RETAIL SALES
In the retail setting, there are three applications for using the Avery DennisonTM
Swiftach® fastening system: price and brand ticketing, pairing and displaying
items. Each application has a choice of fasteners that can be used to meet these
needs.
1) Price and Brand Ticketing
This type of application generally requires a paddle style fastener and the
Standard or Fine Fabric product families are the most common choices. For hard
good price ticketing, the Avery Dennison Loop or Secur-a-tach fastener is
available.
Standard paddle fasteners are perfect for price ticketing because of the product's
extra large paddle size. This feature makes it difficult to re-thread the fasteners
through the price ticket, reducing the risk of ticket switching. Standard paddle
fasteners are available in general purpose strength for basic tagging and heavy
duty nylon for tougher applications that require greater tensile strength.
For high volume tagging, a unique paddle style fastener is available in the Avery
Dennison System 1000® product family. This product offers standard paddle
fasteners on a continuous roll of 1000, perfect for high volume tagging. It requires
the use of the System 1000 attaching tool.
Fine Fabric paddle fasteners are designed for delicate, tightly knit fabrics and
non-woven materials. Another option is the Loop style standard fastener, used
for many accessories applications.
2) Pairing
Retail items that are sold in pairs or sets (gloves, socks, shoes, kitchen and bath
sets etc.) typically require the use of Avery Dennison T-end fasteners. Hard good
items require the Avery Dennison Loop or Secur-a-tach style fasteners.
T-End fasteners are molded from heavy-duty nylon to provide a secure
attachment and provide a more finished appearance. T-End are also an excellent
alternative to metal staples which often damage garments.
Loop styles are used to tag belts, shoes and other accessory products.
3) Display
Some apparel accessories and gifts do not display easily. As a result, the hooktach fastener was developed to provide ticket attachment and hanging display.
Hook fasteners are ideal for hats, hosiery, stuffed toys and many other items
have have a unique shape. They are available in general purpose and heavy
duty strengths to fit your application.

Retail Tagging Approaches
There are two basic tagging environments common to the retail industry, and
each has unique solutions to provide optimum productivity.
High-Volume Retail Distribution Center Tagging:
When non-stop tagging is required, the System 1000 system is the tool for you.
With 1,000 fasteners per reel, the System 1000 allows for less time spent
reloading. This reduces the opportunity for jamming, which results increased
worker productivity. From apparel to produce to industrial packaging, with the
System 1000® II E you’ll experience maximized productivity, reduced waste and
longer tool life.
Bench mounted tagging systems are best if it's faster to bring the garment or item
to the tool, rather than using a hand tool. The Avery Dennison Industrial System
1000® bench mount tool allows for the greatest productivity. It is a complete
bench mounted system that uses 1,000 fasteners to a reel, for the least amount
of reloading. It also offers an adjustable stroke that permits the use of three
different length needles for the toughest pairing applications.
Moderate-Volume Store Level Retail Tagging
Typically in this application, workers tag less than 1,000 garment per day.
If you're using standard fasteners our Avery Dennison Mark III Pistol style tool,
the industry's premiere attaching tool. A scissor-style standard tool is also
available and is preferred for tagging hanging goods. Our Pistol Mark III accepts
50 or 100 per clip fasteners. Our scissor-style tool accepts the 50 per clip only.
For increased safety, always choose safety sealed replacement needles.
3
If you are using Fine Fabric style fasteners, the tool choices are the Fine Fabric
Plus Pistol Tool, or Fine Fabric scissor-style tool. As with the standard tools, the
Fine Fabric Pistol accepts both 50 and 100 per clip Fine Fabric fasteners, while
the scissor-style only accepts 50 per clip. Fine Fabric safety sealed replacement
needles are also available for increased worker safety.

