Welcome!
Congratulations on trying a new and innovative way of learning! Unlike a traditional class, this
course will not take place in a classroom. All of the instruction will delivered through browserbased tutorials over the internet. As a student, you will have the flexibility and control to decide
when and where your learning takes place. In doing this, however, you will not be isolated from
your instructor or your fellow classmates. Through the use of e-mail you will have the
opportunity to communicate, ask questions, or get help if needed.
The purpose of this manual is to improve your online experience. The most important thing to
remember is to be involved!
The greater your participation and interaction, the stronger and more meaningful your learning.
Prospective Students
If you are a prospective student who is considering whether to enroll in this course, you might
find the information given in this manual to be helpful in making your decision.
Be aware that a distance learning environment is not suited for everyone! To be successful in
online classes requires a certain amount of self-discipline, independence, motivation, and time
management. Students who tend to procrastinate and complete assignments at the last minute
will not do very well, and are advised not to enroll without consulting your advisor.
Enrolled Students
Taking classes online requires self-motivation and good organization and planning skills. Not
having to be in class at a specific time can sometimes make it easy to forget that setting aside the
same amount of time you would ordinarily dedicate to a traditional class on campus is just as
essential for the online class.
Using the Course Calendar and purchasing a planner, or setting an alarm on your computer, cell
phone, or clock can remind you to log in.
Also, knowing the layout of the online course can help save you the time of exploring links and
enable you to dive right into learning. For this reason, this guidebook provides detailed
instructions about how to move around your online classroom in addition to an assortment of
other important and helpful tips. It is your map toward online success! Read it thoroughly and be
sure to let us know if you have any questions.

Orientation to Online Learning at Lackawanna College
Getting into your classroom is the first step in beginning your online class. Be sure you have all
of your materials ready and off you go!
First, you must access your online class through the portal. The portal can be located at
https://portal.lackawanna.edu/ics/default.aspx? or click Home Page | Portal on campus. Add this
to your favorites so that you will not have to return to this page to retrieve it.
You must enter your Student ID and Password to log in.
Contact Tech Support if you are having technical difficulties accessing the portal or if you are
unsure of your Student ID or Password. The contact information is as follows:

Also, please make sure that the information you provided during registration is current. This
includes your mailing address, your phone number, and most importantly, a current e-mail
address. YOU MUST USE THE FALCONS EMAIL address given to you at registration.

Once you log in, you will see My Courses on the middle left of your screen under Quick Links.
Click on this to view your online courses.
Click on the link for the course you wish to enter and you are ready to get started! Your course
navigation menu is on the left. It begins with a link for Attendance and ends with a link for your
Syllabus.
The Main page, which loads automatically upon your log in, contains About This Course,
Calendar, Announcements, Handouts and Bookmarks. This is everything you need to work
successfully.





About this course will provide you with a general welcome.
Calendar will list your due dates.
Announcements will provide reminders or special information from your instructor.
Handouts will offer the tools necessary to complete assignments.
Bookmarks provide additional resources to enhance your understanding of the course
material.

Collaboration is where you will find your Discussion Questions. This is an important way to
interact with your classmates and instructor during the class. Under the Collaboration link you
will see Forums, Coursemates and Chat. Forums are threaded discussions. These are
asynchronous, which means that they are not live in real time and that you can post at your
leisure. However, your instructor will set a due date by which time you must respond to any
posted questions or reply to posts made by your peers.
Coursemates allows you to view the other students in your class. Here you will find email
addresses for everyone – including the instructor.
Chat is a synchronous activity. This works just like an IM or Twitter. Here you can converse
with classmates or the instructor in real time.

The next link in the menu is Course Information. Here you will see your course name and
number, the term, the faculty information and a course description.
Next, you will find Coursework. This is an important link since it will list all discussions,
assignments, quizzes and papers along with their due dates. It is also where you can find
information about how and where to hand the work in. Below is a sample Coursework page.
Also, take note of Gradebook, which is the next link down. This is where you will find grades
and brief instructor comments for whatever you have turned in.

The Syllabus is the last link in your navigating menu, but it may be the most important! The
Syllabus is your map for the course. It contains all information necessary to meet the course
requirements with ease, including the titles of your text books. Open it to view your instructor’s
expectations, grading, assignments, due dates and more. You will also find due dates marked on
the Calendar. Below is a sample Syllabus page. You will see on the left menu that there is also a
Downloadable Version and a link for Readings.

