New Features in Windows 7
Some of the most prominent visual changes in windows 7 are the Task Bar, the Jump
List, the Aero Peek and Pinning Applications to the task bar. Where as some of the
major non-visual changes are the advanced calculator with enhanced options,
advanced hand writing option, improved media features, gadget gallery for adding new
gadgets, and a lot of new options in control panel. Let’s start with the changes in the
task bar and how to operate it.



Increasing parallel device initialization so several different parts of your
computer turn on at the same time during boot.
Loading fewer bytes per boot so the hard drive and system bus have less data
they need to work with.
Changing the way Windows components are initialized to make them start
faster.
On the Vista system, opening dozens of windows ate up a bulk of the memory,
eventually forcing the system to turn off high-performance features like Aero glass, just
to keep up. On the Windows 7 system, each window uses much less memory so those
of us who end up with ten IE windows, five Outlook e-mails, three Photoshop graphics,
and four IM chats open at the same time will not see a big slowdown. Battery
Life Windows 7 is also supposed to increase notebook battery life in several ways,
including:





Reducing background activities so the system processor can stay in an idle,
power-saving state for longer.
Adaptive brightness, which dims the screen and brightens the screen a bit
more intelligently.
Efficient DVD playback that uses fewer system resources.
A smart network power feature that turns off your Ethernet port when there’s
no cable plugged in.
Power Config, a new utility that detects energy-sucking problems and
recommends changes.

Improvements: If you glance at a system running the pre-beta Windows 7, you’d
probably think it was Vista at first glance. The major graphical elements of the desktop
and the windows themselves look pretty much identical to Vista. The start menu button,
the minimize/maximize/close buttons on windows, and the desktop icons all look the
same. The boot-up and shutdown processes have some different graphics and
Windows 7 logos in them, but if you blink you’ll miss them. So what’s different in the UI?
The taskbar and tray have undergone some significant tweaks, and window dragging
offers some neat conveniences. The Taskbar In the demo we were shown, but not in
the pre-beta Windows 7 install we received, the taskbar has the following new features:




The Aero glass color carries over to the taskbar for a snazzier look.
Icons can be rearranged so if you want your Microsoft Word window closest to
the start button, you can just drag it over there.
Great preview feature lets you see thumbnail previews of all open windows in a
given application as you hover over its taskbar icon (see screenshot below). We
also saw a demo of this with the previews enlarged so you can page through a
full-size version of all your open Word docs or sites in IE and quickly select the
one you want to display. This is a great feature for multitaskers who have tons of
windows open at once and lose track of them.
Jump lists help you open recent files or common tasks from either the taskbar or
from the Start menu without opening an application window. For example, you’ll
be able to right-click on the Word icon in the taskbar and see a list of recent
documents you can open. If app developers do nothing at all, the list of recent
apps will be available in the jump list. However, they can choose to expand the
functionality by putting other functions (e.g., create a new e-mail in Outlook) on
the list.

With Windows 7, you get a slider bar that lets you decide how aggressive UAC should
be. You can turn it off or set it to a level where Its less of a nag and more of a trusted
adviser. Peek: Show Desktop Made Convenient The Show Desktop feature, which
allows you to minimize all windows and quickly get an unobstructed view of your
desktop, has been around for several versions of Windows now, but Windows 7 adds a
new twist called “Peek.” To the right of system clock is a small, translucent square.
Hovering over it temporarily hides all your windows, while clicking on it minimizes
everything.

Easy “Snap-to” Window Sizing and Placement We can’t tell you how many times
we’ve wasted precious minutes trying to get two windows to line up next to each other
on the desktop so we can look at them side-by-side. One of our favorite features of
Windows 7 is its ability to easily make a window snap to half of the screen. Just start
dragging any window off the left or right side of the desktop and, when your cursor hits
that invisible wall at the end of the desktop, the window will resize to take up exactly
50% of the screen and snap itself to the side you dragged it to. When you drag a
window off the top of the screen, it maximizes, effectively “snapping” to the top of the
desktop. While this looks nice, it’s less interesting than the side anchoring, because it
has the same effect as hitting the maximize button, something that’s been around since
the dawn of Windows. Multi-Touch Features For tablets or touchscreen PCs, Windows
7 now supports a wide range of touch and multi-touch gestures, including:





Zooming in/out on an image by moving fingers closer together or further apart
Right-clicking by holding one finger on the target and tapping with another
Getting a jump menu by swiping upward
Clicking links, tabs, and scrolling in IE via touch
Drawing in Windows Paint with two fingers
Microsoft has also made some subtle UI tweaks to support touch. When you tap the
screen, a few things happen:




