Figurative Language Dictionary
Your book of figurative language will help you throughout the year to describe
some of the the special words we use to express the ourselves vividly and in new
interesting ways. Your booklet should include the following:
1. A beautiful and colorful cover
OXYMORON
Collage or
2. 8+ pages of Figurative Language, which will
-Definition
illustration
-Examples
include:
a. A title, for example “Oxymoron,” and a
definition in your own words
b. Two or more unique examples wrtitten by you
c. At least one example from an independent reading
book. Be sure to include the author, title and page
number from the book you are citing. Example format (Gary
Paulsen, Nightjohn, page 91).
d. One more example colorfully illustrated or collaged on the facing
page
Suggested terms: Alliteration, Personification, Onomatopoeia, Idiom,
Oxymoron, Hyperbole and two more that you do not already know. More terms
can be found at the following web sites, http://literary-devices.com/,
http://www.spellingpolice.com/higher/. Please let your teacher know if you find
an additional Figurative Language site that you find useful.
Due Dates:
 September 11 or 12 - One Figurative Language page completed and
checked by a classmate or teacher.