An Overview of Student Tools on the Portal
Once in your course, you will notice a menu to the left that includes the following:
Attendance: Your attendance is crucial for your success. Be sure to post no less than six replies
per week for discussion questions. This should be spread across at least three days rather than all
at once on one or two days.
Collaboration: Weekly discussions are held here.
Course Information: This is where you can find the course name and description, the term and
the instructor name.
Coursework: Weekly assignments and directions can be found here.
Gradebook: This feature keeps track of your grades.

Q: How can I get my password for Lackawanna College’s Portal?
A: Go to http://portal.lackawanna.edu/ and click on Login Assistance. From there, you will be
able to send an e-mail to your personal e-mail address if you provided us with one. If you did not
provide us with a personal e-mail address, click on Help on the main tab, or send an E-mail to
support@lackawanna.edu

Q: How can I get my Grades and/or Student Schedule?
A: First, see question one to get your portal password. Then, after you sign in, click on the
Academics tab. If there is an “Access Suspended” message at the top of the page, then you will
need to call the tech support phone number before you can see the Academics tab.
Q: What is my falcons e-mail username?
A: Your falcons username is your first name, a period, and then your last name, John.Smith, for
example. Your full e-mail address is John.Smith@falcons.lackawanna.edu
Q: How do I get my e-mail password?
A: Your e-mail password is initially the same as your portal password. When you receive your
password for the portal, then log on to your e-mail and change your password there as well. The
passwords are not linked – changing one will not change the other. If you need assistance with
your falcons account, send an e-mail to support@lackawanna.edu.
Q: Where can I print out something for my classes?
A: You may print in the labs, 208 or 210, if there are no classes. You can also print in the
Library located at the ground floor of Seeley Hall.
Q: I have Microsoft Works / Microsoft Office 2007 on my home computer/laptop. Will my
files work in the labs?
A: Only in the right file format. When saving your document, make sure you save the document
as a .rtf (Rich Text File) or .txt (Text Document). These are universally compatible with most
word processors, including all of those on campus.
Q: My USB drive is not working in the labs. How do I fix it?
A: You cannot have a USB Device that attempts to install something, or runs software to prompt
for a password. These drives install applications that block you from using files in a regular
manner. Uninstall the software on the device and use it as a plain USB and you will be ok.
Q: What are the hours that the computer labs in the main building are open?
A: You may use the labs when they are open and class is not in session. Check the sign on the
computer lab door for class times.
Q: Who should I contact if the internet in my dorm isn’t working?
A: Contact David Van Buskirk 570.504.1585 or Patrick Gallagher 570.961.7822.
Q: Are there wireless networks on campus that are supported by Lackawanna College?

A: There is a wireless network in the Student Union Center. There are no wireless networks in
the dormitories.
Q: Can I use my gaming console online in the dorms?
A: No. Due to security and bandwidth reasons, we cannot allow gaming devices to connect to the
internet. You can play over the LAN with other people from your dorm.
How do I submit an attachment or email my instructor?
Submitting an attachment and e-mailing the instructor must both be done from your home or
falcons e-mail addresses. Be sure to get your instructor’s e-mail from the syllabus and manually
compose an e-mail. There is no way to submit an attachment through the portal from student to
faculty. *Keep in mind that your professor will post a Questions thread where you should ask
any questions that are not personal. This way, the whole class can benefit from the answer.
How can I participate in discussions?
You can participate in the discussions through the Collaboration page under each course home
page. Just go to the My Courses link, click on the course, then Collaboration, and then click on
“Open Discussion” and that will take you to the discussion threads that your professor has
posted. Click Reply to add your bright ideas to the mix!
How do I see who my classmates are?
You may see your classmates by clicking on Collaboration and then clicking on Coursemates.
You can see and e-mail your fellow students or professor through this link. However, keep in
mind that it is easier to use your personal or falcons email so that the recipient sees your unique
address rather than the generic from: portal@lackwanna.edu

A syllabus is a map of your course. It is an essential document because it provides you with
important resource information, as well as your instructor’s expectations. All Lackawanna

What You Can Expect from Faculty
An important ingredient in online success is an instructor who makes their presence known and
who is eager to provide the help that you need in order to be productive. To that end,
Lackawanna College online instructors pledge to:







