been added to this event and a list of equipment is now included for the
equipment and instrument identification skill.
Each skill event with procedures is written up as a scenario. The
scenario usually requires the competitor to demonstrate 1-3 skills
(procedures) exactly as listed in the event guidelines. In addition, the
scenario creates a potential “situation” in which a health care worker
might actually perform the skill(s). Given the environment created by
the scenario, the competitor performs the procedures of the event and is
evaluated by a judge or judges.

Time Limit: 1 Hour for Multiple-Choice Test; top-scoring teams will
advance to Round 2 for skills demonstration, usually 1 to 3 skills
(procedures) exactly as listed in the event guidelines. HOSA will
provide cell phones for use during the event. Competitors may NOT
bring their own cell phones to any HOSA competitive event. A new
resource has been added, First Aid and Emergency Preparedness. This
resource will only be used in developing the test. The official resource
for CPR skills is the American Heart Association.
Team of 2-4 members will create an effective public health presentation
to educate the public. Topic for 2012-13 is National Prevention
Strategy. Teams will use the National Prevention Strategy: American’s
Plan for Better Health and Wellness as their resource for developing a
public health presentation about one or more of the following strategies
that contribute to the prevention of disease and the promotion of healthy
practices: injury and violence free living, tobacco free living, preventing
drug abuse and excessive alcohol use, active living and healthy eating.
Competitors will be given a maximum of two hours to complete the test
and case study. See online resources in event guidelines.

Guidelines have been reworded to stress that the competitor must
prepare a one-page resume in Word and submit it by January 31, 2012 to
state HOSA and May 15 to national HOSA as an attachment if state
finalist. The cover letter is to be submitted in the body of the e-mail and
NOT as an attachment.

Each competitor will set a personal goal and document his or her efforts
in a personalized Healthy Lifestyle notebook. Time period begins on or
after September 1, 2012 and will conclude on February 15, 2013.
Teams of 3-4 competitors to follow a modified Lincoln-Douglas debate
format. 2012-2013 Topic: Physician Participation in Lifestyle

Should doctors decide whether to treat you or perform certain kinds
of surgeries based on whether you are a smoker or not, along with
whether you are obese? Physicians say they already routinely deny
many cosmetic surgeries and fertility treatments to smokers and the
obese, and these factors are used to determine eligibility for many organ
transplant procedures. Should physicians support lifestyle rationing, or
any type of health care rationing? (Key search terms include but are not
limited to lifestyle rationing, health care rationing, rationing healthcare
resources, health care costs) The multiple-choice questions on the
Round One test will assess knowledge of the topic.
Team of 2-4 competitors. Refer to Community Awareness rules and
procedures in Competitive Events Handbook. Portfolio must be
contained in an official HOSA notebook or portfolio purchased from

Teams that advance to Round 2 will complete a two-part analysis of the
case study. Typically, the problem includes a crime scene or description
of the events leading to the death of a victim(s), and additional
documentation which generally includes an autopsy.
Team of 2 competitors. Electrical power will no longer be provided for
this event. Competitors may use batteries to power laptops and other
parts of their displays.

objective, then prepare a lesson, provide instruction, and evaluate
results. See website for details of notebook and media. Maximum
length of lesson (instruction) will be forth (40) minutes. HE Notebook –

2012-13 topic is: No Pressure! Tips for Recognizing and Preventing
Hypertension
The actual title can be changed by the team, as long as the PSA
encourages the public to recognize and prevent hypertension.
PSA will be recorded on a DVD in minus R format. Teams will be
given 4 minutes to describe their creative process, public use of the PSA,
and how they think the PSA will change the public’s opinion, actions, or
feelings.
Hawaii will probably be able to enter 35 participants in this event
according to the formula. See event guidelines for details. The National
test will cover information from July 1, 2012 – May 1, 2013.
Refer to Barbara James Service Award rules and procedures in
Competitive Events guidelines. Bronze, silver and gold awards based on
the number of community service hours. Be sure to check to see what
can be counted as APPROVED volunteer community service hours.
State HOSA Coordinator will select.
Portfolio
HOSA member will create a portfolio of evidence of his/her
accomplishments in preparation for a health career. See event guidelines
for specifics. Portfolio must be contained in an official HOSA portfolio
binder purchased from Awards Unlimited. (NRP Portfolio – NBK150,
NBK250 or PBK2002)
