CALL TO ORDER
The meeting of October 21 st , 2010 was called to order at 6:01 p.m.

REPORT OF THE SPEAKER OF SENATE
Hart- idea to have a sustainability casual event. Willing to sign pledge, stop by
Senator Smiths office to get a t shirt next week. Weekly meeting with
committees, going well. Moving a lot of plans forward, will hear updates in
the reports. Rooney sent around an interesting article, increasing
productivity. Stay up to date. Worked out the details about the merger
between Allied Health. UFB Bill in meeting. Pass with Enactment Bill. Just
passed a ways and means bill. Encouraged to look over and have questions
and thoughts prepared. Student Trustees has a meeting early next Thursday
morning. Check email and respond. If you are planning on running, you cant
be involved with the meetings. Let Hart know if you plan o n running, can
discuss in private. Need to emphasize the important of the trustees.
Extremely high honor, also a lot of work. It’s a 2 year term, good academic
standing. All details in application when the committee finalizes everything.
FYE decisions has been made. Why you should sign up to be a mentor.
Encourages to sign up. Its perpetual to the leadership of the organization. All
mentees need a good experience so must block out time. Working on
scheduling meetings with all of the senators over the next c ouple weeks. Pay
attention to emails. Needs an update on progression and what you might
need help on. Next public board meeting is Tuesday, November 18 th . Next
week, rock out sustainability water bottle. Created a Linked IN page. Check it
out.
REPORT OF THE STUDENT BODY PRESIDENT
Sat in on FYE interviews. Thanks to Sutton and Brown. Attended tacos on
Thursday with Rooney for the ending of Hispanic month, interesting and
enjoying. Kudos to applied science tribunal for career fair. Did you know that
UC offers free AA meetings? They are confidential.
REPORT OF THE STUDENT BODY VICE-PRESIDENT
Talk about increasing diversity on board. Sr. Lopez will update you. Yield to
Lopez. The Goal is to increase our international body by 3,200 students with
China being the leader. A lot of people are traveling to advertise. There is
another goal to recruit international students from community colleges from
around the country. Global scholarship will reward 2 international students
with full tuition.
Director Sutton- would have loved to take all 78 applicants. There is space for
46 applicants. Appreciate people taking mentors. Benefits of FYE interning have more time to give duties to. 1 office hour and weekly meetings. Spend
office hour with mentor. They will learn all the basic skills. Show them what
student government is really about. Pass around sign up sheet -name,
position, e-mail address. The number of interns is contingent on the number
of mentors. Goal is to impact the student body and university. Want leaders
who they feel are capable and competent.
Rooney- 46 are going to be the future leaders. Cultural festival was today
from 11-2, 5 groups came out. 60-65 people in total. Need to increase
marketing. Could not place festival in Mcmicken commons, next one might be
right by Nippert. Thanks to all who attended. Meeting on Monday with Sr.
Gravely. Some of their values are placing students needs first, working in
partnership with faculty, cultivating core values through rich learning
environment. Meeting on Friday, chaired by Dr. Livingston. Tribunal budgets,
please write down what you need- operating expenses. Food, supplies,
business cards, office space, etc. It is very important. Working to make
tribunals more operating expensive. Need communication among students.
Need power among themselves. Deadline before next senate meeting. On
Saturday, a walk, if you are interested, can all carpool with Smith and Rooney.
Check email.
Did you know UC freshmen (86%) put UC as first choice school.
Sr: What we want in theory for the operating expenses?
VP Rooney: Yes
REPORT OF THE INTERNAL HOLDOVER SENATOR
Visted CCM tribunal yesterday. First time. It’s a little different from the other
schools. Academics on different level. The potential employers don’t really
care about what student groups they are involved in. Doing pretty well
currently. Visiting arts and science and business next Monday. Two weeks for
an enactment bill, please have discussion today so we can make changes and
vote on it next week.
REPORT OF THE EXTERNAL HOLDOVER SENATOR
Rec- massages. Met about the student diversity. Phelps, currently in Africa,
be back on Monday. Director of one of the affairs, working on a womens
affair conference. Program to develop young women leaders. For those who
don’t know, Direhouse debate not likely to happen. Yield. Director of
community affairs. Director of alumni affairs is working on a UC alum speaker
series. Direhouse-Chabot debates, not in a good situation. Working on spring
banquet, mayor and next representative of the next district.
REPORT OF THE DIRECTOR OF FINANCE
Director Bell, not much going on this week. National coming out day didn’t
use all the money. 37 dollars for the bicentennial brainstorming. Brings
balance to about 39,000.
EXECUTIVE NOMINATIONS
Ryan- sargeant in marine corps, 2 tours in Iraq. UC student. Wishes to make
Veterans more noticeable on campus. Toys for tots, wounded veterans fund,
clothes for the less fortunate. Wants to set up a veterans cup in the spring,
have a ceremony specifically for the veterans. Want to financially suitable so
they don’t have to ask for money. More they can do to help themselves, more
they can help us.
COMMITTEE REPORTS
Sr. Linger: Two meetings yesterday, one big thing with committee - tailgating
on shortvine. Has fliers. Next one is Friday 4-8. Inflatable big screen,
cornhole, vendors. Sustainability month is going very well. Have been
reaching out to a lot of students, saw how many students took the
sustainability pledge, handed out water bottles. Draft of grill bill is going in
this week, hopefully good news.
Riley- bearcat meal breakthrough, giving students discounts from restaurants
around campus. Heard back from Arby’s, first one. Hopefully the first of
many.
