.
Sharing information between several modes of perception is a way to improve user performances. Redundant
information gives to the user several chances to identify it.

Moreover, in contrast with visual acuity, sound can be heard at 360° without the real need to concentrate on a
transmitter, thus giving greater flexibility. Sound can catch the use’s attention while he works.
Sound can be used as a means to explore the information.
Mereu and Kazman [96] have shown that it was possible to describe a 3D Graph with sound and they have
evaluated user performance by means of this representation. Sound can be used to explore statistical data. For
example, information on variable type, distribution, missing data, extraordinary data, can be given by sound.
We intend to provide information on characteristics of SO by sound linked to a graphical representation.
4.3.2 MAIN COMPETITOR IDENTIFICATION

4.3.3 MARKET CHARACTERISTICS (NATURE, BARRIERS, RISKS)
There are many graphic solutions on the markets
Most of the main editors of OLAP and statistic tools provide specialized graphic modules. Right now, there are not
universal graphic solution adapted to the visualization of symbolic objects and multi-dimensional data. New graphic
representation have to be explored in partnership with the main software editors, users of large accounts and
research centers.
Which type of representation ? and how to impose those as a de facto standard ?
The consortium is working on a new way to graphically analyze symbolic objects and multi-dimensional data.
That is a matter for ergonomic people and users of ERP, statistic and OLAP applications to define together
universal graphic representations for symbolic objects and multi-dimensional data.

ISO-3D FINANCIAL ANALYSIS
RETURN ON INVESTMENT (ROI)
5.1.1 TGS ANALYSIS
TGS has been a leading vendor of interactive graphics software for 15 years, delivering cross-platform solutions to
professional developers for organisations and companies working in scientific data analysis, CAD/CAM, simulation,
visualisation of very large model of data, modelling, image processing, Geographical Information Systems ,etc…
Strategic benefits:
One of the main goals of TGS for 1999 is to develop graphical analysis solutions for vertical markets, such as
banks, insurance, statistics, marketing, web sites, data-mining, investment, fraud detection, manufacturing, failure
analysis ,etc A new generation of computational techniques and tools is required to support the analysis of growing
volumes of data.
In today's ever-changing and competitive marketplace, every business depends on information from data in order to
make rapid and intelligent decisions. However, it is not the quantity, but the quality of the information that give your
business that competitive edge.
Also, at the end of the project, TGS would like to introduce a specialised toolkit that converts any type of data of any
quantity and complexity into insightful, interactive 3D visual representations. This toolkit will be a new breed of
software that, for the first time, enables developers to easily integrate interactive multidimensional visualisation
capabilities into new or existing Windows and UNIX applications.
This data visualisation solution will augment the value of business applications by increasing a decision maker's
effectiveness. The human mind is adept at recognising visual patterns, but slower to find the patterns that are
hidden in rows and columns of numbers. These 3D visualisations will provide business users with a powerful tool for
quickly absorbing large quantities of complex information, as well as allowing them to perform interactive "what if"
analyses against these large data-sets. A user will be able to interactively change one or several variables within a
3D visualisation - a picture of the data - and "see" the immediate impact on their business.
Economic benefits:
The participation in the methods and specifications of the ISO-3D project will allow a new vertical product adapted
to Data management (ERP), Data Analysis (statistic), Business Access (OLAP, decision systems) to be quickly
defined. In this case, the targets are large accounts.
It can be added that TGS is targeting an other segment: Independent Software Vendors for OLAP, ERP and
statistic markets. These editors are looking for high quality graphical representation of multi-dimensional data.

ISO-3D DISSEMINATION
INDUSTRIALISATION EFFORT
6.1.1 TECHNICAL STEPS
TGS is the toolkit provider for the development of the ISO-3D graphic part. The industrialisation effort concerns
three steps :
 TGS technical support and expertise for all the ISO-3D consortium graphic developers
 TGS integration of the source code provided by all the ISO-3D consortium graphic developers
 TGS packaging of the ISO-3D graphic product (media production & documentation publication)
6.1.2 TGS EUROPE PRODUCT MANAGEMENT
TGS product management will refer to the internal Quality Insurance Plan.
The TGS software Quality Insurance methodology is based on the common practices in the software industry.
The mainspring of the TGS actions for all development is the control of:
 the project management
 the specifications
 the development of the requested functionality
These services will have the same level of quality as TGS uses for the development of all its own graphic products.
Project management:
The project management is mainly based on development team planning.
First of all, TGS will name a project manager for the entire project. He will be in charge of:
 Control of the specifications’ validity
 Realization of the general analysis
 Management of the development team.
The project manager is the main interlocutor for the ISO-3D prime contractor.
Experimented software engineers make up the development team.
The project management will permit the scheduled tasks to be checked
In reference with their own software product development, TGS proposes a methodology based on the following :
 periodic meetings and reviews
 reports of meetings
 delivery schedule management
respect of the proposed services (specification, meeting, on-site intervention, documentation)

