Interactive Oral – Language and Gender You will be doing an interactive oral task for which each member of the group will be graded according to the IB language A2 oral component criteria. You will do several of these this year, and your best mark will make up 15% of your overall grade for English A2. YOUR TASK: Your group will have 45 minutes to present and evaluate what your chapter says about how men and/or women use language. The 45 minutes should consist of: Some form of ‘presentation’ of the material in your chapter Personal reaction to and critical evaluation of the chapter (such as the following) Elucidation of what the claims in your chapter mean Consideration of the implications of your chapter's claims Evaluation of the quality of your chapter's claims, arguments and evidence Consideration of the text's purpose and intended audience Analysis of the way language has been used to achieve purpose Class discussion You can choose any method you wish to present the information to the class, and should consider including a dramatic element to make things more interesting for the audience. Whatever you do, make sure that you don’t read sections of text from a piece of paper (you are only allowed to havea brief notes to remind yourself of the main points). You should also make sure that everybody contributes enough not only to the preparation, but also to the actual oral task. In order to prepare thoroughly, you’ll need to do the following: Agree together on an effective way to present the information to the class. Discuss the chapter and formulate your critical evaluation TOGETHER. Decide how you will involve the class in a discussion. Only when all the above have been done should you divide the work up and start working on your own sections individually (should you choose to work in that way). Spend some time thinking about the class discussion, don't just assume the class will respond to a couple of questions. Some kind of structured activity would be good here. Finally, it would be ideal if you have a chance to practise with your group before presenting to the class. Remember to refer to the marking criteria to know what is expected of you, and please ask me if you have any questions.