APPAREL MANUFACTURING
There are three primary applications in the apparel manufacturing market that
utilize Avery DennisonTM Swiftach® fasteners: price and/or brand ticketing,
product pairing and product display.
The material type is critical when selecting which fastener family to use for your
application.
Delicate Fabrics (silk, satin, nylon, elastic, micro fibers lycra, rayon, polyester)
commonly utilize the Fine Fabric family attaching system.
Conventional Fabrics (cotton, cotton twill, denim, corduroy, fur, wool )
commonly utilize the Standard family attaching systems.
Industrial Fabrics (multiple layer denim, leather, canvas ) commonly utilize the
Super Heavy Duty family attaching system.
Common Apparel Solutions
If you're using Standard or Fine Fabric style fasteners, our Industrial Long Needle
tools, available in Standard or Fine Fabric versions, can be adjusted to a
standard stroke to accommodate any application. Both versions accept 100 per
clip style fasteners for premium productivity.
Also available are the Avery DennisonTM Swiftach Power Units (SPUs). With
these units, you’ll realize increased productivity, especially when it is faster to
bring the garment or item to the tool instead of using a hand tool. SPUs are
available in pre-configured units, but are also available custom built to offer you
greater efficiency and profitability. All SPUs are powered by air compression and
are available for both general purpose and Fine Fabric applications.

PACKAGING
There are three primary packaging applications: Pairing, Securing and Product
Display. For packaging applications, the T-end, Loop, Hook, Nylon paddle, and
Secur-a-tach style fasteners are most commonly used.
T-End Fasteners
The T-end, made from heavy-duty nylon, is the most widely used fastener in
packaging applications. It provides a strong, secure attachment with a finished
"look" with its two-sided T-end. Many applications that use metal staples in
packaging have switched to the use of T-end fasteners because of the reduced
risk of garment damage, especially in fine woven materials which can easily snag
or tear fiber's when metal staples are used.
Typical Packaging applications that use t-end fasteners:
o
o
o
o
Apparel and Soft Goods packaging: (hosiery, domestic multi-pack
sets)
Toy Packaging (securing dolls and other soft goods in chipboard
packaging)
Sporting Goods (securing and pairing of multi-components)
Furniture (securing trim components)
Loop Fasteners
The Loop style fasteners have several packaging applications. Because Loop
fasteners are fired twice, they can be used to loosely pair items together and to
"hang" soft goods, increasing product visibility on display. The most frequent
packaging application involving Loop fasteners is to secure products in place,
such as in chipboard "window" boxes. Because the Loop is attached by a hand
tool, time spent manually fastening products in packaging is eliminated.
6
Hook Fasteners
Hook style fasteners are available in 1 ½" (38mm), 2" (51mm) and 2 ¾” (70mm)
lengths. These fasteners provide not only a means of attaching a tag, but also a
hanger for display items. Hosiery and head wear items are ideal for this type of
fastener. Hook fasteners are available in general purpose and heavy duty
strengths.
Secur-a-tach fasteners
Avery Dennison Secur-a-tach fasteners are the solution for hard goods
packaging. Many accessory components are attached with these fasteners,
available in 3" (76mm), 5" (127mm), and 9" (229mm) lengths.

DRY CLEANING
One of the "best kept secrets" of successful dry cleaning operations is the use of
Avery DennisonTM Swiftach® Fine Fabric fasteners to attach customer control
tags in place of safety pins, straight pins and metal staples.
The Avery DennisonTM Swiftach system is easier and faster to use than metal
pins, costs less, and is preferred by consumers. The use of metal pins and
staples has always been associated with a potential risk for garment damage and
other consumer safety issues.
The Dry Cleaning Kit System: Fine Fabric Plus Pistol Tool, 100 per clip Fine
Fabric dry cleaning fasteners and Fine Fabric replacement needles.
Our special dry cleaning fasteners are designed specifically for this application.
Available in 50 and 100 per clip styles, they are molded from a special nylon
material that is super strong, reducing the risk of lost customer ID tickets. They
are temperature resistant (safe for steam presses) and have a moisture "
blocking" additive to improve performance in high steam environments. All of
these features help to reduce tool jamming that conventional tagging fasteners
do not afford. Our dry cleaning fasteners are white in color in order to have high
visibility for easier removal.
High volume laundry locations are utilizing the Pneumatic Industrial Fine Fabric
Bench Mount Tool. For more information on power attaching options in this
market, go to our Sales Offices page and contact a Sales Specialist to discuss
what system is right for you.