A water drop appears to show you where you’ve touched;
The cursor disappears until you move the mouse again (because you don’t need
a cursor when you’re using your fingers);
Menus you launch with touch are bigger so they’re easier to tap.
Windows 7 In-Depth Overview and Screenshots: More About Pow than Wow
Device Stages The autoplay feature has outlived its usefulness, because there are so
many different things you might want to do when you connect a new device. What if, for
example, you have a multi-function printer and you plug it into your computer? Will you
scan or fax or print or maybe put an SD Card in its memory card reader? Windows 7
introduces Device Stages, which allows hardware vendors to create control centers that
open when you attach their products. So when you attach that printer, you’ll see a
screen that gives you every option, from printing to reading the manual to ordering more
print cartridges. The screenshot below is for a phone.
Organization with Libraries A new feature called Libraries allows you to bring together
and search among photos, video, and audio. The goal is to simplify the process of
finding media that may be scattered in different folders on the hard drive. When we get
a chance to test this thoroughly, we’re going to evaluate just how effective it actually
keeping us organized and locating our photos, but the demos we saw looked very
promising. Easier Home Networking Another new feature, Home Group, promises to
make setting up a home network—complete with printer and file sharing—seamless
and easy. It also accommodates mobile workers who have a laptop that shuttles
between the office and the house. When you take your corporate laptop from the
boardroom to the living room, your default printer changes with you. Media Player
ImprovementsThe Windows Media Player has some nice tweaks as well, including:



Enhanced file compatibility that lets you play all kinds of media files, including
H.264 and MPEG-4, without downloading additional codecs or plug-ins.
A lightweight playback mode that takes up much less desktop real estate. This
is a welcome change for those of us who continue to use apps like Winamp for
music, because it offers such a small window.
A play-to feature that lets you send music or video sound to an external device
such as a wireless media receiver.

Enhance mobility and manageability with DirectAccess

Working outside the office is easier than ever. DirectAccess in Windows 7
and Windows Server 2008 R2 enhances the productivity of mobile workers by
connecting them seamlessly and more securely to their corporate network any time
they have Internet access—without the need to VPN. When your IT department
enables DirectAccess, the corporate network’s file shares, intranet websites, and
line-of-business applications remain accessible wherever you have an Internet
connection.

Manage remote machines more effectively. Flexibility gives IT the opportunity
to service remote machines on a regular basis and ensure that mobile users stay up
to date with company policies. With DirectAccess, IT administrators can manage
mobile computers by updating Group Policy settings and distributing software
updates any time the mobile computer has Internet connectivity, even if the user is
not logged on.
Enhance security and access control. To keep data safer as it travels public
networks, DirectAccess uses IPv6-over-IPsec to encrypt communications
transmitted across the Internet. DirectAccess is designed to reduce unnecessary

traffic on the corporate network by sending only traffic destined for the corporate
network through the DirectAccess server (running Windows Server 2008 R2), or the
administrator can choose to send all traffic through the corporate network. In
addition to authenticating the computer, DirectAccess can also authenticate the user
and supports multifactor authentication, such as a smart card. IT administrators can
configure which intranet resources specific users can access using DirectAccess.
Improve application responsiveness with BranchCache

Increase branch office user productivity. BranchCache in Windows 7 helps
increase the network responsiveness of applications, giving users in remote offices
an experience more like working in the head office. When accessing content stored
on Windows Server 2008 R2, users in a branch office don't need to wait as long to
download files from headquarters. When IT enables BranchCache, a copy of data
accessed from an intranet website or a file server is cached locally within the branch
office. When another user on the same network requests the file, the user gets

Guide to Training, Teaching and Learning Materials Development


access to the content almost immediately as it is downloaded from the local cache
rather than over a limited bandwidth connection back to headquarters.
Flexible architecture. BranchCache only serves content to users who have the
right permissions and always checks to make sure it is delivering the latest version
of the file. BranchCache can operate in one of two modes. In Hosted Cache mode,
a server in the branch running Windows Server 2008 R2 hosts the cached files. In
the second mode, Distributed Cache, a branch server is not required; copies of files
are directly cached on PCs in the branch and sent to other Windows 7 clients as
needed.
Versatile and efficient protocols. BranchCache only retrieves data from
headquarters when the user requests it. Because it is a passive cache, it decreases
bandwidth utilization between headquarters and the branch. BranchCache only
caches read requests, so it will never interfere with a user saving a file.
BranchCache supports common protocols for web content (HTTP and HTTPS) and
file servers (server messaging block [SMB]), enabling it to work with a wide variety
of application types. Finally, it works seamlessly with network security technologies,
including Secure Sockets Layer (SSL), SMB signing, and Internet Protocol security
(IPsec) to improve application performance even if the content is encrypted.
Help users find what they need with Federated Search