Rooney: what marketing are you going to do?
Quinn: Arbys was wondering the same thing. They will get back to you when
they work things out.
Linger: Do not have to use bearcat card, just show bearcat card because not
all places have the proper bearcat credit card machines.
-Progress with the brochures, expect something next week. Outreach with the
monthly meetings, split half the cost of movie with other group. Anyone know
of groups interested in pairing, let them know. Work is coming along on the
student collaborative, thinking of paralleling with CAT. Timeline is to have
applications out around November, have meeting sometime in January.
Sr Linger: Will you send out the content so that it can be edited and seen?
Yes, of course.
Governmental Affairs: almost finalized the representation, working on a
couple niches. Thinking of ideas to get people to vote. Channel 9-Driehouse
and Chabot debating tonight. Last year of tuition tax credit, the city of
Cincinnati debt is 6 million. UC alliance is sponsoring a candlelight vigil at 9
p.m. tonight on mcmicken commons. GE Aviation is going to have 500 local
jobs. Driehouse said he would raise his own money. In 2 weeks, California is
going to have something on the ballot to legalize marijuana. Extra stimulation
money, is going to UC.
Academic issues- meeting with Co-op office. The blackboard app for apple
devices is not currently working, trying to solve problem.
BOARD REPORTS
UFB- saw 6 budgets, navigators, Alpha Phi Omega, students for ecological
design, orientation board-nutrition board, history club
Nightwalk safety- David Clark apologies for not attending. 100% uptown this
week, delta chi did not show up. Any questions, ask Clark or Rooney.
SAB- working on adding a new part of the registration process, add question.
What sets group apart and what set of programming? Trying to be more
proactive.
Sr Taylor: do you have a deadline for new student groups?
Rooney: If an old group is coming back, do they have to wait 10 weeks for
funds?
Once you are no longer a group- you have to become a new group again.
Sr. Clark: where are the applications?
Can get them off the student government website. Will put them in the
student government office.
TRIBUNAL REPORTS
CECH- vary brief meeting past Monday. Attendance low in meeting due to Bid
Day. Is going to split congregation into committees.
CCM- not much to report. The number of wi-fi is going to increase. Working
on getting stands in the practice rooms. No firecodes about chaining stands.
Going to be a little bit costly. Couple concerts- 8:00 tonight. Tomorrow at
8:00 as well. Atrium at noon tomorrow.
Sr Lopez: what if you bring a guest?
CCM- orchestra and musical- all UC students fee. Non UC students- 5 dollars.
Adults-10.
Allied Health Sciences- meeting tomorrow at 6 p.m. Election tomorrow. Hope
is to bring announcements from each group. First general body meeting, a lot
of support from faculty members who were really helpful. Finished by laws
and constitution.
Business- tribunal speaker did not show up at meeting, but showed up an
hour later at a different meeting. Wont be invited back to speak.
A and S- kicken with McMicken, an advisor blitz. Third week in Novemeber.
Trying to get first speaker, hopefully someone from the FBI.
DAAP- not very much to report. Wednesday the 27 th at 10pm, DAAPture the
flag. Pirates vs. Ninjas. Sign up sheets around DAAP.
East- Dean coming to meeting Monday.
COMMENTS FROM THE GALLERY
Dr. Downing mentioned that she hopes there will be good representation of
student government at the walk. Annual Student Life Open house. Normally
about 300 students that come in between 2 hour period. Between 11-1.
Representatives are encouraged to be in attendance. If you’re at a football
game, adhere to student conduct. Remind friends to have fun, but just go the
other way. Keep it in good fun. Spread the word.
OLD BUSINESS
There is no old business.
NEW BUSINESS
Student Appropriations Bill S.11-A-017
Reopened the poll. Will be ordering apparel next week. Need money. Polos will
cost around 19 dollars. 5 dollar off coupon from total order. Be more marketable
and visible on campus.
-Does not agree because students should not have to pay for clothing. Abuse of
power.
Quinn: does not see it as an abuse of power. Just something to help us out.
-Think that people are seeing it more as clothes then as a marketing tool.
Sr Gunther: goal is to serve student body. Not advertise student government.
-Principle, conflict of interest.
-Payne- students will not be contributing finically.
-Discretion line should be used for making copies, not advertising. It has nothing
to do with apparel.
-CCM tribunal is very opposed is spending money on student government.
Bill passes by 16-8-1.
Student Appropriations Bill S.11-A-018
May look familiar from last week, just added more money so they will deliver
thoroughly.
Student Enactment Bill S.11-E-007
Enactment bill criteria for UFB. Concerns can be found in article 8, section C.
details on application of disciplinary policy. Drafted after some specifics were
added. Don’t believe there are any more edits.
Rooney: Thinks they did a pretty good job putting this together. When they
voted on this criteria, they voted in the best interest of students.
Bill is tabled.
ANNOUNCEMENTS
Dr. Bell- King of Wings- Smith and Rooney entering. 25 dollars for a team of 3.
All proceeds go to Make-a-Wish-foundation. November 3 rd , come after
senate.
Linger- short vine tailgate Friday 4-8. Make a difference day- cincinnatusgreat way to get some hours.
-Comedy event by PAC.
-FYE meeting for all people interested in being a mentor- 4:45 tomorrow.
Sr Miller: Candlelight Vigil tonight.
-Quidditch team met in Stratford today. Join.
CCM- concert in 35 minutes.
