CHAPTER 40 – SPECIAL SCALING PROBLEMS
41.2 – Chunks, Slabs, and Small Logs.
5. For contracts with minimum scaling specifications (lengths and diameters) that contain a
gross scale of less then 10 b.f.., the recorded volume will be 10 b.f.
Example: Minimum scaling specifications length 8’
diameter 6” – recorded volume – 10 b.f.
The revised 2400-6 contract does not specify a minimum net scale. The intent of this contract is
to maximize the removal of sound wood meeting the size by the minimum diameter specification
listed in the contract; however, material presented for scaling cannot be charged for if it has a
diameter smaller than that stated in the contract.
Example: When special provision R2-C6.823 is included in the contract, dead shall be
scaled as presented.
Some contracts show a minimum diameter for dead as 10 inches. The material must be utilized
and paid for to 10 inches; however, material smaller than 10 inched will not be charged for but
must be recorded.
Broken pieces cause a problem:
If the log was broken in the woods and only one end is affected, the bucker could have bucked
the log to make the log merchantable by varying the length to fully utilize all material to the
break. If it is judged that this log was broken in thew oods and the material could have been
utilized, the log should have been charged for and recorded. However, a piece presented with
both ends borken will not be charged for if it does not contain the minimum length stated int eh
contract. This log should be recorded, but a dash recored in the proper species column.
