Students are responsible for recording and maintaining their own points. PLEASE NOTE: MID-TERM GRADING: If Mid-Term grades must be assigned, they are generally required to be submitted too early in the semester for complete accuracy. Thus, a “C” grade will be assigned to students who are passing and an “F” grade will be assigned to students who are either failing, are marginal or who, if continuing to perform in the same manner, are earning a failing grade. Those students assigned an “F” grade will be contacted by counselors. Examinations: Four examinations will be given during the semester worth 100 points each, with an additional extra credit problem worth 10 points. They will consist of true/false, multiple choice questions and problems. The exams may cover all information and text material assigned, whether or not explicitly covered in class. Exams submitted after the due date and time will have an automatic 25 points deducted from the score, with the exception of the final exam. DUE TO TIME CONSTRAINTS TO SUBMIT GRADES, NO LATE FINAL EXAMS WILL BE ACCEPTED. The instructor will make every attempt to grade the exams expeditiously and review the results with the class, if requested during the next class meeting after the exam. Due to the software limitations of Canvas, students are encouraged to print a hard copy of the exams, complete them offline and then enter the answers into Canvas. Exam scores of students who do this have been historically higher. Academic Integrity and Student Conduct: Student conduct shall conform to the standards of conduct as set forth in the Western Nevada College Catalog. Cheating in any form or manner shall result in and automatic grade of “F” for the semester Homework: Homework should be completed using the Wiley Plus homework management system which comes free with a new textbook purchase and is due on the dates indicated. AGAIN, if you purchase a used textbook, you must purchase the WileyPlus access separately. This access code allows use of the WileyPlus application. The system formats all the homework for you and gives you helpful hints as you attempt each problem. It also gives you immediate feedback on whether or not your homework is correct. You will have 5 attempts to get the homework correct before answers can be accessed. Homework is graded on EFFORT. Since the WileyPlus software provides solutions to the homework, we will not review homework in class unless a student had difficulty understanding the solution. The appropriate text chapters should be read carefully and in full before attempting the assignments. Students are expected to work through all of the assigned problems prior to class and to participate in class discussions. Please note that the textbook and the software offer more exercises and problems at the end of each chapter than will be assigned. The assigned problems are the minimum which should be completed to ensure an understanding of the material. If a student is not fully comfortable with the material after doing the assigned problems, working additional exercises or problems is recommended. Working homework problems with other students is encouraged. However, each student must be logged in to their own account in order to receive credit. Homework must be completed prior to each exam. For example, prior to Exam 1, the homework for Chapters 1, 2 and 3 must be completed in order to receive credit. See the accompanying assignment schedule for class, homework and exam schedules. This schedule should be maintained by the student at all times and brought to each scheduled class. Fewer classes are scheduled, as this class is a blended inclass and online format. Disability Services: Western Nevada College supports providing equal access for students with disabilities. Any student with a disability should contact the Disability Support Services Office (Cedar 209) to arrange for appropriate accommodations. Susan Trist (DSS Coordinator) is available to discuss appropriate academic accommodations students may require. Please contact Susan Trist (775) 445-4459 or susan.trist@wnc.edu at your earliest convenience. The Disability Support Assistant is Rachel Endel, Cedar 210. Her contact information is as follows: Rachel.endel@wnc.edu Phone: (775) 445-4402 Fax: (775) 445-3150 Attire: Accounting is a business class and, as such, students should be aware that business clothing is the most appropriate attire in the workplace. However, since the class is scheduled after work, more casual attire will be acceptable. In the classroom, pajamas and/or hats are not appropriate and torsos should not be visible. Quizzes: Eleven (11) quizzes, worth 10 points each, are assigned during the semester, the lowest grade dropped. Students will be given two attempts in Canvas at the quizzes, the higher of two scores will be assigned. Problems, if appearing on quizzes and exams, must show computations to receive partial credit. If computations are not shown, no partial credit will be awarded. Attendance, Class Participation and Cell Phone Policy: Attendance: Because the course is available online, attendance is not mandatory. Students who are satisfied with their performance online are not required to attend classes. However, feedback from students taking this course was instrumental in its design. Most students can adequately learn the course content only if attending class on a regular basis. Since the course covers a variety of accounting concepts, attending class may prove very beneficial, as face-to-face instruction provides more illustration and explanation than the text. The instructor will monitor students’ progress and will encourage students who should attend class to do so. Class Participation: Students are encouraged to ask questions and participate in class discussion and may be called upon to answer questions in class. Classroom norm will be as follows: 1. Homework questions will be answered for only those students who have attempted the homework in Wiley and continue to have difficulty understanding. 2. Exercises will be reviewed in class. Hard copies of the exercises for each chapter will be available in class, as well as in Canvas. Similar to homework, these exercises will be graded on the amount of effort expended. For those students who will not be attending class regularly, the exercises in Canvas provide evidence of class participation. 3. Time permitting only – Lecture on important concepts discussed in the next chapter. Additionally, an in-class review of the chapters to be covered in Exams 1, 2 and 3 has been scheduled for the Thursdays prior to the due dates of each exam. The review for Exam 4 (final) has been scheduled for the Tuesday prior to the due date. Cell Phones and Other Electronic Devices: Cell phones and other electronic devices should be turned off when in class, unless an emergency situation is anticipated, such as a relative who may be in the hospital. In those instances, please put the phone on “vibrate” and leave the room to talk. Any other use of cell phones or other electronic devices in class will result in a 50 point penalty. Miscellaneous: 1. Technical Issues: You are expected to have some computer skills and be able to successfully navigate through Canvas and WileyPlus. This will be required in order to complete many of the assignments in this course. Should you have any technical difficulties with Canvas they can usually be resolved by going to the following site: http://www.wnc.edu/wnconline/ Click on the “Tutorials and Help” 2. Netiquette rules: Although not required, I highly encourage you to interact with both your fellow classmates and me throughout the semester. When using the discussion forum, emails or any other form of communication in this course, you are expected to treat your fellow classmates (and instructor) with the same respect and courtesy that you, yourself, would like to be treated. UNLAWFUL ACTS NRS 396.970: Surreptitious electronic surveillance on campus; exceptions. 1. Except as otherwise provided in subsection 2, it is unlawful for a person to engage in any kind of surreptitious electronic surveillance on a campus of the System without the knowledge of the person being observed. 2. Subsection 1 does not apply to any electronic surveillance: (a) Authorized by a court order issued to a public officer, based upon a showing of probable cause to believe that criminal activity is occurring on the property under surveillance; (b) By a law enforcement agency pursuant to a criminal investigation; (c) Which is necessary as part of a system of security used to protect and ensure the safety of persons on the campus; or (d) Of a class or laboratory when authorized by the teacher of the class or laboratory.
