The Division approved and the proposal will be placed on the Consent Agenda. APPROVED Minutes – BCATSS September 17, 2011 4. Page 2 Instructional Equipment Requests Automotive – Brian Hagopian’s request was for screwdriver sets; OBD and CAN scanners; 260-piece tool sets; wrench and drive tool sets for the Automotive program. Many of the tools currently being used are broken and were acquired at the program’s inception. If the tools are not broken they are obsolete and not compatible with the current make and model cars students practice on, which adds to the difficulty of teaching up-to-date repair techniques. The request for funds to purchase and make available new tools will help bring the program up to par with what’s current in the automotive field. Computer Science Information – Debbie Fields request was for 5-iPads with accessories to provide students with teaching materials that would allow them to explore new ways to integrate technology in their daily lives. The students would learn hands-on by using upto-date relevant computing devices and related technology tools. Computer Network Systems – John Gonder’s CNT and CISCO class equipment is in need of updating and upgrades. His request is to purchase CISCO routers, switches and wireless access points. Computer Science – Colin Schatz requested 5-Apple Macbooks to add to the existing 15 similar machines on a lockable laptop cart already acquired that supports the Mobile Apple Program. Completing the cart would benefit the students in the Apple program and similar courses within the Computer Science area. Welding – The following four proposals were submitted by Scott Miner for consideration: 1) The AWS (American Welding Society) Code Reference Textbook in the lab is now outdated and the funds would be put towards purchasing a new updated 2010 edition. 2) The Miller 750A welding machine is in need of a new power resistor and the funds requested would cover the repair. 3) The funds requested are to cover the cost of repairing the 2 existing Miller MSM42 Spot Welders, which is less expensive then purchasing new equipment. 4) The current Pipe Beveling equipment in the Welding Lab is ineffective and inefficient. A new machine would allow students to operate and prepare them for the use in pipe and tube welding operations. MOTION was made to accept all Instructional Equipment proposals and move them forward to the PBC. R. Chopra (1st) / J. Virgilio (2nd) / APPROVED APPROVED Minutes – BCATSS September 17, 2011 5. Page 3 Talking Points for August 17, 2011 Student Learning Outcomes Assessments From the Talking Points taken from the most recent Student Learning Outcomes Committee meeting, indicate that there are new web forms which can be used with declared scores (class aggregate scores). Faculty may use the new Web form to send your declared scores for course level SLOs to Scott Vigallon, who will enter the data in eLumen. Faculty may also use the new Web form to send in program outcomes. A tutorial is available that shows how to enter data in eLumen. Workshops will be offered to help all faculty members with the use of these forms and eLumen. They will be held: Sept. 15 at 1 – 2 PM in the TLC Oct. 5 at 1:30 – 2:30 PM in the TLC Nov. 2 at 1:30 – 2:30 PM in the TLC The Committee asks that all faculty members who have not entered SLO data from last spring to please enter it as soon as possible and develop their program outcomes if this has not been done. Accreditation Mid-Term Report Plans are being made to begin the Mid-Term Accreditation Report which is due Fall 2012. The Report is to be completed in Spring 2012 and ready for approval by College Council and the Board of Trustees by Summer 2012. Independent Study/Special Projects Classes Plans are initiated for the Independent Study/Special Projects form to be placed in a pdf “fillable” format online for instructor use. The form can be generated by faculty, signed, and submitted to the division dean for review and signature. It will then be sent to the Office of Instruction for the Vice President’s review and signature. Instead of completing the paper document that has traditionally been returned to the faculty member at the end of the semester for grade assignment, Sarah Aubert is completing the process for the grade to be submitted online like all other course grades. Independent Study forms should be submitted no later than the beginning of late start classes in order for the students to complete the required number of contact hours for the units attempted. Discipline Plans At the CEMC meeting held on Friday, September 16, 2011, it was determined that Discipline Plan information for the 2012 – 2013 academic year will be sent to faculty representatives in Mid-October. Dr. Tom Orf will provide that information following the next District Enrollment Management Committee (DEMC) and the Campus Enrollment Management Committee (CEMC) meetings in early October. APPROVED Minutes – BCATSS September 17, 2011 6. Page 4 Facility-Wide News Child Development Center – The Center is now licensed and an Open House is scheduled for Thursday, September 29th from 9:30 – 11:30 a.m. Families who are interested in enrolling or have already enrolled their children are invited to attend. A brief welcome speech followed by a tour of the facility is planned. The Center will officially open and welcome its first group of children on Monday, October 3rd. Science Building – The addition to the Science Building has continued to move forward with completion expected during Summer 2012. Student Services and Administration Building – The progress on the Student Services and Administration Building is moving at a rapid pace. 7. Information Exchange Career Technical Education Update – Vicki Shipman handed out a brochure published by an organization from the State Chancellor’s Office that sets the premise of Career and Technical Education (CTE). CTE was first known as Occupational Education then Vocational Education and has evolved into what it is referred to now. Intergrading core curriculum and occupational education in order to centralize programs and make them successful are covered in this brochure. The Technical Educational Collaborative (TEC) was mentioned and its involvement with high school students and the college that assists with offering career paths that students can choose to follow that may lead into CTE programs. Reviewed briefly were each of the points under the section titled “Eleven Elements of a High-Quality CTE System” followed by a brief question/answer session. One of Vicki’s goals is to form a CTE Sub-Committee that will provide information and feedback related to CTE programs to assist with the allocation of CTE funding. She also would like to rebuild the CTE website and bring it up-to-date. She welcomes all who are interested in being part of this committee. Streamlining the high school articulation process is another one of Vicki’s goals. She would like to have renewal agreements submitted all at the same time from programs that have expired agreements, instead of having schools submit them all throughout the year. Announcements A Proposal Writing Basics Workshop is scheduled for September 23rd from 3-4:30 pm in Room 2416, which already has 30 non-profit organizations signed up to attend. Anyone interested in attending this hands-on workshop is welcomed. The Instructor Initiated Approval Form was explained by Christina Lee who stated that it could be used by instructors in various disciplines who feel a student has satisfied the prerequisite for a class. An appointment with a counselor would be avoided if the instructor takes into consideration the students’ professional work experience, industry certification(s) earned, or other areas the student has satisfied the prerequisite.
