Some Questions for The Gospel of Mark Chapter 1: 1. 1:1. The first line is? The beginning of the gospel of Jesus Christ (the Son of God). 2. 1-13. The 1st Person to appear is? Where? Doing what? John the Baptist. Baptizing and preaching repentance (preparing the way). In the desert, near Jordan River. 1st thing that happens to Jesus? He is baptized by John. What does the Voice say? You are my beloved Son; with you I am well pleased." What happens to Jesus immediately after that? Where? He is driven out into the desert by the Spirit, where he is tempted. 3. 14-15. Jesus’ 1st words are? "This is the time of fulfillment. The kingdom of God is at hand. Repent, and believe in the gospel." 4. 16-20. The 1st thing that happens after that? He calls disciples. 5. 21-end. What follows are a series of what(s)? Miracles. Chapter 2: 6. 2:5-7, what is said about him? That he is blaspheming 7. 15-17. Who is he eating with? Tax collectors and sinners (the “unclean”) Chapter 3: 8. 3:6 What is being planned? They want to put him to death 9. 13-19. What is going on here? Jesus appoints 12 (apostles) Chpater 8: 10. 27-30. Find the Christological question, and who answers it, and how it is answered. “But who do you say that I am?" Peter said to him in reply, "You are the Messiah." 11. 33. What does Jesus say to Peter? Why? "Get behind me, Satan. You are thinking not as God does, but as human beings do." Jesus had predicted that the messiah must suffer and Peter “rebuked” Jesus for doing so. 12. 34-38. What are the conditions of discipleship? To take up your cross and follow Jesus. The one who tries to save his life will lose it; the one who loses her life for the sake of the gospel will save it. Chapter 9 13. 9: 2-8. What happens? What does the Voice say? The Transfiguration (dazzling light; Moses and Elijah are there). The voice says, "This is my beloved Son. Listen to him." Chapter 10 13. 46-52. What does Bartimaeus call Jesus? Son of David. Can Bartimaeus see? No, and Yes. He is blind. But he ‘sees’ who Jesus is (Son of David) where others don’t. Then he is healed and can see normally. Chapter 11 14. 11:1-11. How does Jesus enter Jerusalem? A kind of parade, on a colt. What do the crowds sing about him? "Hosanna! Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord! Blessed is the kingdom of our father David that is to come! Hosanna in the highest!" 15. 15-18. What does Jesus do? Drives money changers from the Temple. What did the chief priests and the scribes want to do to him? Have him put to death Chapter 12 16. 28-33. What is the Greatest Commandment? Love God and your neighbor as yourself. 17. 41-44. How much did the Widow contribute? All she had (2 small coins). Her gift was the greatest then. Chapter 14 18. 14:1-2. What’s the Plan? To put Jesus to death. 19. 3-9. What happens to Jesus? He is anointed with oil by a woman. The disciples were upset. 20. 22-25. What happens with bread and wine? While they were eating, he took bread, said the blessing, broke it, and gave it to them, and said, "Take it; this is my body." Then he took a cup, gave thanks, and gave it to them, and they all drank from it. He said to them, "This is my blood of the covenant, which will be shed 8 for many. 21. 32-52. Where do they go after the meal? To the Garden. What happens to Jesus there? Jesus prays that the cup might pass from him, but that God’s will be done. 22. 60-65. Jesus is asked a question. What is his answer? “Are you the Messiah, the son of the Blessed One?" I am; and 'you will see the Son of Man seated at the right hand of the Power and coming with the clouds of heaven.'" Then what happens? He is convicted of blasphemy. Chapter 15 23. 15:1-5. What question does Pilate ask Jesus? "Are you the king of the Jews?" 24. 6-15. Pilate will either release Jesus or Barabbas. Who gets released? Barabbas. 25. 16-20. Do the soldiers call Jesus a King? How? They clothed him in purple and, weaving a crown of thorns, placed it on him. They began to salute him with, "Hail, King of the Jews!" and kept striking his head with a reed and spitting upon him. They knelt before him in homage. 26. 26. What does it say at the top of the Cross? "The King of the Jews." 27. 33-41. What happened at noon? Darkness came over the land. At 3:00? Jesus cried out in a loud voice, "Eloi, Eloi, lema sabachthani?" 14 which is translated, "My God, my God, why have you forsaken me?" In v. 37? Jesus gave a loud cry and breathed his last. In v. 38? The veil of the sanctuary was torn in two from top to bottom. What did the Centurion say in v. 39? "Truly this man was the Son of God!" Who else was at the Cross in the end? “[some] women looking on from a distance. Among them were Mary Magdalene, Mary the mother of the younger James and of Joses, and Salome…There were also many other women who had come up with him to Jerusalem. 28. 42-49. What did they do with the body? They took it down from the cross; wrapped it in linen and placed it in a hewn rock (tomb). Chapter 16 29. Ch. 16:1-8. Who went to the tomb? Mary Magdalene, Mary, the mother of James, and Salome. Who was in the tomb? a young man sitting on the right side, clothed in a white robe. What did that person say? Do not be amazed! You seek Jesus of Nazareth, the crucified. He has been raised; he is not here… But go and tell his disciples and Peter, 'He is going before you to Galilee; there you will see him, as he told you.'" How were the women feeling in v. 8? They…fled from the tomb, seized with trembling and bewilderment. They said nothing to anyone, for they were afraid.
