ACTIVITIES FOR THE GENTLER SOUL CANOEING Full Day US$90 Half Day US$80 Overnight US$190 The trip begins with a 20km-drive along Nakatindi Road towards Botswana. Here you launch the canoes and have your safety talk. The canoes seat 2 people comfortably and there is space for storing cameras, etc. in the dry bags provided. Animal sightings (hippos, crocs, giraffes, zebra, etc.) are common as you cruise next to the National Park. The full day includes drinks and lunch. Longer trips can be organised for groups of 4 or more. Pick up: 7.30 am & 11 am. THE LION ENCOUNTER US$100 An opportunity to get up-close and personal with one of Africa’s most famous animals. Walk side-by-side through the bush with young lions aged between six weeks and one year. Be sure to wear covered shoes and long trousers. This is in Zimbabwe so you’ll have to pay for your Zim visa (and a Zambian visa upon return). Pick up is from the Zambian border post at either 6.30 am or 2 pm. Pick up: 6.30 am & 2 pm HORSE RIDING 1 ½ hr US$60 2 ½ hr US$74 Half Day US$100 Take a leisurely ride along the river or over rough terrain out along the gorges. Rides can accommodate beginners through to advanced riders. Although not in a gamerich area, the scenery is stunning and you never know what you may come across. There are various trails and no experience is needed. Safety and respect for the environment are the primary concerns. The Eco-trail covers around 40 acres through the African bush, and you may encounter game along the way. You’ll be biking for just over an hour, though longer trails may be organised. Located in one of the most scenic spots near Livingstone, you’ll have the opportunity to shoot 25 rounds. All levels from beginner (never even seen a gun) to advanced. Pick up: 4 pm LIVINGSTONE RIVER SAFARIS US$65 This is a smaller, quicker boat which can get close to the Victoria Falls and the animals that drink by the Zambezi River. An excellent choice for those who would enjoy a river experience with only a few people on board. Snacks and drinks are provided. ZAMBEZI FLOAT/ LIVINGSTONE DRIFT US$75 A mix of a booze cruise and canoeing (but with your guide doing most of the work!). Take a leisurely ride down the upper Zambezi while enjoying wine, beer, cheese and snacks. You’ll be driven up-river from Livingstone and then embark on your scenic raft trip. Sit back, relax and enjoy the beautiful view while spotting wildlife as you drift past the National Park. The 15-min flight goes over the Falls and the 30-min flight also includes a Game Flight over Mosi-oa-Tunya National Park. We recommend that you do the first or last flight of the day. You get some totally amazing photos. In the microlight the camera is mounted on the wing and you cannot bring your own camera. Pick up: 6.45 – 8am & 3 – 4.30pm. You’ll be taken by helicopter over the Falls and down into the Batoka Gorge to a white sandy beach by Rapid 21 where a buffet breakfast or lunch will be waiting for you, with soft drinks, beer and wine. After a relaxing meal, you’ll be taken by helicopter up and out of the gorge and over the Falls. Min. 4 people to confirm booking. This is one of the BEST things to do while in Livingstone and will probably be one of the highlights of your trip to Africa. You’ll be picked up from the deck of the 5* Royal Livingstone and taken by speed boat to Livingstone Island, in the middle of the Victoria Falls. After a tour around the island and photo opportunities right on the EDGE of Victoria Falls (AMAZING views!) you will be treated with 5* service to either a light breakfast snack, lunch or high tea. A once-in-alifetime opportunity! Note that there is time for swimming on only the lunch and high tea options and each trip takes a maximum of 12 people. LIVINGSTONE ISLAND WALK $35(inc. park fee) A thrilling way to see one of the best views in Zambia, this walk starts at the ‘Shop that Thunders’. On the way to the island you’ll have a chance (at low water only) to swim in the Livingstone Island pool on the edge of the Falls. Drinks will be offered on arrival at the island. Qualified guides will accompany you. Good fitness is required. Recommended footwear rafters or trainers. No flip-flops or hard-soled shoes. Max. number per group is 10. Departs 6.30 am, 8.00 am, 9.30 am or 3.30 pm VICTORIA FALLS “THE SMOKE THAT THUNDERS” OPEN 0600 – 1800 DAILY US$10 ENTRY One of the seven Natural Wonders of the World, included