When Can I Bring my
Device to School?
Does your student have their own laptop, tablet or
chromebook they use to stay organized, connected
and informed at home? These devices are also a
great tool to stay productive at school. Students are
encouraged to bring their personal chromebooks,
laptops or tablets to class to use on a daily basis,
and can be used in place of school devices at any
time. There are already a large number of EMS
students who choose to bring their own, and we
hope that number will continue to grow. While cell
phones and ipods can also be great learning tools,
and may be used occasionally with prior teacher
approval, these devices are too small for serious
academic work and should remain in lockers during
class.
From May 18th to May 22nd, EMS will be hosting
“Digital Learning Week.” Over these five days,
teachers and students will continue to use
technology to collaborate, create and share their
learning. During this week, we especially
encourage students to bring their own technology
(laptops, chromebooks, tablets) to EMS each day.
This week will culminate with a “Parent Showcase
of Learning.” MARK YOUR CALENDARS - on
Friday, May 22nd, our classroom doors will be
open for all parents to stop in and view any
classroom in action. Just sign in, get a visitor badge,
and browse our digital classrooms! There will also
be several parent presentations given in the Media
Center throughout the day.
Ellington Community Theatre
Ellington Community Theatre (Arts from
the Heart, LLC, in cooperation with Ellington
Youth Services and Ellington Parks and Recreation)
presents summer theatre for children entering third
grade in the fall of 2015 through adults. We’ve
chosen Seussical! It’s a wonderful show filled with
great music, awesome costumes and a creative set.
The show dates are July 24th and July 25th.
For more information and to register, please click
here, or go online at www.artsfromtheheart.net.
Next School Dance
The last dance of the school year will be held
on Friday, May 1st. The theme of this dance is
USA – red, white and blue. Students are
encouraged to wear one or all three colors, but they
are not required to do so. Tickets will go on sale
during all lunch waves on Monday, April 27th. No
tickets will be sold at the door the night of the
dance. The dance is from 7:00pm to 9:30pm.
Please remember that pick up time is promptly at
9:30pm. Here are some reminders about dances
here at EMS:






All students are welcome to attend the dance,
but the dance is for EMS students only – no
guests allowed.
Please remember that the dress code for the
dance is the same as the dress code during the
school day.
Students need to be dropped off and picked up
on time. Prompt pick up of your child is greatly
appreciated. Any student picked up more than a
half hour after the end of the dance will forfeit
the opportunity to attend the next dance or other
end of the year activities.
Cell phones may be brought to the dance.
However, cell phone use is NOT allowed during
the dance. If a cell is being used during the
dance, it will be taken from the student and
returned at the end of the event.
If a student needs to arrive late or leave early,
please contact the school to make those
arrangements.
Please note the doors will not open until the
start of the dance at 7:00pm. If students are
dropped off early, they should be prepared to
wait outside. Coat storage will be available
once students enter the building.

If you have any other questions, please contact the
school.

SBAC Testing
This is a reminder that EMS students began SBAC
testing in the areas of Language Arts and math on
Wednesday, April 22nd. Testing is expected to
continue until May 14th. Make up testing will be
scheduled for students who are absent.
Eighth Grade Science Update
We have started the Independent Study
Unit that will carry us to the end of the year.
Students have selected their topics and have created
a blog page. Please take a moment to have your
child show you their work online. Everything is
accessible from home, and we are encouraging
students to use class time wisely as there are several
components to this unit. (Scientist report, lab report,
model). Click here for more information. Some of
the topics are really exciting and challenging. We
are looking forward to their final video
presentations to culminate this unit.
