1 ART 1065 – RENAISSANCE ART College of Southern Maryland, Waldorf Campus FALL 2009 Tuesdays 10:00 am - 12:40 pm 3 Credits Instructor: J. Ivie phone: 301-848-1990 - NO TEXTING SERVICE email: jivie@csmd.edu Class web page: http://www.thegrossnationalproduct.com/CSMART1065/fall09.htm Required course text: Hartt, Frederick and David G. Wilkins. History of Italian Renaissance Art. Sixth Edition, New York: Pearson/Prentice Hall, 2007. Course Description: (From the CSM Catalogue) Students survey three centuries of Renaissance Italy. The course explores political and social structures that produced a rich tapestry of the art of the period. Students study painting, sculpture and architecture. They learn about artists, patrons and societies affected by an innovative philosophy. There is a required field trip to the National Gallery of Art in Washington, DC. Course Objectives: ✭ Gain a thoughtful appreciation of art of the Renaissance period through the study of the diverse artists who created it; ✭ Acquire knowledge of the characteristics of style, the power of images, the language of art, and the vocabulary necessary to communicate a scholarly analysis of the works of the Renaissance period; ✭ Develop a method for value judgement, critical analysis, and determining the cultural significance to the Renaissance period and to our own time; ✭ Recognize the way many Renaissance artworks relate directly to our modern world and understand the lasting effects of the Renaissance period into the 21st century. READINGS The textbook, listed above, is vital. You are encouraged to bring your book to class in order to follow along in the discussion. There will be additional readings related to the class which will be assigned. You are responsible for reading the assigned pages thoroughly. LECTURE/DISCUSSION Throughout the semester we will be investigating the Renaissance by looking at specific artists and their work. The artists will be studied in chronological order by date of birth (or period of activity). For each artist we may only examine one or two works. For others (Michelangelo for example) the scope of their oeveure is such that we will look at several works but focus our discussion on a select few. The majority of the art will be paintings and sculptures. Several architectural works will also be featured. We will also be looking at art and literature from ART 1065 History of Renaissance Art FALL 2009 Tuesdays 10:00 am - 12:40 pm 2 later time periods that derive directly from the Renaissance. Active participation in discussions is required! VIDEOS There are videos you are assigned to watch which will augment several artists and information from the text. Study Questions for each video will be provided. Questions from the videos will be revisited in the discussion and may appear in the exams. You are responsible for watching the videos during your own time during the week(s) they are assigned. See further instructions on separate hand-out. EXAMS There will be a Mid-Term and a Final Exam. See the schedule for exam dates. Each exam may have multiple choice/short answer questions, compare/contrast, connections questions, short essays and slide identification questions. RESEARCH PAPER The research paper will be on an object (to be approved by the professor) from the National Gallery of Art – see field trip information below. You may write about an object from either the Italian or the Northern Renaissance collections at the NGA. See further instructions on separate hand-out. Your research paper will be turned in on December 15th at the final exam, our last class session. FIELD TRIPS The class will go on a field trip to the National Gallery of Art (NGA) in Washington, DC. The date of the trip is Saturday, September 19, 2009. Logistical travel details will be decided in class. We will spend at least 2 ½ hours in the museum. You will be focusing on the Renaissance art (Italian and Northern) collections at the NGA. From these works you will choose the object you will write your research paper on and gather preliminary information for your paper. Based upon the needs of the class, a second trip may be scheduled for later in the semester. ATTENDANCE - MISSED ASSIGNMENTS Attendance is vital for this class since it only meets once each week. Attendance will be taken at the beginning of every class. If you are absent you are responsible for determining what was missed from the text, the discussion, any assignments, and the notes. If you arrive late be sure to notify me during the break so that I do not mark you absent. You are expected to notify me if you must leave early. Habitually arriving late and/or leaving early indicates that your schedule does not accommodate this class. Be aware that the last date to withdraw without a grade is NOVEMBER 13TH. DROPPING or WITHDRAWING FROM THE CLASS If you decide that this class is not one in which you would like to participate, you must officially drop or withdraw from the class. Simply not attending class does not remove you from the roster. You MUST drop or withdraw by going to the CSM Registrar office OR on-line using the CSM website Express Services. As listed above, the last date to withdraw without a grade is NOVEMBER 13, 2009. ART 1065 History of Renaissance Art FALL 2009 Tuesdays 10:00 am - 12:40 pm 3 EXTRA CREDIT VIDEOS/PROJECTS Several videos on Italian and Northern Renaissance artists are available for extra credit (these are videos other than the ones that are assigned viewing). Each video has a set of questions to answer. Extra credit projects/papers are also available. Ask for further information. RECOMMENDED READING/VIEWING ✭ Romola by George Eliot - a novel written in 1862-3. The story concerns a young woman and her marriage to an attractive and ambitious young man who may or may not be involved in treason. It takes place in Renaissance Florence. The painter, Piero di Cosimo, is a featured character. Eliot based her characterization of Piero on Vasari. ✭ “A Room with a View” (1985) - gorgeous film version of E.M. Forester’s 1908 short novel that takes place (for the most part) in Florence. The novel is excellent reading, but of course the movie was filmed in Florence, so worth seeing if only for the location. ✭ “The Rape of Europa” (2007) - fascinating documentary about the theft/destruction of artworks by Hitler and the Nazis during World War II. ✭ There are several other excellent books and films that center on the art of the Renaissance. If you watch “The da Vinci Code,” please do so for the ART and remember that the story is FICTION. Serious art historians do not agree with Dan Brown’s theory. ACADEMIC HONESTY Copying another student’s work, copying work off the internet, or out of a book or printed source without attribution is PLAGIARISM. It is illegal and a waste of your time. Plagiarism will result in an F for the course and possible further disciplinary action by CSM. You are responsible for reading the CSM policy on Academic Honesty in the Student Code of Conduct section of the Student Handbook. ELECTRONICS / DISRUPTIONS In this class ALL personal electronic devices which ring, buzz, vibrate, talk, play music, beep, cry, click loudly, or are otherwise capable of making noise (including but not limited to cell phones, iPhones, PDA’s, children, Bluetooth headsets, Gameboys, iPods, Blackberries, and CD players), MUST be set to the OFF/Silent position. NO text messaging in class is allowed. Evidence of using electronics, headphones, earbuds, or texting in class may result in removal of electronic media units as well as the student’s person from the classroom. Use of a cell phone or other electronic/digital device and/or text messaging during an exam will result in a grade of zero. Disruptions in the classroom will NOT be tolerated. Examples include, but are not limited to: excessive talking to other students, tardiness, sleeping, listening to or operating any electronic device such as those listed above. Disruptive students will be asked to leave the classroom. At my discretion, for each instance of what I consider a disruption, points will be deducted from the total points accumulated toward your final grade. ART 1065 History of Renaissance Art FALL 2009 Tuesdays 10:00 am - 12:40 pm 4 GRADING You will receive points for the following: Videos (6) Research Paper Mid Term Exam Final Exam * 150 total possible points * 350 total possible points * 200 total possible points * 300 total possible points There are 1000 total possible points.
