11th January 2013 Dear Parents/ Guardians, Firstly, we would like to take this opportunity to wish you all a very happy new year and hope that you enjoyed a wonderful Christmas break. Thank you so much for all the Christmas cards and gifts – we were quite overwhelmed by your generosity and kindness. We are delighted to welcome Miss Glister to the team as Mole Class Teacher. She has worked closely with Miss Mantle over the past half term and is very much enjoying getting to know her new class. Once upon a Town’. It focuses on characters and events Our topic this half-term is called ‘ from traditional stories, such as The Three Little Pigs, Hansel and Gretel and Little Red Riding Hood. It is a fantastic starting point for lots of literacy work including role play, as you may have heard for the teachers and children alike! We will be hosting a ball for Cinderella towards the end of the term and writing newspaper articles about what happens. The home learning this half term is to make a house for a character from a traditional story, for example Rapunzel’s castle, a gingerbread house, a house for one of the Three Little Pigs or Grandma’s Cottage. You can make this using a cereal box, soap box, yoghurt pots- it should be a very fun way to reuse some of the items we often throw away at home! Please bring them in for our celebration event on Thursday 14th February at 3.00pm which you are all invited to. During our Science work this half term we will be investigating different materials and their properties, and using what we find out to help us solve various problems for story characters, such as what material they should use for new clothing, or how they could safely travel across a river. Please continue reading regularly with your child at home to help assist your child’s progress in literacy. We would also really appreciate if you could write a short comment in your child’s reading record book each time you read. It can be as simple as a smiley face to say you have read the book or a written comment as to how they have done. As well as practising the skill of sounding out unfamiliar words, we would encourage you to work on reading skills such as use of expression, awareness of punctuation such as exclamation marks and your child’s comprehension and understanding of what they have read. It is really important that P.E. kits are clearly named and kept in school. Please ensure that your child has their own plimsolls in school at all times, these should also be clearly labelled. As we have had a whole term in school can you check that your child’s plimsolls still fit. Many thanks for your continuing support. Yours sincerely, Chloë Glister Mole Class Roisín Philip Rabbit Class Susie Mew Owl Class