Provide a syllabus to assist you in understanding expectations and in managing time
Post tips, due dates, rubrics, handouts or whatever type of supplemental material they
deem necessary for your success
Provide opportunities for collaboration through discussion – and join in to ensure that
your thinking is right on track
Provide weekly previews and summaries to help you to focus on the crucial components
of each lesson
Respond to questions within 24 hours
Return assignments within one week (7 days) with helpful feedback
Hold virtual office hours through Chat for at least one hour at some time during the week
Course Evaluation
For the final week of your class, you will have an opportunity to evaluate your class through a
mandatory reflection. Lackawanna College strives to ensure that your learning is meaningful;
therefore, your feedback is thoughtfully considered as changes are continually made to enhance
your experience.
As you move through the semester, think about how the course is improving your knowledge,
skills, and abilities – and how you will use what you have learned in future classes or in the
workplace. Reflect on what tools or explanations could have helped you to perform better.
Consider whether you feel confident in the subject matter, or if there is course material that

seems confusing or disconnected. And determine if you are meeting the course objectives set
forth in the syllabus.
We are eager to hear your opinions, so be sure to share in detail and with honesty.
What Faculty Will Expect of You
Discussion Requirements
The online classroom is just like your traditional classroom in many ways. And this includes
engaging in discussion!
Discussion greatly enhances your learning experience because it enables you to examine
multiple, diverse perspectives by which to compare your own; it gives you an opportunity to ask
questions and clarify your understanding of a topic; and it supplements your weekly learning and
assignments to strengthen your new knowledge. Plus, your confidence builds when classmates
react positively to your great ideas!
In order to benefit best from discussions, there must be consistent interaction. Therefore, you are
required to post at least 4 times on at least 3 different days for all threaded discussions, for a
total of 12 posts per week.
Please use these helpful hints for formulating your discussion posts. Also, review the discussion
question rubric in this guide to learn how to gain points by creating comments with substantive
content.

Let's say you have two discussion questions per week. Your initial reply to each question will
fulfill two out of the 12 post requirements.
Then, to meet 10 more post requirements, read each of your classmates’ responses to the weekly
discussion question(s) and be sure to do one or more of the following. You may want to print out
this checklist to guide you.

Modeling Mechanics
Good writing skills are critical to your success both academically and professionally. Upon
graduating from Lackawanna College, those who possess excellent written communication skills
will undoubtedly have the upper hand in most professional work environments. Therefore,
practice these skills by ensuring that your posts, whether they are feedback, reminders, or
answers to questions, do not have any grammatical, spelling, or punctuation errors.
First Steps
To begin, access your Syllabus to get a jump-start on what is required for your course(s). Also,
you will need to send an e-mail to the instructor to confirm that you have carefully reviewed and
printed the Syllabus. There will be a week one syllabus quiz; so please be sure to ask if there is a
portion of this document that is unclear to you.
Second, go to your Collaboration link to introduce yourself to the class. Your instructor will
have set up a thread for you to reply with a short autobiography so that everyone can get to know
one another. Some examples for sharing might include where you live, what you do for work,
your career goals, family life, hobbies, interests, etc.

Tips for Success Online!
Below you will find some general information that will help you to succeed in your online
learning classroom. This handy checklist is a quick way to ensure that you are on track.
Semester Calendar
The traditional classroom semester is fifteen weeks in length, and the online courses follow this
schedule as well. To view the complete academic calendar, please visit the Lackawanna College

Text Book Ordering Instructions
During the course of the program, you will be required to purchase textbooks. You can do this
online through the Lackawanna College Bookstore:

Attachments
Many of your instructors will require you to upload your assignments as attachments to an email.
Here are some things to keep in mind when posting attachments.
 After you attach your assignment, double check that you can open and read it before you
send the email.
 If you worked on the assignment in multiple drafts, make sure the correct draft is
attached.
 Make sure that you have attached the assignment to the correct instructor and to the
correct email address.
Some Things to Remember:
A wonderful benefit of online learning is its flexibility. After all, you can work on your classes in
your pajamas! But online learning takes much motivation and discipline because it is highly
independent. To help ensure your success:
 Log-on to your course daily.
 Check your e-mail daily.
 Keep in touch with your instructor and classmates.
 Pay attention to the requirements of each course by using the syllabus and calendar.
 Contact your instructor if you need help with an assignment.
 Contact the Portal manager if you are having technological issues.

mandatory and it will help make your learning more meaningful and memorable.

Netiquette
Online learning can make us feel confident in speaking out and sharing our ideas because it
provides a certain sense of anonymity. But just as there are rules for polite communication in
person, so are there rules for online communication that is respectful and effective. This is called
netiquette!
1. Don’t be a novelist – messages should be concise and to the point.
2. Salutations – address the person in email like you normally would in person. In Message
Board Forums, salutations are not usually necessary.
3. Signatures – keep it simple. For email signatures, do include your contact information in
the signature.
4. Do not use all upper case – this is considered yelling or shouting.
5. Be patient – email was not designed for immediacy, but rather for convenience.
6. Always include a subject line in your email message – and make it descriptive.
7. Use correct grammar and spelling. Spelling isn’t always easy and typos and basic spelling
mistakes will occur, but it distract readers from the brilliant ideas in the content of your
work – like watching a sunrise through a dirty window!
8. Avoid public “flames.” Flaming is a form of verbal abuse when you intentionally attack
or disrespect somebody for whatever reason. Maybe you didn’t agree with something
they said, but there’s a nice way to share a different point of view without name calling or
attacking someone; and you can be penalized for swearing.
9. Don’t Spam. This is an on-line course so let’s keep it educational, and always remember
that there is no such thing as a secure email system.
10. Be honest! Faking website statistics, pretending to be someone else, or trying to cheat
people online will not only hurt your reputation, but will cause you a lot of trouble.

