Today’s economy offers no end of entrepreneurial
opportunity based on consumer needs. From food to
fashion, entertainment to extreme sports, there is an
endless list of businesses devoted to fulfilling real and
imagined needs. And the power of mass media has
ensured that the actual difference between “real” and
“imagined” needs is a constantly moving target.
Among the needs that most would concede to be
fundamental are those of wholesome nutrition, shelter,
and healthcare. Perhaps less obvious, however, is the
need for knowledge – a commodity that has proved as
important an arbiter of success and personal fulfillment
as the satisfaction of any physical need.

The historic recognition of this need, and the creation of
a system of public education in response to it, is in no
small part responsible for the material achievements of
the United States. And while it is primarily the
responsibility of schools to impart basic skills that match
the realities of the workplace our children will enter as
adults, there is a more basic function that schools and
parents perform: teaching our children to become
successful learners. Helping schools and parents
achieve this goal is a 20 year mission of Tutoring Club.
When a child enrolls in Tutoring Club.
Students are given a series of diagnostic exams to
determine any areas of weakness in particular skill
areas. The curriculum is then tailored to these problem
areas, and they are honed until a basic level of retention
is demonstrated. “We hire people who are credentialed
teachers or who have advanced academic degrees. We
don’t use computers to teach kids, but to compile the
diagnostic information and develop appropriate lesson
plans. “We start from the lowest skill level in an
academic area then progress to the next level, and the
number of lessons is based on pre- and post-test
diagnostics,” notes Chad Schwartz, tutoring industry
expert and founder of Tutoring Club.

Tutoring Club’s success underscored by
Entrepreneur Magazine.
In its annual ranking of U.S. franchise businesses,
Entrepreneur named Tutoring Club among the nation’s
Franchise 500 for the last five years, including America’s
Top Global Franchises and Fastest-Growing Franchises.
According to Chad Schwartz, “the success of our
organization is based on two things: the dedication of
each of our franchisees to our goal of creating
successful learners, and the quality of the programs
we’ve created to achieve that goal.”
Tutoring Club was founded in 1991, and is now
celebrating 20 years of achievement.
After nearly a decade of honing the organization’s
learning programs, Tutoring Club launched a franchise
expansion phase that has so far resulted in the creation
of nearly 150 Clubs throughout the country and abroad.

A significant factor in the success of Tutoring Club, and
a harbinger of its continued growth, is the changing
attitude of parents towards tutoring. For years, tutoring
suffered the perception of being only for “slow” children,
or those who struggled in a particular academic area.
Thanks to organizations like Tutoring Club, however,
that perception is rapidly changing – and there is now an
explosion in the enrollment of children in tutoring
programs.
Observes Schwartz, “many of the students at our
centers are already at or above grade level – we are
helping them hone their learning skills in the same way
that a child would go to a basketball or soccer camp to
improve his or her playing ability.”
