Strike Three (1) In the early years of baseball, the umpires started a tradition that begun because of a player named William Hoy. (2) Hoy played in the major leagues in the early 1900s. During his four years of major league play, Hoy made over two thousand hits and stoled almost six hundred bases. (3) Hoy, a great outfielder, become the first player to have thrown three men out at home plate from the outfield—all in the same game. (4) William Hoy was a great player, but he could neither talk to other players nor hear the umpires’ calls. Earlier, he had lost his hearing. (5) When the umpires searched for a way to make the game easier for him, they begin to use hand signals. (6) They signaled strikes with the right hand and balls with the left hand. (8) The umpire throwed up his thumb to signal that the runner was out or spread his hands wide to mean the runner was safe. (9) The umpires’ calls have became the signals that are used in the game today. They helped William Hoy in the past, but they also will help other players in the future.
