NOTES ON THE LIST OF OWNERS
These notes give supplementary information about individual owners drawn from a variety of sources, especially
contemporary directories. Where significant changes took place in the five years between the publication of Harrod’s
1870 and Barker’s 1875 directories these are indicated. References to the commentary are shown, and certain
corrections to the Return are included.
The notes are not intended to be fully comprehensive, and some may need to be verified.

This seems to be the hospital founded at East Carlton, Northants, in 1668 by Sir Geoffrey Palmer Bt, endowed
with 46 acres (identical to the quantity in the Return) ‘in the forest of Leighfield’ (Lewis 1848, 520-3) – though
why the address should be Knossington is unclear – rather than the hospital for four clergymen’s widows founded
at Knossington itself by the will of William Smith of Croxton Kerrial in 1711, and re-constituted in the early 19th
century (VCH Leicestershire V (1964) 193 – no reference to land in Rutland).
