_________________________________________________________________________March 2008 _ A WORD FROM OUR PRESIDENT Class Officers President Jeff Pearce 1184 W. Crestwood Dr Memphis, TN 38119 H. 901-682-2246 W. 901-682-5681 jeff_pearce@bellsouth.net Hello Jamie and everyone, I'm not sure what you are doing with this newsletter, but I'm glad you are doing it. It's very hard for some of us to keep up with friends and classmates in an era where it should be very easy (internet etc). We are still in Memphis, TN and have been since 1989. I have 4 kids, and as most of you know they were adopted abroad. They pretty much rule my pathetic little life!!!! Between school events, soccer, basketball, and other sports of the month, we are always on the go. Most of you can relate. I really miss everyone from Ole WA and wish I could see ya'll on a regular basis, but hopefully everyone will send in some pics of themselves and we can all have a good laugh at what time and gravity have done to us!!!! Here are my selections for my family and Jamie can do with them as she wishes. Vice-President Patty Kirk Lancaster Take care and peace to all, P. O. Jeff Pearce - Here are some pictures from our big trip back to the "Mother Lands" this summer. We spent a month in China and India and had a great time. Janet Brister Dupont - ..almost 46 and have finally gotten my life somewhat together! have a great job in greenwood, teaching at the vocational and technical center. i love it! i only teach 4 classes and do public relations the rest of the day. my boys are 11 and almost 15....help!!!! any advice?!?!?!?!?! they are really good boys, considering they have been without a father figure since my divorce.. i have to add this however.....i have a wonderful man in my life that i have been with for almost a year and a half....that's really good for me! he's is the ONE!!!!! no marriage for at least 4 years....we don't want to "mix" kids. Sissy Ellis Cole - i cant wait (for the newsletter)! you know all my info. married to tim cole. 2 wonderful kids evan is 13 and olivia is 11. thanks for doing this. love sissy Steve Brown – His house was on E-bay!!! Well, not really his house but a post card with a picture of it. Steve said….. ”When we first bought the house I did a little research and JT Lay was the original owner of the house. His father-in-law was Colonel Moore. I found the original deeds at the courthouse for my house and for the house that is now Lee Funeral Home. They are both dated 1874 with a price of $100 each. The Lee Funeral Home house was owned by a Dr. Turner. Col. Moore was also his father-in-law. The wives/sisters were Ella Moore Lay & Laura Moore Turner. The only child of the Lays that I could find is a son named Mortie Lay and he died at a military school when he was 19. I got that information off of his tombstone. When Ella Lay died, she left the house to her nephew Osborne Moore who either sold it or gave it to the Presbyterian Church. here is a historic real photo postcard RPPC of the beautiful "LAY HOME WINONA, MISS." - mailed from Eupora to VA in 1914 - small tear at bottom does not detract from this great Mississippi image! “We believe Mortie Lay still lives in the house. Just about everybody who has lived there believes a ghost is in the house. When we first moved in there were all kinds of strange sounds and happenings. Sometimes there would be loud slams and the sounds of footsteps going up the stairs. We could never find what made the noises. Sometimes it got really loud when I was getting onto the kids. Someone else has speculated that the ghost was a child because it seemed playful. When we found Mortie Lay’s grave and saw that he died at the age of 19, we decided he was the ghost. We started talking to him and using his name. After that, the strange noises almost quit. I never believed in ghosts before living there but now I really wonder if there is such a thing. Mortie has been the star of many spend the night parties with lots of screaming girls because of a few stories I’ve made up. It’s amazing how many kids know the name of Mortie Lay.” 2 What our children are doing…. Carlin Rinehart Carlin is the son of Charlotte Bowie Rinehart. These are pics of Carlin in a recent surfing contest in Panama. He didn’t place in this event because he broke his boards. He did place first in another competition the following weekend. Evan Cartledge Evan is the son of Marshall (WA ’77) and Rebecca Whatley Cartledge. He is a senior at Jackson Academy and has just ended his high school basketball career with an outstanding season. The Raiders made it to the quarter finals of the MPSA overall basketball tournament. Evan was honored with a position on the AA-AAA All Star Basketball team. 3 More of what our children are doing…. Kenneth Niemeyer Kenneth is the 9 year old son of Chuck and Jamie Kidd Niemeyer. He has been busy this year with U10 soccer, boy scouts and the school production of The Music Man. Cool Quotes and Funny Stuff to fill Space…. "The best way to find your self is in the service of others." – Ghandi "I read somewhere that 77 per cent of all the mentally ill live in poverty. Actually, I'm more intrigued by the 23 percent who are apparently doing quite well for themselves." - Jerry Garcia - Grateful Dead “My wife told me the car wasn't running well because there was water in the carburetor. I asked where the car was; she told me "In the lake." - Red Skelton “My wife told me the car wasn't running well because there was water in the carburetor. I asked where the car was; she told me "In he lake." Red Skelton “If we couldn’t laugh, we would all go insane.” Jimmy Buffett “Life moves pretty fast. If you don’t stop and look around once in a while, you could miss it.” Ferris Bueller “Never be afraid to trust an unknown future to a known God.” Carrie Ten Boom “I am oftentimes driven to my knees by the overwhelming conviction that I have nowhere else to go!"--Abraham Lincoln 4 Where we are…. I hope everyone enjoys the first issue of our class newsletter. I have no plans to do this on a regular basis…frequency and length of the letters will depend on what you send me. I welcome all comments and suggestions. I’m still new to the process of working with photos so be patient with me, please. This first letter will be snail-mailed to everyone. Obviously, due to cost, I’d prefer to e-mail it. If you didn’t get this by e-mail, please get your current e-mail address to me. The last time I made an effort to find everyone was in 2003 when we had our last reunion. Please check your info and let me know of any changes. I’ll publish updates in every issue so we can stay in touch. In 2003, Gail Trussell and Jill Eskridge asked that their contact information not be published. Unfortunately I didn’t keep what little information I had. If anyone still keeps in touch with them, please forward a copy of this letter. If they want to be added to the newsletter mail list, they just need to contact me and I’ll put them on while still maintaining their privacy. Lastly…I still can’t find Richard Dobbs. It’s almost become a mission. If any of you can help with that, I sure would appreciate it. Jamie - Philippians 1:3 6