Rubrics
Each week, please be sure to view the course Calendar as a reminder of when Assignments and
Discussions are due. If you have questions about how to complete an assignment please don’t
hesitate to ask for help! In the meantime, let rubrics be your guide.
A rubric is a scoring tool that tells you what the teacher expects on each assignment. It also
highlights the most important elements of learning – in other words – what is important about a
topic. For example, a writing rubric might judge your work on organization, spelling and use of
references. But a math rubric might judge your work on the calculation process and the accuracy
of the final answer.
Sometimes a very detailed rubric will describe the level of quality for each objective. For
instance, a score of 1 under the heading Mechanics on a writing rubric might mean that you have
many spelling and grammar errors while a score of 4 might mean that your writing is clear and
well edited.
The rubrics help you to focus and to succeed. They tell you exactly what you need to do and they
tell you exactly how many points each thing is worth. Use the rubrics to guide you as you work
and it is possible to get 100% on everything you hand in!
Here is your rubric for class participation. Participation differs from discussions but is still a very
important component of learning. The participation rubric lets you know exactly what is
expected of you in your online courses.

Plagiarism
Plagiarism is the act or mistake of directly copying or rewording someone else’s ideas and
presenting them as your own.
Plagiarism is sometimes difficult to understand, but is the most serious mistake a writer can
make. This is because the world needs new ideas in order to improve. For example, imagine if
the person who invented today’s radial tires continued to copy the wheel’s first version ever. Can
you picture our cars rolling along on rough edged boulders?!
Without new ideas, we do not progress. Your ideas are brilliant because they are new – and even
when they need tweaking they are still better than regurgitating ideas that have already been
thought up, because new ideas inspire more new ideas and enable us to move ahead.
Have faith in your own unique, amazing thoughts. Embrace your own quirky style and learn to
improve on it by making mistakes. Copying from someone else cheats you out of learning a skill
that you will find useful no matter what your major, job, or hobbies. Plus, when you copy
someone else’s ideas, you are essentially admitting that your own are not good enough. And we
know that is not true!
So let your confidence shine – and happy writing!
Don’t
Don’t visit paper mills and copy or purchase ready made writing from the internet. I will catch
you – easily.
Don’t misrepresent the work of others as your own. This includes the work of your friends or
relatives – even if they did Ok your use of it.
Don’t create fake sources or interviews.
Don’t change a few words around and think that you have not plagiarized. A citation is needed!
Don’t use someone else’s language without quotation marks and a citation.
Don’t forget to cite images or photos.
Don’t turn in a paper that you’ve written for another class.
Don’t spend so much time figuring out ways to cheat that it would have saved you time to simply
follow these DO’s:

Do talk to me if you are confused or overwhelmed. I don’t bite!
Do ask your classmates for advice.
Do swap papers and help each other edit.
Do expect to make mistakes but do hand in your paper anyway.
Do expect how to learn to correct and avoid your mistakes in future papers.

Do expect to get good grades if you take your time, participate in class, and put your heart into
your work.
Do know that writing can be fun.
Do know that your ideas are brilliant and you do not need to copy someone else’s.
Do be organized when taking notes from your sources so as not to mix up what came from
where.
Do properly cite all things that you used to find information including: websites, interviews,
CD’s, and speeches.
Do use your style manual to look up proper citations.
Do choose a topic that you are passionate about so that you always have lot to say.
The following is the Academic Integrity Policy taken word for word from your Student
Handbook to provide you with Lackawanna College’s specific code on plagiarism.
Academic dishonesty in any form, such as plagiarism and cheating, will not be tolerated.
Sanctions will include an automatic F for plagiarism, but the severity or frequency of the
violation may result in dismissal from the College as well.
The following are among the forms of dishonesty for which sanctions may be applied:
 Using books, notes or other materials during an examination, unless expressly permitted;
 Using purchased essays, term papers or preparatory research for such papers;
 Copying others' work or engaging in unauthorized cooperation during an assignment or
examination;
 Allowing another student to copy from an examination or other assignment intended to
be performed independently;
 Borrowing from published works, whether material is taken verbatim or with minor

