Name:

HAMLET: THE SANITY SCALE

Throughout the play, Hamlet seems to embody various degrees of his “antic disposition” or “madness”.

Regardless of whether said disposition is self-imposed, fabricated or otherwise, there is ample evidence through the acts to illustrate the Dane’s antics. The basic idea of the sanity scale is to track Hamlet's psychological state through the course of the play, using your own created (SANITY-INSANITY) scale as the "Y-AXIS" and using direct quotes from the play as the "X-AXIS." A careful look at your sanity scale will allow you to draw conclusions about Hamlet’s purported sanity.

You can choose to represent Hamlet alone, or you can have several lines for several different characters.

Try to invent a new or fresh approach to the assignment. The above chart is merely meant to illustrate one possible design; feel free to create your own.

Your chart MUST have:

A Y-Axis illustrating some level of sanity or lack thereof

A chronologically arranged X-Axis

At least 10 plotted “sanity points”

A direct quotation from the play for each plotted point

A typed paragraph for each plotted point explaining: o What is being said o Why and how it show Hamlet’s level of sanity/insanity o The contextual implications of the sanity/insanity

This mini-project is due: Thursday, February 16

Note: you may work in a pair if you wish, but each pair must find, plot and explain 20 quotations rather than ten
