If everyone had regular cancer-related checkups, we could improve survival rates by finding any problems in their earliest, most curable stages. Have you had your checkup this year? If not, call your provider on Monday to make an appointment! Stop colon cancer Everyone over age 50 should have: Colon cancer checkups (Several different options are available; ask your provider for details.) General health counseling before it starts! Colon cancer almost always starts with a polyp and no symptoms. A screening test can discover polyps and they can be removed before cancer has the chance to begin. Women should have: Mammograms (annually, beginning at age 40) Clinical breast exams (at least every three years for women in their 20s and 30s, and every year for women 40 and over) Breast self-examination is an option, starting at age 20 Pap tests for cervical cancer Men should have: Conversations with their providers about testing for prostate cancer Visit cancer.org/healthy for complete screening recommendations Reduce Your Cancer Risk Stay away from tobacco. Stay at a healthy weight. Get moving with regular physical activity. Eat healthy with plenty of fruits and vegetables. Limit how much alcohol you drink (if you drink at all). Protect your skin. Know yourself, your family history, and your risks. Have regular check-ups and cancer screening tests. For information on how to reduce your cancer risk and other questions about cancer, please call us anytime, day or night, at 1-800-227-2345 or visit us online at cancer.org. Thanks in large part to the work of the American Cancer Society, the five-year relative survival rate from cancer has tripled in the last 50 years. Today, about 67 percent of those who are diagnosed with cancer will still be alive five years after diagnosis. Routine cancer screening tests such as the Pap test and mammography were developed and widely promoted by the Society, and now save millions of lives each year. Our challenge today is to encourage more people to go for colon cancer screening, which could save thousands more lives every year. The American Cancer Society first established the link between smoking and cancer, and has since helped millions of smokers quit through the Great American Smokeout®, Smokers’ Quitlines, and advocacy for tobacco control policy changes such as increased tobacco taxes. New England has the greatest number of smoke-free worksites in the nation, thanks to the efforts of our volunteers and supporters. The Society assists cancer patients and their families with temporary housing at its three New England Hope Lodges®, and helps kids with cancer through its three summer camps. Underserved women can now receive treatment as well as screening for breast and cervical cancers, because the Society advocated for the Breast and Cervical Treatment Act. The American Cancer Society supports lifesaving cancer research. As the number-one private funder of cancer research in the nation, the American Cancer Society has invested $3.6 billion since 1946 to fund innovative new research. Over the years, 46 of the scientists we have funded went on to receive the Nobel Prize. In New England, nearly $60 million in American Cancer Society cancer research grants are in effect. The American Cancer Society educates cancer patients and those who care about them. We’re the most trusted source of cancer information. More than 41,000 New Englanders called our Cancer Information Specialists at 1-800-227-2345 last year. We couldn’t provide these programs and services without your help. Thank you for your continued support of the American Cancer Society! Top 10 Reasons to take part in Relay for Life: (If you check at least two, you are in the right place!) 10.