MS&I EXPLOITATION PLAN
8.1.1 MATRA SYSTÈMES & INFORMATION (MS&I)
Matra Systèmes & Information is specialised in Information, Communication and
Image Information Systems for Space and Defence and in various civilian sectors. Matra
Systèmes & Information is the European leader for Ground receiving and processing
stations and the French leader for C3I (command, control, communication and
intelligence) systems.
These activities are supported by a high competence in system architecture, in large
software systems developments and integration, in high value added computing power
devices and in real-time parallel computing. This company also develops geographic
information and signal processing products.
Matra Systèmes & Information has six main fields of activity :

Spaceborne and airborne observation systems, associated user
ground segments,

Command, Control, Communication and Intelligence (C3I) and
aircraft Mission Planning and Rehearsal systems,

Integrated Logistic Systems.

Telecommunication networking integration and administration,

Digital mapping products and systems,

Signal and Image Processing applications,
All Matra Systèmes & Information’s developments are supported by a Research and
Development department (DTEA) which employs 60 graduate engineers for basic
research and algorithms development.
In this department, MS&I is developing a new field of activity relative to data warehouse
and data analysis in connection with its main fields of activity, Artificial Intelligence, Data
Bases and Man Machine Interaction.
8.1.2 DATA ANALYSIS ACTIVITY
Matra Systèmes & Information is not a services or software products distributor. Matra
Systèmes & Information is an integrator of complete solutions for complex systems that
need both hardware and software components.
The data analysis activity therefore represents a part of the knowledge needed to build
complete solutions in an industrial context. This knowledge covers three main aspects:


Version : 1.0
Matra Systèmes & Information has been working in the area of data analysis for more
than three years, and has capitalised knowledge sufficiently to be able to propose a
complete, coherent and efficient approach to its clients for the integration of data analysis
in their systems.
This competence, acquired from the NOEMIE project and based on a strong background
in the fields of Data Bases and Systems Design, is going to be completed by the results of
the ISO-3D project, which represents the essential complement to the data mining
technology for a more efficient analysis.
It is very important to note that use of both technologies such as data mining and 3D
representation makes Matra Systèmes & Information competitive and gives it a
competitive edge over the other software integrators or service providers.
8.1.3 ISO-3D EXPLOITATION
8.1.3.1
Objectives of Matra Systèmes & Information in ISO-3D
The objectives of Matra Systèmes & Information in ISO-3D are:

to reinforce its offer in respect of large systems for major companies
and especially with regard to the financial, insurance and health
market,

to improve its own development process, integrating Human Factors in
development methodology,

to industrialise its background in development method and tools.
To reach these objectives, Matra Systèmes & Information aims to complete its
methodological background, defined for a generic context in Command, Control,
Communication and Information Systems, with specific elements from Data Analysis
needs. Both the method and the tool will first be completed with concepts needed for Data
Analysis, and then transferred in a standard context (such as UML). This last point is very
important because it is the guarantee of a greater diffusion, in Matra Systèmes &
Information own projects, but in terms of quality it also presents a serious image to
prospective clients.
8.1.3.2
Exploitation
Matra Systèmes & Information will exploit the results of ISO-3D both in a an internal and
in an external way.