Search enhancements in Windows 7 make finding information
easier.Enterprise users need to access data from a variety of sources in their daily
tasks. With Windows Vista, Microsoft introduced advanced desktop search
technology, enabling users to instantly find information on their computers. With
Microsoft Office SharePoint Server 2007 and the Enterprise Search family of
products, Microsoft delivered highly secure, manageable, server-based search.
Windows 7 brings these experiences together and provides users with an improved
and seamless search experience across local and networked corporate data directly
within Windows Explorer and the Start menu.
More intuitive ways to find and organize information. Advancements to the
Windows 7 user interface (UI) make it easier for users to quickly find what they are
looking for. Libraries are a new way of accessing documents that might be located
in different folders, on different hard drives, or even on different computers that are
backed by a Windows Search index—in a single view. Windows 7 creates several

default libraries for items such as documents and pictures, allowing you to organize
and browse files in an optimal way. You can also create custom libraries. For
example, libraries can be created per project to provide one entry point under which
you can organize, access, and search files spread across multiple locations.
Searching beyond the local computer with federated search. Windows 7
enables users to search remote document repositories, SharePoint sites, and Web
applications as easily as they search their desktops—through the familiar Windows
interface. Windows 7 federated search uses an existing public standard called
OpenSearch. Users can select which sites they want to search from, or IT can
populate a list for the user. Federated search results are presented in Windows
explorer much like local files, with rich views, file details, and previews.

Flexible search scopes. Making it easy to discover and search intranet sites
can help organizations maximize their return on these investments. With Enterprise
Search Scopes in Windows 7, IT administrators can populate links on the Start
menu and in the Windows Explorer search results. These links simplify access to
the most appropriate, complete, authoritative data sources on the network. This
setup makes content on intranet portals more discoverable and accessible. IT
administrators can deploy Enterprise Search scopes on users' machines using
Group Policy.

Windows Management to Improve IT
Productivity
Does your IT department need to manage large numbers of client computers effectively,
make the most of available IT staff, and minimize support and training costs? The
Windows 7 operating system helps your organization deliver all these services and
more. The management technologies of Windows 7 enable powerful automation,
troubleshooting, and configuration features—features that help IT professionals become
more productive.



Reduce costs with enhanced automation. Windows 7 enables IT
professionals to easily automate repetitive and complex tasks using
Windows PowerShell 2.0, a powerful and complete scripting language built
into the operating system. For greater efficiency, the remoting features
available with PowerShell 2.0 enable IT pros to execute a script across the
network on multiple computers at once.
Keep users productive and decrease support calls. Windows 7 provides the
Windows Troubleshooting Platform, a comprehensive, extensible tool that
helps users to quickly resolve technical issues without involving the help
desk—and helps support staff fix any escalated issues quickly. Windows 7
provides the ability to develop custom Troubleshooting Packs for
organization- or infrastructure-specific issues. For example, an IT pro can
develop a Troubleshooting Pack to support a custom line-of-business
application.
Enable more flexible configuration across the organization. Windows 7
improves the ability to centrally manage the most critical aspects of
computers by providing additional Group Policy settings focused on data
protection and improved auditing. Through AppLocker, Windows 7 provides
the ability to limit which applications users can run. To increase the reach
and flexibility of Group Policy, Windows 7 delivers built-in support for Group
Policy Preferences, which extend the range of what Group Policy can
manage and how Group Policy applies settings to specific users or
machines.


Better management of remote computers. DirectAccess simplifies IT
management by providing an "always managed" infrastructure, in which
computers both on and off the network can always be healthy, managed,
and updated to help prevent small issues from becoming major problems.
DirectAccess is an innovative networking technology in Windows 7 and
Windows Server 2008 that enables remote users to seamlessly access the
corporate network anytime they have an Internet connection. For IT
professionals, DirectAccess provides a more secure and flexible corporate
network infrastructure that enables them to remotely manage and update
user PCs whenever those systems are connected to the Internet, even when
users are not logged in.
COMPATIBILITY
Adopting a new operating system in an enterprise environment is never a simple
undertaking, but the Windows 7 operating system was designed to ease application
compatibility as much as possible. Assessing the compatibility of your applications
depends largely on what operating system your enterprise is currently running.


Windows Vista customers: For customers on Windows Vista moving to
Windows 7, the effort required to test and validate applications will be
substantially reduced compared to moving from Windows XP to Windows 7.
The majority of applications that already work on Windows Vista will
continue to work on Windows 7 with little or no issues due to the underlying
similarity of the two operating systems and efforts by Microsoft and its
partners to provide compatibility. For example, application updates created
for Windows Vista can be applied to Windows 7 as well.
Windows XP and Windows 2000 customers: Microsoft recommends that
these customers work closely with their Microsoft sales representatives to
help them get ready for Windows 7, as there are additional steps that need
to be taken to mitigate application compatibility if your organization decides
to skip Windows Vista. Ease planning with innovative tools
The majority of applications that already work on Windows Vista will continue to work on

step, your IT department can begin using the following tools to assess the compatibility
of applications with Windows 7.


