tia n e m e D es Servic lity i b a s i D s Service Asian Heritage Group Consultation Event 4th August 2009 Heaton Moor Centre E or BM f s e c i Serv ties uni m m o C ian s A e h T tre n e C e g Herita Who took part? Event Basics Participants were recruited via publicity distributed by the Asian Heritage Centre at the Heaton Moor Centre. The event was staffed with both facilitators experienced in “pinpoint” style consultation events and staff able to provide interpreting services. The event ran from 11am to 3pm and consisted of two distinct sections, one for male participants and one for female participants, reflecting the fact that the Centre normally provides separate spaces within the building for each gender. A culturally appropriate lunch buffet was provided for participants. Participant demographics Due to the informal nature of the event, with people coming and going throughout the day – not all of whom participated in the consultation - it was not possible to record the exact numbers of participants. Approximately 35 people are believed to have participated, of whom one third were male and two thirds female. The majority of participants were Members of the Centre, however there was also one participant who identified as a Carer, and two who identified as “Other”. All of the Members participating were from the Asian Community and the majority fell into the 60-80 age range. Method of Consultation A number of pin-boards were positioned around the main room in the venue. Each pin-board focussed on a different topics area. The primary topics were: o Disability services o Dementia services o Services for the BME community o The Asian Heritage Centre Each pin-board had sections for participants to record their views on a number of aspects of the service area in question. The aspects included positive things about the service area in question, elements that needed improvement, and ideas for how improvement could be made. Participants recorded their views on coloured cards which were then positioned on the boards. The colour of the cards varied depending on the type of participant: o Members used Yellow cards o Carers used Green cards o Others (e.g. staff, volunteers) used Blue cards Participants were also asked to rate the service area overall, by placing sticky dots on a “very poor” to “very good” continuum. For the Asian Heritage Centre pin-board, additional questions were asked related to the benefits participants received from accessing the Centre, and in what other ways participants felt their day time needs could be met. At the end of the process, participants were asked to record any other comments and to evaluate the event itself, using similar methods of comment cards and sticky dots. The majority of the participants took part by moving from pin-board to pinboard as individuals or in pairs with facilitators / interpreters floating between participants providing assistance as required. A number of the male participants expressed a preference to have a group discussion and comments and views raised in this discussion were then transferred onto cards and sticky dot ratings and placed on the appropriate boards.
