UWS School of Medicine

Students have just completed their first semester at the new School of Medicine at

UWS and there are a couple of things which may be of interest to you:

1. The UWS School of Medicine has issued an S.O.S calling for volunteer patients to

9 assist young medical students as part of the first year of their degree. To help students learn, the school needs up to 50 volunteers with a long term chronic illness that allows them to remain living independently (eg. Complicated diabetes, emphysema). Each volunteer will be interviewed (non-intrusive) by 2 students for up to 1 hour.

Interviews will include a history of the illness, how it is treated (and by whom) and how it affects their everyday life. If you (or someone you know) are interested, please call: Mrs Marine Lye (UWS) on 4620 3370

2. The School is developing a network of Friends of the School of Medicine - people who are interested in finding out about the School, the students and how the community can be involved with the School. If you are interested in becoming a

Friend, please contact medschool@uws.edu.au, with "Friends" in the subject line. An application form and further details will be emailed or posted to you.

The University of Wollongong Graduate School of Medicine has received

$16.3 million from the Federal Government to fund its rural clinical placement program for the next four years. The GSM was established with the primary aim of addressing the chronic shortage of medical practitioners outside capital cities training doctors to work as general practitioners and specialists in regional, rural and remote areas of Australia. GSM gives students clinical training in doctor’s surgeries, clinics and hospitals in towns across regional NSW, comprising of a short placement during their first year and a year-long integrated community and hospital placement in the third year. This funding will provide operational funds to assist students with accommodation, transport and IT support during their placements. A proportion will also be allocated to upgrading facilities at rural medical facilities and to provide rooms for medical education as well as provide academic and administrative support to the students while they are participating in the program.