Microsoft Application Compatibility Toolkit (ACT): ACT enables software
developers, independent software vendors (ISVs), and IT professionals who
work in a corporate environment to inventory their applications, determine
whether their applications are compatible with a new version of the Windows
operating system, and apply compatibility fixes to incompatible applications.
Windows Vista Application List: To evaluate your environment's application
readiness for 32-bit and 64-bit Windows Vista, browse this list of over 8,000
applications with Windows Vista compatibility status.
Minimize application compatibility using virtualization tools
In some cases, key business applications are not yet compatible or supported on
Windows 7. If you cannot get a version of the application to run natively on Windows 7
or mitigation is deemed too costly or time-intensive, there are new desktop virtualization
tools to allow you to transition from older versions of Windows to Windows 7.
Windows 7 enables users to seamlessly run a virtual Windows XP environment through
Windows Virtual PC. Older applications can operate in their supported operating
system, removing the barriers to OS upgrade. Microsoft Enterprise Desktop
Virtualization (MED-V), a core component of Microsoft Desktop Optimization Pack for
Software Assurance (MDOP), adds the capabilities required for IT-managed
deployments of virtual PCs, including virtual image delivery, policy-based provisioning,
and centralized management and monitoring.
Ease deployment with Windows 7
There are several enhancements to the overall imaging, deployment, and migration
experience in Windows 7. New tools enable organizations to easily create and manage
single, globally-supported system images, quickly deliver those images in network20

based deployments, and rapidly migrate user files and settings from the previously
operating system into Windows 7. Automated solutions enable direct migration from
Windows XP or Windows Vista to Windows 7 while retaining and migrating user data on
the same computer. The entire process—data migration, operating system installation,
driver and application specialization, domain configuration, and more—is supported by
task integration tools like the Microsoft Deployment Toolkit and System Center
Configuration Manager 2007. Also before you deploy, use the Microsoft Assessment
and Planning Toolkit to assess hardware and device compatibility of your existing client
computers.

There is no supported migration path from Windows 2000 to Windows 7 using the
Windows User State Migration Tool (USMT). You will need to upgrade to Windows XP
and then migrate to Windows 7 using USMT 4.0, a tool included with the Windows
Automated Installation Kit (AIK). For more information on Windows 2000 and Windows
2000 Server End of Support visit Windows 2000 End of Support Solution Center.
Updating your Windows XP, Windows Vista and Windows 2000 PCs before the end of
mainstream support dates will ensure your PCs stay supported and receive security
updates. The best way to be secure and supported is by migrating to Windows 7.
 Small and midsize businesses should migrate to Windows 7 Professional,

done, and safeguard your work.
Larger organizations should migrate to Windows 7 Enterprise, which
enables enterprise users to be more productive from anywhere, manage risk
through enhanced security and control, and reduce costs through
streamlined PC management.
There are tools to help test and mitigate application compatibility issues,
including the Microsoft Application Compatibility Toolkit, Windows XP Mode,
and Microsoft Enterprise Desktop Virtualization (MED-V) to help migration.
To learn more about these tools, visit the Springboard Series on TechNet.
Upgrading to Internet Explorer 8 improves the level of protection against

We don’t’ have to worry about
any
file
formatting
or
partitioning on a clean drive
and Windows will handle
everything.
Windows will also begin copying
the files to begin the installation,
it is very important to know that
when you do install Windows 7
under a clean install scenario,
you are losing all the files that
may have existed either on the
Windows XP or on Windows
Vista. Furthermore, in order to
boot from the Windows 7 DVD
Media, you will need to change
the option on your BIOS to boot
from DVD or you only need to hit
F12 while booting your computer
in order to access the boot menu
to boot from CD or DVD
removable device

Then Windows already finish
copying a files over to the drive
and now expanding those files.
Those files are actually
compressed into .CAB file and
now they are being expanded so
that the installation can take
place. This process can take 20
minutes to 1 hr depending on
the hardware you are using.
In this session the installation
proceeds though the series of
screen shots which involves a
reboot. No user interaction is
required for this Part. Please
note that after these steps takes
place, windows will need to
restart the computer to continue
but you need to make sure that
windows doesn’t boot from the
DVD-media again, so what we
do right now while restarting is
to pull DVD media out by
ejecting the DVD.
