The Enos Male below, called himself William Enos Male when he went to South Australia. I
could not find out when Enos left England. He was missing in the Census figures, long before
he turned up in Victoria from Fremantle… It intrigued me, because I had seen a copy of a
letter from William’s daughter to her cousin Eli Male, the son of this Enos. I felt there had to
be a mystery surrounding the sudden appearance of Enos after being missing from England.
In early 2001, Sarah Hawkins found that he had been sentenced to 10 years hard labour for
stealing in England and was deported to Fremantle. He spent almost a year in the English jail
before he was boarded out to Fremantle. When my late wife Joan and I visited some of Enos’
descendants in the mid 1990’s they did not believe that he was Enos. No, he was William Enos.
Therefore no relation to William Male of Bealiba.
January 2010, I find in the South Australian BDM’s his marriage notice, and his father is
given as Simeon Male.
I rest my case
He was reported by his descendants to have been a highly religious man. Then we find his
younger brother John up on 7 charges of sheep stealing. John beat the rap, but brother William
ordered him off the place never to put foot back in Victoria. One is left to wonder if William
advised Enos to move on.