on the World Heritage List in 1989. The view from the Zambian side is unique and many say it is “better” than the Zimbabwean side (and we think that as well!). The Falls were named after Queen Victoria by David Livingstone. They are 1,700m wide and have a vertical drop of over 100m. There’s a number of paths to take you to all the viewpoints. A walk across the Knife-Edge Bridge is a must. The path down to the Boiling Pot is also a great experience. During low water it is possible to swim on the very edge of the Falls and at high water you can hire raincoats to keep you dry from the spray. ZIMBABWE SIDE OF THE VICTORIA FALLS OPEN 0600 – 1800 DAILY It is certainly worth seeing the Victoria Falls from ‘the other side’ if you have the extra time and money. Where the Falls are cutting back on their next zig-zag gorge is at the Devil’s Cataract in Zimbabwe. During low water, more water passes over this side… but during high water there is so much spray, there is almost no point in bringing a camera! Just get soaked and enjoy! The border shuts at 10 pm but you should cross before 9.30 pm. Visas are payable at the border in US$ cash. US$30-65 depending on nationality Entrance to Victoria Falls Zimbabwe US$20 (US$ cash only) AFRICAN ANIMALS GAME DRIVE IN MOSI-OA-TUNYA NATIONAL PARK US$45 See the only white rhino in Zambia plus giraffe, elephant, hippos, crocs, buffalo, zebra, wildebeest, warthog, antelope, many species of birds and plants. The game drive lasts for 3 hours through Mosi-oa-Tunya National Park, which is the local park in Livingstone. It has beautiful scenery and is right next to the Zambezi. Minimum of 4 people to confirm. WALKING SAFARIS IN MOSI-OA-TUNYA PARK Half Day US$65 You start your safari with a short game drive to and from the walking area. Hold your breath and be as quiet as possible as you tip-toe up to rhino, giraffe, elephant, zebra, buffalo and various other animals. It is an amazing experience, one not to be missed, and is easily the best game-viewing opportunity in the Livingstone area. The safari includes drinks and snacks. Minimum of 2 people to confirm. Bob Stjernstedt has over 35 years’ experience as a consultant ornithologist throughout Africa. His knowledge extends beyond birdlife, as he has spent years travelling and researching in the African bush. A wonderful experience for any keen birder. CROCODILE FARM ENTRY US$8 The farm has over 50 crocodiles, many of which have been caught in the Livingstone area as they sometimes become a problem. They also have several snakes and you can often interact with them. They feed both the crocs and the snakes at weekends between 2 pm and 3 pm. AFRICAN CULTURE MARAMBA MARKETS If you want to get away from the curio markets and experience local Zambian shopping, visit the Maramba market. You can find almost anything here… secondhand clothes, car parts, bikes, whole fish and chickens. The market is about 4km from Livingstone town. LIVINGSTONE MUSEUM ENTRY US$5 The museum was recently renovated and holds collections of Archaeology, Ethnography, Art, History and National History. There is a section dedicated to David Livingstone memorabilia including some hand-written letters. It is worth a visit and will take only a few hours of your day. Open 9 am – 4.30 pm BIKE TOURS Half Day US$25 Take a tour of Livingstone and the surrounding area with Cliff and his team. “Cowboy Cliff” has set up his own pre-school with the profits from his bike tours. Let him show you around and impress you with his knowledge of Livingstone, the Falls and local history. If you wish to include his school in the tour he will be more than happy for you to meet some of his students and give the teaching staff a hand. Otherwise just tell him what you want to see and where you want to go and he will ensure that you have a great day. VICTORIA FALLS BRIDGE WALK US$45 Check out one of the world’s most famous bridges. This was a major link in Cecil Rhodes’s dream of the Cape Town to Cairo route, and the Victoria Falls Bridge turned 100 years old in 2005. You’ll be kitted out with a bridge suit, harness, safety lines and hard hat before proceeding to the bottom of the bridge arch. Departures: 10.15 am and 2.30 pm RAILWAY MUSEUM ENTRY US$5 The site is a National Monument and has been restored and adapted to exhibit railway relics. The collection holds examples of steam locomotives, vintage coaches and other memorabilia.
