SPORTS POLICY - CBC SPORTS DEPARTMENT Participation in Sport is regarded as highly valuable in CBC. It not only promotes physical development and well-being, but also helps each student’s integration, develops in him qualities of endurance, reliability and leadership and educates him for leisure and life. All students are required to participate in rugby or one of the alternative sports. Participation by Sixth Year students is optional, but for health and safety reasons they will be encouraged. RUGBY 1. Rugby is the only field sport played in CBC. 2. All First Years are expected to play rugby. Pupils may be allowed to take an alternative sport in exceptional circumstances. Typically three and sometimes four teams, depending on numbers are formed in First Year so that each pupil will have a team suited to his ability. 3. Pupils are encouraged to continue rugby into Second Year. However for those not keeping on rugby a number of alternative sports will be offered (see below). 4. After the junior cycle players proceed to the senior cycle where teams are based on ability and age. JCT are also based on age and ability. 5. The rugby season starts in September and end in mid-March. Senior and junior A squads train throughout the summer. 6. Rugby coaches undertake the IRB (International Rugby Board) coaching courses. Rugby workshops with professional coaches/players take place during the season. These are organised in liaison with the Leinster Branch and the IRFU. 7. Team selection will be the responsibility of the team coach. As a general rule coaches will endeavour to give all subs a game where feasible. 8. Training times are arranged at the start of each year and publicised to the pupils. Training and matches for various teams are timetabled to ensure the maximum use of pitch space. 9. Cancellation of matches or training at short notice is unavoidable if weather conditions warrant it. ALTERNATIVE SPORTS The alternative sports currently on offer are Cross Country Running (competitive events attended during the year : see athletics), P.E. (gym workout 1 located in the College), Taekwon-do (located in the College), Tennis, Golf, Swimming, and Chess. ATHLETICS Athletics starts after the rugby season. However some athletics training takes place throughout the year. Events currently entered are Pole Vault, High Jump, Long Jump, Triple Jump, Hammer, Discus, Shot, Javelin, Sprints (80m-100m), Hurdles (110m-400m), Middle Distance, Long Distance, Steeplechase, Power Walk, Medley Relays (4 x 400m) and Relays (4 x 400m). Competitions entered are the Edmund Rice All Ireland CBS Games (April – May), the East Leinster’s Schools’ Games (April-May), the Leinster’s Schools’ Games (May), the All Ireland Schools’ Games (June) and the Tailteann Games (July). CBC Monkstown has also been represented at international level. SPORTS DAY Sports Day takes place towards the end of the school year. The Assistant Gamesmaster in consultation with representatives of the Parent Council organises the day. Trophies and medals are awarded for sports events and prizes for novelty and family events. GENERAL Transition Year has a special emphasis on sport including Sailing, Judo, P.E. and Soccer. Occasionally 5-a-side soccer competitions may be run in the final term. HEALTH & SAFETY All sports especially contact sports such as rugby have risks associated with them. Precautions are taken by the College to minimise risks to students by careful planning. 1. Coaches attend First Aid basic and, subsequently, refresher courses which are offered regularly by the school. Representatives of St. John’s Ambulance or the Knights of Malta usually give the course. Primarily they must do the basic First Aid Course, and then a refresher course every two years. 2. There is well established protocol for rugby coaches at CBC in the management of neck injuries. 3. Coaches are aware of the need to warm up before rugby training and cool down afterwards. 2 4. First Aid boxes are supplied and are continually monitored and stocked on the basis of advice from first aid courses. The Coach has a copy of the phone numbers of parents of team members for contact and of insurance forms for completion in case of injury. Injuries are required to be noted in the Accident Report Book (see Safety Statement). 5. Pupils are responsible for providing their own protective gear, for example IRFU approved padding and gum shields etc. However coaches will continually remind pupils of the necessity of such protection particularly gum shields and correct foot wear. Students without such protection are not allowed to play. A Doctor is present for all senior and junior cup and league matches. 6. In the event of activation of fire alarms in the changing rooms area or the hall normal evacuation procedures should be followed. 7. Medical personnel are in attendance for the cup matches. 8. Match Report forms are filled up after every match. All injuries are noted. 9. Parents are informed of injuries. Insurance forms are readily available to claim medical expenses. 3