8.1.3.2.1 Internal exploitation
Matra Systèmes & Information is currently introducing a guide, call "Guide to take into
account Human Factors in development process", into its quality referential.
The objective of this guide is to help all Matra Systèmes & Information project manager to
take into account Human Factors in their development process.
This guide points, at a methodological level, the way to introduce end user requirements,
tasks or activities, activity contexts, organisation with formal and informal communication
or exchange, etc .It recommends a formal approach to formalise task analysis and activity
context.
Matra Systèmes & Information will update this guide with the ISO-3D results.
8.1.3.2.2
External exploitation
The results of ISO-3D will be used for more than the Data analysis context itself:

banking and insurance, both handling complex multidimensional data ;

advertisement departments of big corporations to allow focusing of
advertisement by group of customers or even individuals ;

polling and statistical institutes ;

TV and radio broadcasters for audiometry purposes because real
audience of TV programs is hard to analyse.
The project partners will elaborate a common business development strategy at the end
of the project where software editors like TGS and CISIA will be in charge of product
marketing and sales and in turn MS&I in charge of delivering integrated information
systems for corporations and / or users for the services provided by HACHETTE.

M.Noirhomme, professor of Statistics in this Computer Science Department ,is a member of the “Conseil
Supérieur de Statistique” of INS (Belgian Statistical National Institute) and participates in several
European and Local projects.
Thus, several means can be proposed to spread the results of the ISO-3D project:
-
Teaching of symbolic methods and graphical tools to students in computer science, within statistics
courses.
-
Presentation of ISO-3D results to colleagues of other departments (ie Economics Mathematics,
Biology, Geography ) or Universities (Liege, ULB, UCL).
-
Presentation of methods and tools to National Statistical Societies with which I have personal
contacts ( INS, EUSTAT, ONS, INE)

ING-BANK EXPLOITATION PLAN
Exploitation of the results in ING Bank will focus on facilitating portfolio managers in management and research
activities, this being part of their main task.
Portfolio management combines different types of information from different sources. Therefore, it is difficult for
portfolio managers to have a total overview of the value, risk, or performance of a particular portfolio during a
certain time. It is also more difficult to have an insight view in the different aspects that influence the current or nearby value of a portfolio or a mix of portfolios.
The aim of the project is to facilitate the construction of a 3D image of a particular portfolio, or a mix of portfolios.
The 3D image should provide an easy access to different information items that influence the value, risk or
performance of a (mix of) portfolio(s) at a certain time or during a particular period.
It is expected that the use of 3D interfaces will support the manager in achieving these goals in a more easy way. It
will also offer him more facilities to access the required information, or it may guide him in setting strategies for the
short or medium term future concerning the management of the portfolios.
The system is expected to be profitable in the sense that it may reduce the processing and simplify the actions to be
taken. The system is expected to reduce risks as well, because of the total overview and the access to related
information. The portfolio managers will use the system during their daily operations. As there are no experiences
available with comparable systems, it is hard to quantify the return on investment, but one or two percent increase
in performance more than justifies the effort.

DMS EXPLOITATION PLAN
The Dipartimento di Matematica e Statistica (DMS) is a University Department that aims at developing
research in Statistics as well as in Economics. Therefore, the ISO-3D project results will turn out to be
exploited by DMS in the research undertaken in the framework of symbolic multidimensional data analysis. In
fact, as a public research body, DMS intended market is institutionally constituted by the entire international
scientific community as well as by all possible and interested users of statistical techniques, both public and
private, towards which DMS directs its commitment. In this respect, being internationally known for its
scientific achievements, DMS holds a privileged position for internationally diffusing the results of its
research.
While offering original dedicated methodological contributions, DMS will gain the following benefits:
1) availability of software tools and technologies in order to manage and organise usually available huge
databases;
2) implementation of the new proposed techniques in a well-suited software product;
3) validation of the original scientific methods on real data.
Moreover, the ISO-3D project represents a unique environment for the development of tools helping people
to better interpret results yielded by a data analysis. This objective is of primary interest to the DMS mission
and is perfectly accomplished within the ISO-3D framework whose methodology clearly addresses
interpretation issues by focusing its attention on the use of dynamic three-dimensional graphical
environments for the development of human-based interfaces.
Finally, an important part will be represented by the dissemination of the application results within the RAI
company. The return gained by RAI will be evaluated in terms of the assessment of the programmes within
its palimpsest. The final product resulting from ISO-3D will help RAI in monitoring the behaviour of its
programmes with respect to its competitors in terms of preferences given by the TV audience. Therefore, the
information retrieved from applying the ISO-3D product to RAI data will have a direct impact on their
marketing policies. At the moment, there is no available product capable of performing such tasks so that RAI
has identified no competitors with which to compare the ISO-3D advantages according to its own
requirements.