Lackawanna College offers many resources to ensure your success both in the traditional
classroom and online. Smarthinking is a free online tutoring service directed by Mr. Donald
Korinda. Tutoring is available in math, biology, writing, accounting, chemistry, biology,
economics, effective speaking, literature, statistics, physics, and more. The service is available
seven days a week, most days from 9 a.m. to 2 a.m. You can request a live tutoring session,

Seeley Memorial Library Online Databases and Remote Access Information
The following three pages contain information about online databases. Databases are a gem,
because they are subscription items that libraries purchase. This means that the articles found
within them are often not available simply by searching the World Wide Web.
Also, databases offer peer reviewed items, which means that each source has been verified as a
valid and reputable reference. And even more exciting, the databases are all “full text,” which
means no trips to the library! When an article is located, full text enables you to retrieve and
print the whole article – not just the abstract.
There is so much useful information to find in the databases that searching can become time
consuming and frustrating; but devising good search terms is the key to success! Be sure to
contact the library staff via telephone or email if you are having difficulty finding the topic of
your research.

PA Power Library – Online Databases
PA Power Library is a set of databases that are provided by the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania,
and free to anyone in PA with a public library card. EBSCOhost is a popular database and
included in PA Power Library that you may recognize. The PA Power Library’s red, white and
yellow icon is the same on any public library website, which enables you to locate it in a snap.
The following are the general steps to log into the databases, based on the Lackawanna County
Library System’s website.
To Access PA Power Library

Access the Internet and type www.albright.org (or the web address of the library from
which you have a card).

Scroll down. On the left hand side of the screen is a red, white and yellow square icon
labeled Access PA Power Library. Click on the icon.

Enter your Lackawanna County Library System barcode number (The 14 digit number
located on the back of your library card.).

The webpage “Welcome to the POWER Library” should be open. It’s organized by
subjects and lists the names of all the databases available.

If you want to find magazine and newspaper articles, go to the General Reference box
and click EBSCOhost (on the right hand side of the screen).

Click EBSCOhost web.

Choose your databases.

Click Continue.

Check the box for Full Text.

Enter your search terms and review your results. If you are not finding what you need, try
other search words, and consider calling the staff at Seeley Memorial Library for
assistance.

APA and MLA Style Guides
Finding useful sources to support your good thinking is important; but equally crucial is properly
referencing these sources in order to avoid plagiarism, identify the research you have done for
your audience, and locate them again when needed. The Publication Manual of the American
Psychological Association, commonly referred to as APA, is the style guide for the social and
behavioral science subjects.
The MLA Handbook, published by the Modern Language Association and commonly referred to
as MLA, is the style guide for the humanities subject areas.
Although there are other style guides in use, Lackawanna College uses one or the other of these,
depending on the subject of a particular class.
In general, style guides are the rules for formatting a written paper and including any items used
for references in the paper. The style guide provides the exact rules for spacing, punctuation,
information organization, margins, referencing, and more. The rules given are very precise and
must be followed exactly. It is required to apply these rules to written assignments at the college
level, but aside from purchasing the books themselves, you can also use some of the many
available formatting websites to assist you.
The following pages provide some citation examples and basic rules for preparing a paper. Keep
in mind these are just examples. If the source you are using doesn’t exactly fit the examples
given, use of a DVD for example, research of how to cite that material will be needed. Allow
enough time for preparing the list of references – an incorrect use of style guide rules can ruin an
otherwise perfectly good research paper.

If there is more than one author, start with the author that is first listed in the text. Then
add the other author’s name(s) using an ampersand instead of the word “and.” Ex:

Obtaining Print Materials from Seeley Memorial Library
Requesting Materials
The library catalog is located on the library website and can be searched for materials to be sent
to your address off campus.
To request any materials from the Seeley Memorial Library, please place your request using the
“Request Materials” widget on the library website.
Materials will be mailed to you, so please include a valid mailing address. A padded envelope
will be included, with postage attached, for the return of the materials.
The items will be checked out to you, and it will be your responsibility to return them. If items
are not returned before the end of the current semester, a hold will be placed on your account.

Keep in mind that eBooks.will show up in the catalog as “no copies” available and can only be
viewed and printed by actually visiting the Scranton campus.
Requesting Scanned Documents
To request any article from any the Seeley Memorial Library periodicals collection, please send
an email to library@lackawanna.edu. Provide all details of the location of the article including
the name of the periodical, the date, and the page numbers.
The article will be scanned to the email address you provide and arrive as a PDF file.
