Protein Synthesis
Mrs. S. Pipke-Painchaud
Curriculum Connections:
3. Describe the structure of nucleic acids
3.1 Describe the similarities and differences in the structure of DNA and RNA
3.2 Describe the process of replication and transcription
Unit 3 (Genetics): 2.4 Describe the process of transcription.
2.5 Describe the functions of mRNA, tRNA, amino acids, and ribosomes in protein synthesis
Your Task . . . (as an individual)
~ demonstrate your understanding of the process and significance
of protein synthesis (translation)
- to describe the process in such a way that someone learning about this for the first time could
visualize and understand what is happening.
Part 1:






Compare protein synthesis a concept, action, model or process that you are familiar with.
o For example, think back to the comparisons that we have made to enzymes and RNA
Transcription.
Once you have selected a topic consider the key aspects and parts of protein synthesis –
brainstorm your concept
Next, write a brief comparison to your selected topic (try compiling into a paragraph)
Then, complete the Reflection guide attached to this assignment.
Proof your reflection and descriptive paragraph.
Hand – In – Summative Assessment.
Part 2: (you may choose to continue this assignment in more detail – Part 2 will be entered as a
separate assessment if you choose to extend your demonstration of knowledge.)
 Now that you have developed your comparison, you can extend your understanding of the
concept of protein synthesis by demonstrating your knowledge in one of the following ways.
Ways to demonstrate your understanding . . .






Create a cartoon step by step description of the processes – each character or part in your
cartoon should be similar to a step/part of the process.
Write a story which includes events that relate to these processes (include the story on the
top part of the page and the science description on the bottom) – Think of the enzyme
story I told in class.(illustrate your story book)
Create a musical piece to outline the steps of the process (consider our Musical Learning
Style discussion)
Write a script and film a video of the process (be sure to include descriptions which
clearly relates all aspects of the video to the scientific process) i.e. an interview with
mRNA or a Day in the Life of RNA
Develop a digital story.
Your own ideas – please check with Mrs. Pipke-Painchaud

Ribosome
mRNA (codons)
Begins with a Start codon
tRNA (anticodon matches up with codon)  brings specific aminio acid
move to next codon
tRNA (anticodon matches up with codon)  brings specific aminio acid
** Peptide bond** between 2 amino acids
process repeats
Stop codon
String of aa called a polypeptide.
Add sulfur = protein
o tRNA get aa from cytoplasm
 Includes name of amino acids and proper start and stop codons.

I compared protein synthesis to_________________________ to demonstrate my
understanding of protein synthesis.
Reflection:
Answer the following questions about your product:
1. In my product the Ribosome is represented by or compared to….
Because…
2. mRNA (codons) are represented by….
Because…
3. tRNA is represented by….
Because…
4. The process of the anticodon matching up with codon and bringing a specific amino
acid is similar to…..
Because…
5. Next step: Do I explain how the second tRNA (anticodon matches up with the
mRNA codon) and brings a specific aminio acid? I compared this to….
Because…
6. The * Peptide bond* between 2 amino acids is represented by….
Because…
7. Have I clearly explained how this process repeats?
8. Do I clearly include reference to correctly coded Start and Stop codons? If yes, what
are they in your example?
9. What represents a polypeptide in my product?
Because…
10. What compares to Sulfur? (Why?)
11. I have compared the protein to …..
Because…
Other points to check.
12. Have I mentioned where the tRNA get its amino acids from? Why did I choose this
comparison?
13. Have I included the name of the amino acids and proper start and stop codons?
14.
Did I code for the correct amino acids?
15.
Overall reflection….
Answer the following questions based on your review of your product:
Does my final product/comparison make it easier for someone who is unfamiliar with the
concept of protein synthesis to understand? Why or Why not? (If not, what could you
improve?)
Have you included and explained all of the details and components necessary to demonstrate
that
a) I can apply my understanding of this concept to many different types of situations.
b) I have included the detail necessary to meet the grade level expectations.
c) I have demonstrated a developing understanding of the concept.
d) I have struggled to demonstrate an understanding of this concept.
e) I need to improve this product as it does not sufficient demonstrate my understanding.
Protein Synthesis is important to my life because……
(i.e. start with why the process is significant and then compare it to your life.)