MANUFACTURING/PROCESS CONTROL
Avery DennisonTM Swiftach® fastening systems are frequently used in many
manufacturing and processing applications, including raw material and
component parts identification, quality control (inspection/rejection) production
tracking , WIP, material flow, assembly directions, shipping directions, and
inventory control.
The Swiftach system is preferred over metal fasteners because it is quick and
easy to use and plastic fasteners are a much safer alternative to metal. An
additional benefit to using plastic fasteners is the increased durability plastic
affords in all types of environments and conditions.
In manufacturing applications, there are three basic types of fasteners that are
used: Standard and Super Heavy-Duty T-ends, Loop, and Buttoneer styles.
T-End fasteners are the preferred choice for most applications and are available
in many lengths (up to 9" or 225mm) to handle the most demanding
requirements. Tufted materials, fabric flaw marking and sub-assemblies are a
few of the applications that use T-end style fasteners. Loop style fasteners are
substituted when working with hard goods. Buttoneer fasteners are ideal for
spacing applications.
Attaching component ID information to a computer circuit board is a typical
fastening application where Avery DennisonTM Swiftach® T-end fasteners save
time and money over conventional methods.
Any processing application that currently is using glue, thread, tape or metal
fasteners can benefit from our fast and safe attaching alternatives.

ARTS & CRAFTS
The Arts & Crafts/Hobby industry has recognized the time saving features of the
Avery DennisonTM Swiftach® attaching method. The primary applications for
fastening in this market are tacking/basting and securing.
A sampling of the current Swiftach fastener applications includes quilting,
draperies, furniture upholstery, pillow slipcovers and pillow cushions.
A quilter's dream... that's what the industry refers to the use of our 1/4" (7mm)
Fine Fabric fasteners in place of sewing in "tacking " operations. All that is
required is a Fine Fabric tool (pistol or scissor-style), 1/4" (7mm) Fine Fabric
fasteners and Fine Fabric replacement needles.
The quilting process requires that 3 layers of material be held in place
temporarily, before the final design sewing takes place. In the past, the only
option was to hand sew a grid pattern across the quilt, and then carefully remove
the stitches upon completion. The discovery by many crafts people of the fine
fabric attaching method has created a great deal of excitement in the industry.
The 1/4" T-ends can be applied to an entire quilt quickly and easily. Many quilters
claim this reduces process time by more than half. Even fastener removal is a
time saver, because the 1/4" T-end fasteners are easier to see and remove than
thread.
Many other sewing applications can benefit from this process: positioning piping,
attaching appliqués to a wall quilt, assembly and storage of quilt triangles. The
possibilities are endless. Any process that needs to be fastened, and doesn't
require skilled sewing, can be handled by the Avery Dennisontm Swiftach®
attaching method.

NURSERY & HORTICULTURE
Attaching price, product and care identification to potted plants in nursery and
retail applications has always been a challenge... until the introduction of the
Avery DennisonTM Swiftach® Super Heavy Duty tagging system.
Conventional methods used to mark and tag information to potted plants have
always fallen short. Labels do not hold up well in extreme environmental
conditions. String tags and wires can be tampered with and allow for "ticket
switching." Plastic care markers inserted in soil can fall out.
The solution: a strong, tough, plastic fasteners and application tool that can
measure up to high requirements. Super Heavy Duty fasteners are made of the
strongest grade 6/6 nylon available, have tensile strength up to 20 lbs! Our
patented shape T-Bar helps the fastener filament fold over easily for product
insertion.
Super heavy duty fasteners can be applied by using the Mark III pistol tool. This
tool was designed to include flush ports for easy cleaning and a needle designed
for Super Heavy Duty fasteners. The Super Heavy Duty fasteners are available
in T-end or loop styles. For more information, visit our Super Heavy Duty Product
Family page.
