Technical Writing ENC 1210 Business Writing Portfolio Rachel Summers ENC 1210 Technical Writing Professor Jeanette Dick Florida Gateway College 24th April 2014 ENC 1210 Reflection This class has actually proven to be more resourceful than I thought it would be. I started out taking this class because I needed it for a prerequisite. I am glad that I was forced to take this class though because I have actually learned a lot. Writing has never really been something that I am good at and this class has definitely helped me improve my writing skills. The transition that you have to make into the professional world is quite drastic. They do not really warn you about it in high school that much. They just throw you out into the world and expect you to know everything when in reality you know close to nothing. Well right off the back in chapter 1 in the book Technical Communication Today it tells you how to communicate in the technical workplace. I’ve learned that writing in the workplace is definitely not the same as the papers that I had to write in High School. I have written a resume and cover letter before in high school for my Agriculture class as an assignment but of course that was a few years ago. I really enjoyed getting to tweak it and make changes on it based of the information that I now know from this class. All in all, I have actually enjoyed this class more than I thought I would. I started out dreading it because I have never been a good writer so it has caused me to not like it very much. Technical Writing is probably the one class that I will always be thankful that I took because it has turned out to be the most useful. I would like to discuss the possibility of going to work for you as an assistant. In the fall of 2014 (this year), I will be transferring to the Agricultural College of Life Sciences at the University of Florida. Eventually I want to go on to UF’s veterinarian program because my ultimate career goal is to become a large animal veterinarian. I have worked at my mother’s consignment store since I was 16. It has been a wonderful experience for me, and I have learned many useful traits that I can apply to life and the work field. Although I have enjoyed working here I would like more experience in the field that I am going into. I have always been involved with agriculture for as long as I can remember. I always helped my dad out when I was younger. He has done many jobs since I was younger, so I’ve learned many things from watching/helping him with tractors and other heavy machinery, farming, and his cattle. I was extremely involved in my schools FFA program when I was in high school. I was on many different teams and I showed animals in the fair whenever I could. As you can see I am very passionate about this and I know that I am more than qualified for this job if you will give me the chance. I would love the opportunity to work with you and your staff. I am willing to do whatever is needed and I am open to learning new things. I look forward to hearing from you. You can contact me through my cell phone (386-438-4976) or by emailing me at rachel.summers@wolves.fgc.edu . I appreciate your time. Sincerely, Rachel Summers ENC 1210 A Letter to the Public: Store Adjustments! I look forward to working with you all!! -Kevin Smith ENC 1210 Working in Teams The ability to work with others is definitely something that every person needs to do. Working in teams is different from individual work because your actions and commitment to whatever it is you are doing is no longer just about you, it is about your teammates as well. When working in groups I think it is necessary to get to know your group first, if you do not already; to know what kind of people you will be working with and what their expectations are. Individual work and group work communication is very important if you want to be successful. In my opinion the top strategies you and your group need to focus on are going over what the project is so everyone is on the same page, assigning team member responsibilities, writing out a plan of action, and learning how to manage and avoid conflict. When working in teams there is always going to be some sort of conflict, big or small, and you have to learn how to handle these conflicts effectively. There are some strategies that can be used to help avoid conflicts. Running effective meetings is one way to avoid conflict because when there is already tension and frustration in the group, unproductive meetings do not help. Mediating conflicts is another strategy. If it comes down to this there needs to be an unbiased mediator that can come to an agreement that all parties involved can accept. And finally if it comes down to it and a team member is not cooperating with the group or not being an active part of the team then sometimes the team just needs to ask the member to leave the group. When getting involved with virtual teaming there are important strategies that should be used for the outcome to be effective. You as a group need to develop a work ENC 1210 plan and stick to it. This is really important because you do not get to see the people in your group. Since you do not get to see your teammate’s communication regularly is extremely important. There are many ways to do this through emailing, phone calls, texting, etc. You need to build trust and respect for your virtual teammates even through you may not feel as much of a group with them because there is lack of physical contact. And last but not least keep regular hours. Everyone should be on the same schedule because time management is very important.
