NEW YORK (November 2001)- Christmas was celebrated a little early this year and Santa’s helpers appeared in the form of Andrea Bocelli, Mary J. Blige and Victoria’s Secret models Heidi Klum and Tyra Banks. The Victoria’s Secret Christmas Special was staged in a large tent erected in Bryant Park located in the heart of the fashion district in New York City. The event was taped on Tuesday, November 13th for national broadcast on the following Thursday. Sound Associates, of Yonkers, NY provided a Meyer Sound self-powered system that consisted of left and right M3D Line Array Loudspeakers and M3D-Sub Directional Subwoofers. Two CQ-1 Wide Coverage Main Loudspeakers were utilized for center-fill. Domonic Sack, Vice President at Sound Associates said, “As a supplier, we were very pleased to provide a state of the art system. Not only the speakers, but also everything from the consoles to the mic pres and the mics, were top notch. It looked great and sounded better.” Randy Hansen of Audible Difference Inc. who was responsible for the system design agreed. “The system performed brilliantly. I’ve never heard such controlled low end in my life.” The load in took place over a few days with no time related pressures. Since this was to be a prime time special, aesthetics were paramount. And the time allotted allowed for extra attention to be paid to detail during the install. Duncan Edwards of ADI Group and John Monitto of Meyer Sound aligned the system using SIM System II. Hansen recalls “The system was SIMed in two hours on Sunday morning, but as soon as we got the system on line it was pedal to the metal for rehearsals.” David Shapiro, also of ADI Group was the project manager and handled front of house duties. The stage featured multilevel performance areas with a Plexiglas runway. The draperies that surrounded the tent were embedded with Christmas lights. Bocelli performed with a 20-piece Orchestra that was positioned stage right 10 feet above the deck. Mary J. Blige’s band performed live off stage in another area and a mix was fed to FOH and monitors while Mary J. remained on the main stage with back-up singers. The finale featured a Gospel choir that was placed stage left and were accompanied by the orchestra as well as tracks. Sack was impressed with the ability of the system to handle the wide range of musical styles presented during the evening. “There was everything from orchestral strings and opera, to tracks and hip hop.” Hansen summed it all up by saying “There were a lot of special effects at this show, Victoria’s Secret models, angels being flown over the stage by Flying By Foy, and at the after party following the show, the buzz was about how good the show sounded.” ### ABOUT MEYER SOUND Meyer Sound Laboratories, Inc. designs and manufactures high quality sound reinforcement loudspeakers, studio monitors, equalizers and sound measurement tools for the professional audio industry.
