Notes from Group work at the Community of Practice Meeting 7th August Scarborough Discussion around CTLD’s from the Group work discussions Common themes from the feedback that considered how nurse’s time is currently spent In the main, only about a third of time within the working week is spent on face to face contact (there were a few people with higher and low figures due to specific job – e.g. nurse managers spent less than 30%) Around a third of time was spent on ‘admin’ which included IT, note writing, phone calls, meetings etc Around a third was spent travelling – in rural areas this was a distance issue but in towns this was a problem with traffic congestion Some roles were ‘outliers’ in relation to other community nurses e.g. in Bradford the majority of one persons role was to deal with ‘crisis management’. Significant amount of time is still spent on care management but this varies across localities ‘Not enough time’ for issues such as research, reading, professional development etc General issues included Problems with IT – some areas the LD service was behind in terms of implementation Safeguarding issues are taking up more and more time Discussion around nurses working in ‘bed based’ services from the group work discussions Similar issues to CTLD based nurses about large percentage of time spent on ‘admin’ ‘Little’ face to face contact for qualified staff Significant amount of time spent on MDT co-ordination Lots of time spent on ‘manpower management’ including rota’s etc Significant theme around requirement to do audits – clinical and non-clinical and time implications Training also a key theme Student nurses More contact with client and families More time for personal development No time spent with mainstream services Significant admin and meetings to attend e.g. MDT Pictures of PIE charts created by groups will be available on the website www.debramooreassociates.com DM 16.8.09
