Temple University’s
New Online Master of Science Degree in Career and Technical Education (MS in
CTE)
Begins January 2016
Frequently Asked Questions
How many courses will I have to take? The Online MS in CTE consists of nine 3-credit graduate
courses and a 3-credit internship. The program is competency- based and aligns with the
Pennsylvania Inspired Leadership Program (National Institute for School Leadership [NISL]
standards).
Where are the courses held? This program uses WebEx to deliver all of the classes online so
students can access class anywhere they have a high-speed internet connection. There are no
face-to-face classes.
When are the courses offered? CTE leadership classes in the Online MS in CTE program are
held during the regular fall and spring semesters. They typically meet on Tuesday or Thursday
evenings at 7:00 PM. The Educational Administration classes which are part of the Online MS
in CTE are typically scheduled during summer semesters.
What are the classes like? The online classes engage students by means of large group
discussion, lecture, small group interaction, and student sharing sessions. Students are
required to apply concepts from school-based, job-embedded assignments. Class size is
typically 12-15 students. Enrollment in the Educational Administration courses may be larger.
How long will it take to complete the program? The length of time a student needs to
complete the program depends on a number of factors. Students may have taken previous
administrative coursework that can be used to waive course requirements (typically 3-6
credits). Students who choose to complete the entire program can accomplish this in a twoyear period (2 classes per semester for two years and 1 class each summer). Temple University
allows a maximum of six credits to be transferred in at the graduate level. You will take 24 to
30 credits to earn the Online MS in CTE.
What about the internship? Students can complete all internship requirements in their local
school or career and technology center without the need for travel.
What credentials will I receive upon completion of the program? Students who successfully
complete the online MS Leadership Program will earn a Master of Science Degree in Career
and Technical Education. Students may opt to pursue only a Vocational Supervisor Certificate
before completing the entire program by taking five classes and successfully passing the Praxis
Educational Leadership, Administration, and Supervisor exam. Those students interested in
the Vocational Director Certificate must complete the remaining five classes in the program
and pass the Praxis School Leaders Licensure Assessment. Students who earn the Vocational
Director certificate can also qualify for a Principal certificate through the Pennsylvania
Department of Education.
Can I take courses prior to entering the degree program? Yes. Persons interested in the
program may begin taking classes during the fall of 2015 and apply to the Online MS in CTE
program in January 2016. Courses taken in the fall of 2015 can be applied to the Online MS in
CTE.
