Spanish 4 Señora Campbell Class Expectations and guidelines Course Outline At the advanced level we will do various activities that allow the student to express themselves using the appropriate amount of the language. We will be focusing on advanced grammar and literature in the target language, and students will be able to apply literary concepts that they are learning in their English Literature classes. By doing so, the student will be prepared for the challenges of college Spanish. Because of the rigorous expectations of this course, all communication during class will be conducted in Spanish. Texts Used: Nuevas Vistas- Holt, Rinehart, and Wintson Excerpts from Repaso-Glencoe Classroom set of workbooks from Nuevas Vistas Late Work Provided you have an excused absence, you are entitled to that many days to do your make up work. After that time period, a penalty will occur (see below for late work policy). Anything you missed will be in the make up folders in the filing cabinets under the television. Your name will be on any papers you need to make up, but please make sure to see your class partner for notes. Please review the school wide policies on attendance in the code of conduct on page 14-15. As a department, we do accept late work with a penalty. For process grades, if it is turned in the next day, a 50% deduction will occur. After that, it’s a zero. For product grades, a 10% deduction for every day late will occur. Grading The course is divided into two marking periods, which count for 40% each and a midterm assessment and final exam, which count for 10% each toward your final course grade. This course is weighted as an honors course, and grades are determined as follows: 30% Process- Formative evaluation of student work used for the purpose of providing feedback regarding progress toward standards. May include: homework, class work, participation, quizzes. 70% Product- Summative assessment used to measure the degree to which a standard has been met. May include: tests, projects, essays, presentations. Progress reports are available, however, you should be able to monitor your grade on Home Access. Extra Credit Due to the expectations set forth in this course, extra credit is not widely offered. However, at my discretion, extra credit assignments may be given. They usually are culture-based and require outside research. Cheating Besides all other obvious forms of cheating, the use of translators for projects, papers, and any other form of assessment is NOT ALLOWED. We allow the use of dictionaries for single word or phrase reference and verb books to check conjugations, but anything that is translated by an electronic device or computer program/website is considered cheating and will not be tolerated. Cheating will result in a zero without an opportunity to make up the assignment. Materials Needed-bring every day! 3 ring binder with 6 dividers and pockets Spanish- English dictionary Pen or pencil/paper Book-will be issued and YES, you need it every day!!!! Participation Participation is an expected part of any language class. While I do not have a specific participation grade, students are encouraged to involve themselves as much as possible in the daily communication. Students’ participation is noted daily and will be taken into consideration when deciding if and when to offer extra credit. Students who answer questions are not the only ones participating in my class. You have to be on task to ask for help as well. Participation means that you participate in your own education.
