Significance of the Study
The group will conduct this study to raise consumer’s awareness
whether they get their money’s worth on the products they buy on a
day-to-day basis. The group chose Vinda because most of the
salesladies in a Chinese supermarket said that it was one of the famous
brands. They chose Joy for it is a well known company in the
Philippines. Also, most of the members in the group often see it in
their households. One roll of Joy(2 ply) is 12 pesos, while one roll of
Vinda is 18.55 pesos.
Related Literature
The first roots of the tissue paper date back to 1391 AD, when a
Chinese Emperor demanded thin paper sheets; measuring 2ft by 3ft, to
be sliced and placed in his outhouse. Later in 1877, Seth Wheeler
invented the first “official” tissue paper. Tissue paper is one the most
common household substances. Manufacturers claim that an average
roll lasts for only five days. It allows one to wipe wet surfaces and is
used for hygienic purposes. Its quality is determined by its absorbency.
There are tiny openings that allow water to enter the tissue paper. The
number of layers in a tissue paper is called ply.
Problem:
Which brand of tissue paper, Chinese or Filipino, will give you your
money’s worth in terms of absorbency?
Hypothesis
The group believes that Joy will give the buyers their money’s
worth because of it has a P6.55 advantage on Vinda.
Variables
Independent: Brand of tissue paper.
Dependent: Amount of water absorbed.
Controlled: Plies per tissue square, amount of water, size of graduated
cylinder and containers, temperature, surroundings, time for dripping, Time for
soaking water/underwater.
Materials Needed
1 roll of Chinese branded toilet paper(Vinda)
1 roll of Philippine branded toilet paper (Joy)
1 graduated cylinder
1200ml of water
2 forks
Funnel(improvised)
2 identical basins named Joy and Vinda
Procedure
.Step 1: Take 3 squares of toilet paper from each Vinda and 3 squares
from Joy, and fold/stack them until they are only one
square.
Step 2: Get the Graduated cylinder filled up with 200ml water.
Step 3:Pour the 200ml of water into basin Joy. Do the same for basin
Vinda.
Step 4: Take the Filipino brand(Joy) and dip them in basin Joy for 30
seconds. Do the same thing with the Chinese brand(Vinda) and basin
Vinda simultaneously.
Step 5: After the 30 seconds, let both of the tissue paper drip for 5
seconds over their respective basins, then take them out.
Step 6: Pour the remaining water in basin Joy into the graduated
cylinder using the funnel, and record the amount of water left. Do the
same thing with basin Vinda.
Step 7: Subtract the amount of water lost from the amount of water in
the start and record them in a table.
Step 8: Divide the amount of water absorbed by the number of squares
used, then multiply it by the number of squares in a roll. After that,
divide by the price of the roll to find out how much it costs to absorb
this amount of water with a certain brand.

This table shows that Vinda clearly absorbs more water than Joy. In
the three squares that were taken from each, Vinda always absorbs
more by a margin of four to seven ml of water. In average, Vinda
absorbes 14ml per 3 squares and Joy absorbs about 8.5ml per 3
squares.

This table also shows that 1 roll of Vinda is able to absorb more
water than 1 roll of Vinda, however, Joy gives the buyer more of their
money's worth. This is because of Joy's price being P6.55 cheaper than
Vinda, giving it an advantage. Though Vinda absorbs much more more
water than Joy, it is also about 150% more expensive than Joy, which
caused it to lose. Their difference in mL absorbed per peso is about
7mL.
Conclusion:
Even though the Vinda brand absorbs more water than Joy, the price
difference between the two determines that Joy absorbs more water per
peso, thus giving the buyer more of his/her money's worth.
Recommendations/Application/Insights
The experiment can be done more times to get the most accurate
results in which one gives the buyer his/her money's worth. We hope
that this will raise the customer's awareness if what they are buying is
the best for their money's worth.
