A tremendous effort is underway in south Florida to find a way to restore the
natural ecosystems. Agriculture is one of the important compounds of the
restoration. Agricultural lands buffer natural systems from urban areas, inhibit
urban sprawl, provide jobs and agricultural products with sales of over $2 billion
for Palm Beach, Hendry, St. Lucie, and Miami-Dade Counties alone. However,
chemical use and water management practices for crop production directly affect
natural ecosystem in south Florida. Our research group is working on Best
Management Practices (BMPs) to protect our ecosystem and sustain crop
production. We will present research information on crop nutrient/pesticide and
irrigation management in Miami-Dade County.
