Scaling within SITACS Subjects Email sent 17 June 2004 OPTION 1 Student receives A for assignments, and E for exam. E >= 30: Final mark is E + A 25 <= E < 30: Final mark is MIN (E+A, 49) 25 > E: Final mark is MIN (E+A, 44) Notes: Student with E >=30 can get any grade from F to HD. Student with 25 <= E < 30 can get either grade F (1-44) or PC (45-49) Student with E < 25 can only get F (1-44) OPTION 2 E >= 45%: Final mark is E + A 40% <= E < 45%: Final mark is E + A or a maximum of 49 40 > E: Final mark is E + A or a maximum of 44 (The Faculty of Science does this in Chemistry and Biology.) OPTION 3 Students must make a serious attempt and perform satisfactorily on all phases of the subject to pass. In particular, all components of the subject must be seriously attempted and students must achieve at least 40 per cent on the final examination to complete the subject; that is, to obtain an overall mark of 45 or higher. (Economics use this statement) Yes it is legal as long as the students are informed in the subject outline as it is a performance criteria. Remember if you don't list the formula you will use for scaling on the subject outline you can NOT scale the final mark SJ
