Concepts related to biological sciences including cell biology, tumor biology, immunology, genetics, and pathology will be presented. The focus of this course is on principles, theories, and current research related to physiological and pathophysiological system alterations across the lifespan. COURSE OBJECTIVES Upon completion of this course the student will be able to: 1. Integrate knowledge from the physical, biological, and social sciences to understand human physiological functioning across the lifespan. 2. Analyze the relationships between normal physiological processes and pathophysiological processes across the lifespan. 3. Explain the etiology, at-risk populations, pathogenesis morphology, and clinical and diagnostics manifestations of selected acute and chronic disease states. Apply self-learning principles in the advanced practice role in integrating current research-based findings to understand etiology, pathogenesis and morphological alterations of selected acute and chronic disease states. 5. COURSE SCHEDULE Midterm Exam Final Exam This is a web- based course with no scheduled class meetings. February 25, 26, or 27, 2013 April 29, 30, or May 1, 2013 0900-2300 using Proctor U 0900-2300 using Proctor U E-Learning in Sakai is the course management system that you will use for this course. This will permit students to create an account and test out their system. o Once an instructor makes an exam available, students go online to ProctorU to schedule and pay for the exam session. Midterm Exam Total Possible = 110 points All questions will be based on posted discussion questions from weeks 1 through 7. 2. Weekly Minipapers on articles related to 15 Selected (your choice) Case Study Topics See class schedule listing of assigned Chapters and associated Case studies/week. You must do 15 minipapers this semester – an average of at least one per week. Minipapers are due in the assignment drop box on the E-Learning website during the date range listed on the weekly class schedule. Late minipapers = 2 points deduction Mini-papers can be written using research articles or information articles (secondary resources). Throughout the semester a combination of both information and research articles should be selected. (do not use textbooks for this assignment = 1 point deduction) Mini-papers should be no longer than 1 page, typed, and double spaced. 1 point for selecting a research or information article relevant to selected case study 1 point for using correct APA style on listing the reference 1 point for preparing a thoughtfully written summary 1 point for articulating an application/s for advanced nursing practice 15 Mini-papers on weekly case study topics - potential for 4 points each Total Possible = 60 points 4. Weekly Discussion Board Participation on 75 Case study topics. 1 point for engaging in discussion at least once/per 60 cases (out of 104) You may post your minipaper for any cases that you select as a minipaper case Please support your views with references Total Possible = 60 points 4 points for Discussion Board participation demonstrating Leadership in discussion In 15 selected (your choice) Case Studies with potential for 4 points each (Leadership cases must be different than 1 point cases above) Guidelines for leadership: Identify LEAD in the body of each leadership posting, begin posting on the topic before Wednesday of the discussion week (you can’t be a leader if you procrastinate on the topic), post substantively at least 3 times on the topic, post at least 3 thoughtful questions, offer differing points of view, make a significant contribution to the discussion, respond to classmate’s posting, explore evidence-based practice, support with references in APA style. You may choose to be a leader on the case studies you write your minipapers on or select different case studies to be a leader. Total Possible = 60 points 5.
