EMBRAER 190 ROLLOUT MARKS NEW PHASE IN DEVELOPMENT OF EMBRAER 170/190 FAMILY New transport jet is largest commercial aircraft ever produced in Brazil São José dos Campos, February 9, 2004 – Embraer unveiled today the EMBRAER 190, the new member of the EMBRAER 170/190 family. The jet will play a key role in commercial air transportation for allowing airlines to adjust capacity to demand with unprecedented precision, providing considerable edge for carriers’ profitability. “We believe Embraer’s constant drive to develop products with excellence enabled the company to design an aircraft model that will exceed the expectations of the most demanding operators,” said Maurício Botelho, President and CEO of Embraer. “The EMBRAER 190 has all the attributes needed to help us strengthen our competitive position in global markets and keep Embraer on a continuous growth path.” The EMBRAER 190 is the largest commercial jet ever manufactured in Brazil. Seating 100 passengers at a generous four-abreast 32-inch pitch cabin – or up to 108 in a higher density configuration at 31-inch pitch. The jet is the newest of a four-member family developed by Embraer in a partnership with many of the world’s most renowned aerospace companies. This next-generation aircraft family consists of the EMBRAER 170, EMBRAER 175, EMBRAER 190, and EMBRAER 195, which have been designed following detailed studies of industry trends and the new requirements for performance, comfort and attractive economics. “Our newest product line is very competitive in its mission profile and will improve the airlines’ ability to close the existing capacity gap between regional jets and the narrowbody, mainline jets. It is indeed a great satisfaction witnessing the rollout of the EMBRAER 190, whose unmistakable appeal has already attracted 110 firm orders even before its maiden flight,” said Frederico Fleury Curado, Executive Vice-President – Civil Aircraft for Embraer. Development of the EMBRAER 170/190 family started in June 1999 under a program budgeted at US$ 850 million. While the current commercial success of the new family is compelling evidence of an untapped 70- to-110-seat market, Embraer’s strategy to offer a product that allows airlines to optimize the structure of their commercial fleets will prove itself effective for years to come. The new family has 245 firms orders and 305 options. This computerized management system optimizes engine operation during all phases of flight, reducing fuel consumption and maintenance costs. Like the other members of the family, the EMBRAER 190 has four main cabin doors and offers airlines fast turn-around times and maximum cabin configuration flexibility for dual class, single class, or high-density seating arrangements. One of the strengths of the EMBRAER 170/190 project is the comfort provided by the double-bubble fuselage design. Unlike other aircraft with this seating capacity, this design offers much more room around passengers’ shoulders and feet. Additionally, seats and aisles are the widest among airliners of the same class. “We have engaged current and potential customers to drive the design of the EMBRAER 170/190 family from the early stages of the program. The interaction between Embraer and 32 airlines from around the world brought significant contributions to the program,” said Luís Carlos Affonso, Senior Vice-President – Engineering and New Product Development at Embraer. The high degree of commonality among the four family airliners also results in exceptional operating and maintenance cost reduction for the carriers. Moreover, cross crew qualification (CCQ) allows better utilization of resources without the restrictions normally associated with mixed-fleet flying. Another important feature of the EMBRAER 170/190 program is the use of fly-by-wire technology for the flight control systems, similar to those deployed on advanced military aircraft and larger commercial jets. Additionally, all four jets of the new family are designed to meet and exceed the demanding noise and emission-related requirements established by the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO). Production, Partners and Suppliers Embraer is in charge of conception, design and development of the EMBRAER 170/190 aircraft family, as well as manufacturing of the forward fuselage, fuselage center section, and aircraft integration. They are responsible for designing and supplying the structural segments and main systems of the aircraft. The exchange of data and technical information between Embraer, partners and suppliers located in different parts of the world is carried out through a secure and dedicated network – the Web 170. The system grants access to the same database for all parties involved, enhancing communication among design engineers. The companies responsible for structural segments include: Kawasaki Heavy Industries (Japan), Sonaca (Belgium), Latécoère (France), and Gamesa (Spain). C&D Aerospace (United States) is supplying the interior. In addition to engine supplier General Electric, the main system partners include: Hamilton Sundstrand, Honeywell, Parker (United States) and Liebherr (Germany). “The EMBRAER 190 is the first member of the new family that already brings a complete set of wings entirely assembled at a unit of Kawasaki located at our industrial facility in Gavião Peixoto,” said Mauro Kern, EMBRAER 190 Program Manager. As a demonstration of confidence and commitment that goes back to the development of the company’s ERJ regional jet program, Liebherr, Sonaca and C&D Aerospace have set up subsidiaries in Brazil to produce parts locally for the new family and cut production cycles. The EMBRAER 190 is assembled at the company’s main facility in São José dos Campos. One of the characteristics of the EMBRAER 170/190 program is the use of a dock system in final assembly, which allows for more manufacturing flexibility and assembly cycle reduction. Development and Test Campaign Some 1,200 hours of wind tunnel testing were performed to evaluate and refine the EMBRAER 190’s aerodynamic configuration. An offshoot of the wind test campaign is optimization of the flight test program, expected to last about a year. The principle of concurrent engineering has been applied extensively in the program as well: the design teams work in close cooperation with production area personnel, service and product support technicians to ensure the airplane is easy to manufacture and easy to support in the field. Additionally, these tools contribute to cut costs and development cycles, as well as minimize expensive and time-consuming changes later in the program. All the development teams at Embraer and partner companies have been working since the early stages of the design to ensure maximum maturity when the aircraft enters into service. Besides engineering and testing far beyond the certification requirements – production, quality assurance and customer services will contribute to a smooth and trouble-free operation from the first day of the aircraft’s revenue service. The aircraft’s structural certification will be accomplished with the use of two full-scale test specimens performing static and fatigue tests on the ground. Aircraft systems are being thoroughly validated in several different test rigs. A complete “Iron Bird” – a test stand developed for fly-by-wire and systems integration testing which otherwise could only be carried out in flight test – will be entirely dedicated to the EMBRAER 190 certification campaign. The EMBRAER 190 is scheduled to make its first flight in the coming weeks. The flight test campaign is to begin soon after the jetliner’s maiden mission, eventually involving four aircraft. The flight test campaign will be entirely conducted at the company’s new facilities at Gavião Peixoto. Conclusion of the flight test campaign will validate the new aircraft to receive full type certification in the third quarter of 2005. This will immediately be followed by the first deliveries to launch customer JetBlue Airways. Embraer expects to receive full type certification for the EMBRAER 170 in February and for the EMBRAER 195 in the second quarter of 2006. Meanwhile, Embraer has decided to reschedule the certification of the EMBRAER 175 due to changes in market conditions and customers’ demand requirements. The EMBRAER 175 is now expected to receive full type certification in the fourth quarter of 2004. Customer Support The EMBRAER 190 program counts on the wide-ranging and efficient Embraer customer service and product support network, which operates 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, and has service centers, technical support and spare parts distribution facilities in Brazil, the U.S., the U.K., France, Australia and China. Equally important, Embraer’s training providers GECAT and SAT have in place two full flight simulators qualified for the EMBRAER 170 that will in the future have the capability to train pilots to fly the EMBRAER 190. Moreover, additional full flight simulators are being built to supply the necessary full flight simulation time to comply with the demands of present and future EMBRAER 170/190 fleets. Another key customer support tool is AEROChain, an electronic platform that connects the customers, partners and the company through the Internet to provide value-added aftersales services and extended supply chain collaboration.
