STANDARD 4 COMPONENT 1
Objective: b.) Compare the transfer of energy (light, sound, and seismic waves)
c. )Describe the spread of energy away from an energy producing source.
Vocabulary
1. wavelength : The distance between successive crests of a wave
2. frequency : The number of cycles or vibrations per unit time
3. amplitude:The maximum distance the particles of a medium move away from their rest positions as the wave passes
through the medium.
4. visible color spectrum :The portion of the electromagnetic spectrum that can be detected by the human eye.
5. pitch :How high or low sound is as determined by its frequency
6. crest : The top of a wave
7. trough : The bottom of a wave
8. longitudinal wave : A wave vibrating in the direction of propagation ( the direction it travels)
9. transverse wave : A wave vibrating perpendicular to the direction of propagation or direction it travels
10.
electromagnetic spectrum : All of the forms of electromagnetic energy can be put into one category. Choose the
best.
11.
rest position: The neutral position of particles in a medium as a wave passes through the medium

Essential Question Key
1.) How are pitch and frequency related? The higher the frequency (lowe wavelength) the higher the pitch. The
lower the frequency (higher wavelength) the lower the pitch.
2.) How are energy and frequency related? If a wave has a high frequency it is very “wiggley” and has a higher
energy level. So a long, low, lazy wave will have much less energy.
3.) How does the size of medium that a wave is vibrating in affect the sound of the wave and why? If the medium
volume is small the wave will vibrate faster, have a higher frequency, and thus have a higher pitch.
