This master should be used only for specific Port of Portland projects. Check with the Port Project Manager or Project Engineer to determine applicability of this section.
Usage notes highlight a few specific editing choices, however the entire section should be evaluated and edited to fit specific project needs.
Carpet manufacturers are not exempt until the first PDX terminal carpet project is complete. For following PDX terminal carpet projects, the carpet will be sole-sourced from the manufacturer used on the first PDX terminal carpet project. For projects using the exempted carpet manufacturer, review all references and preferred characteristics.

PART 3 - EXECUTION
3.1
EXAMINATION
A.
Examine substrates, areas, and conditions with installer present for compliance with requirements for maximum moisture content, alkalinity range, installation tolerances, and other conditions affecting carpet performance. Examine carpet for type, color, pattern, and potential defects.
B.
Concrete Subfloors: Verify that concrete slabs comply with ASTM F710 and the following:
1.
Slab substrates are dry and free of curing compounds, sealers, hardeners, and other materials that may interfere with adhesive bond. Determine adhesion and dryness characteristics by performing bond and moisture tests according to the requirements of this specification section and as recommended by the carpet manufacturer.
2.
Subfloors shall be free of cracks, ridges, depressions, scale, and foreign deposits.
3.
On-grade or below grade subfloors shall be prepared with a moisture vapor barrier and comply with ASTM E1745.
C.
Notify the Port in writing that substrate and site conditions either meet requirements as specified in this section and stated in the referenced specifications or require corrections.
1.
If corrections are necessary, inspect the corrected conditions and notify the Port of any additional corrections required to achieve a satisfactory substrate for installation of the carpet.
D.
Proceed with installation only after unsatisfactory conditions have been corrected, and corrected conditions have been accepted by the Port.
3.2
PREPARATION
A.
Comply with CRI Carpet Installation Standard and with carpet manufacturer’s written installation instructions for preparing substrates.
B.
Use trowelable leveling and patching compounds, according to manufacturer’s written instructions, to fill cracks, holes, depressions, and protrusions in substrates. Fill or level cracks, holes and depressions 1/8 inch wide or wider, and protrusions more than 1/4 inch, unless manufacturer has more stringent requirements.
C.
Use moisture vapor retarder at on-grade and below grade concrete subfloors and where required by manufacturer’s written instructions.
D.
Remove coatings, including curing compounds, and other substances that are incompatible with adhesives and that contain soap, wax, oil, or silicone, without using solvents. Use mechanical methods recommended in writing by carpet manufacturer.
E.
Broom and vacuum clean substrates immediately before installing carpet.
