The Spanish I course introduces students to fundamental vocabulary and grammatical structures of the Spanish language. Students will learn about cultural aspects of the Spanish-speaking world. This is achieved by developing listening, reading, writing, and speaking skills through a variety of interactive, audio and video activities. through authentic video and audio material will be used; as well as online tutorials for grammar lessons and their explanations as part of the etextbook. and will communicate with the instructor and classmates via chat and e-mail. Demonstrate listening comprehension skills by writing in the target language what is heard, by answering questions related to the information given in a monologue, a dialogue or an interview provided by native speakers of different Spanish-speaking countries. 2. Demonstrate speaking ability by utilizing vocabulary and grammatical constructions in a prompted dialogue, an interview, or in open-ended questions. Produce original dialogues during pair/group activities and role-playing. Ask questions with proper intonation and provide general information in the present tense. 3. Demonstrate reading comprehension skills by answering questions orally or in writing after reading a passage in the target language; deduce meaning about what was read by making educated guesses using cognates and context to assist in the comprehension process. Demonstrate knowledge of parts of speech by correctly identifying verbs tenses, distinguishing between regular and irregular verbs, and recognizing different pronouns categories; show noun-verb and noun-adjective agreement and distinguish formal and informal situations; recognize and accurately use nouns, adjectives, pronouns, adverbs, conjunctions, and prepositions. Course Objectives & Topics to be cover Course Objectives Upon completion of this course, students should be able to: speak and write simple sentences about topics covered during the quarter using newly acquired vocabulary and grammatical structures understand basic questions on subjects explored during the course and reply accordingly read and comprehend the "essence" of simple authentic material (ads, messages, captions, articles, children's stories, etc.). “get by” if traveling to visit a Spanish-speaking country. This course will prepare students for Spanish 122 (Spanish II). An “A” through “C-” grade is advised to move on to the next level at minimum. Topics Covered We will cover the first 5 lessons (lessons 1-5) of the e-textbook Aventuras 4e. (You may see all lessons displayed on the AVENTURAS website; please ignore what is not covered this quarter). Some topics covered will include: Introductions & greetings, courtesy expressions, numbers, time of day, days of the week, descriptions of people& things, college life & classes, vacation plans & reservations, pastimes & sports, family & friends, inviting people, identifying places around town, seasons & weather, shopping, colors, expressing preferences, discussing how one feels, expressing ownership, etc. We will use the present, immediate-future, and present-progressive tenses. The course was designed so you may practice the lessons covered in class at your own pace, yet, use the calendar as your guide. Assignments policy — You will have 3 attempts; scores will be based on student’s most recent attempt check due dates. Every chapter has various activities to provide you ample opportunities to practice the vocabulary, grammar, and language functions presented on the e-text 5 lessons. Assignments will help you to build your listening, reading, writing, and speakimg skills in Spanish, points will be awarded accordingly. However, please DO NOT respond before the due date. You must know the vocab and material covered in a particular chapter before you answer. Also, you are only required to comment/reply on the first discussion. Please respond to the correspondent discussion by following the thread. Quizzes policy — You will have one attempt and must be taken on-line. Scores will be based on student’s most recent attempt. There will be 10 quizzes, 2 per chapter, (one vocab quiz and one grammar quiz per chapter). Points will be awarded accordingly. Exam Policy — Tests must be taken in-class, except Exam Lección 5 due to time constrain. You will have one attempt only. There will be 5 Lecciones Exams based on your e-book -one chapter test at the end of every Lección.
