ORSS – NPS Alumni Visit to the NTU Satellite Engineering Centre (SEC) on 29 May 2009 ORSS and the NPS (Naval Postgraduate School) Alumni of Singapore co-organized a visit to the NTU Satellite Engineering Centre (SEC) on 29 May 2009. The event was intended to provide members of both societies an introduction and overview of SEC’s flagship X-Sat micro-satellite project. A total of about 25 members from both societies attended this event. The event kicked off at 4.15pm on 29 May 09 with a presentation by the X-Sat Project Director, Dr Goh Cher Hiang, on the progress of the X-Sat project. The X-Sat microsatellite is a 120kg remote sensing micro-satellite using an electro-optical instrument with near real-time data downlink capability. It is the first micro-satellite designed and built totally within NTU and is also the first made in Singapore satellite. This project is undertaken by a joint team comprising staff from both NTU and DSO National Laboratories and involves participation from the various NTU Schools under the College of Engineering, as well as partners such as DSTA, CRISP (Centre for Remote Imaging, Sensing and Processing, NUS) and overseas collaborators such as the India Space Research Organization (ISRO), German Aerospace Centre (DLR), and South Korea’s SaTReCi. Presentation on X-Sat Project Status by Dr Goh Cher Hiang (X-Sat Project Director) After Dr Goh’s excellent presentation and a short Q&A session, the attendees were led to view a close-up display of the structural model of the X-Sat micro-satellite followed by a visit to the clean room facility for assembly and integration of satellite electronics (integration room). Senior technical staff from the SEC provided brief but informative explanations of the functions of both the structural model and integration room and answered numerous questions from the interested attendees. Brief on X-Sat Structure Model Brief on Clean Room Facility The event ended at 5.30pm after the attendees had the chance to mingle and chat with the SEC staff and amongst themselves over coffee, tea, and snacks.
