Distance Learning Course Development Purdue University Extended Campus Distance Learning Course Development Guidelines Purdue Extended Campus invites proposals for the development of new online courses. PURPOSE The purpose of this initiative is to convert a new cohort of face-to-face courses into online sections thereby expanding the accessibility of needed courses to Purdue West Lafayette students. The development of a new online course or the conversion of a face-to-face course to online delivery requires transformation. This initiative funds the transformation and provides the training and support necessary through PEC and/or ITAP. ELIGIBILITY_/ TYPES OF GRANTS______________________________________________ Any full-time, part-time, tenured or non-tenured faculty members are eligible to apply. TO APPLY 1. Submit a two-page proposal describing the following: Course name and number Anticipated frequency of offering Number of students taking the course per offering and the section enrollment cap Number of students anticipated in an online section 2. All applicants are strongly encouraged to consult with Purdue Extended Campus (PEC) to determine if other resources or assistance are needed/available outside of your expertise. 3. Complete the application. 4. Submit an approved (Department Head and Dean signatures) application. 5. All applicants will be notified of the funding decision by e-mail within four to six weeks of submission. SUPPORTED EXPENSES_ New projects can be funded up to one-month faculty/staff salary or $5,500 if a graduate instructor develops, with the last $2,500 paid contingent upon a peer review using a course design rubric. This review should take place before the course is taught for the first time. Grants may include up to $1500 in needed supplies and expenses (S&E). GRANT SELECTION CRITERIA AND EXPECTATIONS_ _____ Designated members from Purdue Extended Campus and/or ITaP’s Instructional Development Center (IDC) will review applications and make funding decisions based on the following criteria: 1. Priority consideration will be given to: general education courses; courses required in one or more majors; courses required for completion of a certificate, minor, or degree Distance Learning Course Development Purdue University Extended Campus 2. 3. 4. 5. program; courses that are in high demand; courses that have potential for sustainable enrollment; courses with a clear departmental impact or interdepartmental collaboration. Quality of the development plan will be evaluated using the criteria below: a. Extent of consideration given to and details about student-student, studentteacher interaction in an online environment b. Extent of consideration given to and details about assessment and evaluation in an online environment c. Feasibility of the development timeline Grant activity is aligned with the Online Learning Course Development grant goals: a. Focused on online learning b. Seeks to increase the number of online courses for delivery to on-campus students c. Designed to expand student access Application is completely filled out with appropriate signatures. Grant costs are reasonable and appropriate. If the grant is funded: You may be required (if you are not proficient with Blackboard Vista) to attend IT Services’ Blackboard workshops. You will be required to meet with a PEC/IDC Instructional Designers. To receive the last $2500, your course must be peer reviewed using a course design rubric. o In the last stages of development, before the course is taught online for the first time, the faculty developer will review the course design through peer review. The reviewer would be someone who is agreed to by both PEC/IDC and the course instructor. At the completion of the project, awardees may be called upon to share their experience and expertise with colleagues, for example, in grant preparation briefings for prospective applicants, a teaching conference presentation, a PEC program, or one-on-one or group peer consulting with a colleague. Discuss how you plan to incorporate these standards into the development. 6. Include a timeline for development up to the semester in which the course will first be offered. 7. Budget (allowance for one-month salary or graduate support) and up to $1,500 in equipment. APPROVALS_____ _ Signatures of the developer/instructor, department head, and dean on this application, when accepted for funding, indicate a commitment of the faculty member, department and college to offer the developed course as described. Should the faculty developer be unavailable to teach the course after development, the department will assign another instructor to teach the course.
