Welcome, and Thank You!
We're grateful that you are part of the American Cancer
Society Relay For Life of Chittenden! Team captains,
walkers, committee members, survivors, sponsors, teams, and
entertainers – all of you play an integral part in advancing
the fight against cancer.
Joining today's Relay For Life is one way we're making a
difference, but what about when the day is over? The
American Cancer Society has a variety of volunteer
opportunities, and we'd love you to get involved!
Nationwide, more than three million people like you
volunteer for the American Cancer Society, and that’s one
reason we’re so effective, both locally and nationally.
Volunteers help out with patient services, cancer prevention
and detection programs, fundraising, program delivery,
advocacy, and administrative support. Talk to one of our
Relay planning committee members to find out how you can
join us, and be part of a team that really makes a
difference!
Sincerely,
Sheri Thayer, Tammy Lutz, Sarah Ricker

Have You Had a Checkup Lately?
If everyone had regular cancer-related checkups, we could
improve survival rates by finding any problems in their
earliest, most curable stages. Have you had your checkup
this year? If not, call your provider
on Monday to make an appointment!
Stop colon cancer
Everyone over age 50 should have:
 Colon cancer checkups (Several
different options are available;
ask your provider for details.)
 General health counseling
before it starts!
Colon cancer almost
always starts with a
polyp and no symptoms. A
screening test can
discover polyps and they
can be removed before
cancer has the chance to
begin.
Women should have:
 Mammograms (annually, beginning at age 40)
 Clinical breast exams (at least every three years for
women in their 20s and 30s, and every year for women 40
and over)
 Breast self-examination is an option, starting at age 20
 Pap tests for cervical cancer
Men should have:
 Conversations with their providers about testing for
prostate cancer
Visit cancer.org/healthy for complete screening
recommendations

Have regular check-ups and cancer screening tests.


other questions about cancer, please call us anytime,

Cancer Survivors: Our Inspiration!
The American Cancer Society considers a cancer survivor to
be anyone who defines him- or herself as a survivor, from
the time of diagnosis through the balance of life. Whether

survivor, and we welcome you!
Please be sure to join us on Friday, June 22nd for:
 3- 5:45 p.m. Survivor Registration in Survivor Tent
(Sign in & pick up your survivor t-shirt and medal)
 4-4:30 p.m. Performance- Carol Ann Jones
 4:45-5:00 p.m. Zumba Gold Demo
 5:00 p.m. Raffle begins
 5:45 p.m. Survivor/Caregiver Photo and Taiko Drummers
begin
 6:00 p.m. Opening Ceremonies and judging of desserts
 7:00 p.m. Survivor/Caregiver lap (team lap to follow)
 7:30 p.m. Dessert Reception Begins (performance- Irish
Band Longford Row)
 9:30 p.m. Luminaria Ceremonies
Relay Dollars Make a Difference!
Thanks in large part to the work of the American Cancer
Society, the five-year relative survival rate from cancer
has tripled in the last 50 years. Today, about 67 percent of
those who are diagnosed with cancer will still be alive five
years after diagnosis. Routine cancer screening tests such
as the Pap test and mammography were developed and widely
promoted by the Society, and now save millions of lives each
year. Our challenge today is to encourage more people to go
for colon cancer screening, which could save thousands more
lives every year.
The American Cancer Society first established the link
between smoking and cancer, and has since helped millions of
smokers quit through the Great American Smokeout®, Smokers’
Quitlines, and advocacy for tobacco control policy changes
such as increased tobacco taxes. New England has the
greatest number of smoke-free worksites in the nation,
thanks to the efforts of our volunteers and supporters.
The Society assists cancer patients and their families with
temporary housing at its three New England Hope Lodges®, and
helps kids with cancer through its three summer camps.
Underserved women can now receive treatment as well as
screening for breast and cervical cancers, because the
Society advocated for the Breast and Cervical Treatment Act.
The American Cancer Society supports lifesaving cancer
research. As the number-one private funder of cancer
research in the nation, the American Cancer Society has
invested $3.6 billion since 1946 to fund innovative new
research. Over the years, 46 of the scientists we have
funded went on to receive the Nobel Prize. In New England,
nearly $60 million in American Cancer Society cancer
research grants are in effect.
The American Cancer Society educates cancer patients and
those who care about them. We’re the most trusted source of
cancer information. More than 41,000 New Englanders called
our Cancer Information Specialists at 1-800-227-2345 last
year.
We couldn’t provide these programs and services without your
help. Thank you for your continued support of the American
Cancer Society!
